Michael Caine: bring back national service

11 November 2009 4:43 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The 76-year-old actor and Korean war veteran said it would be great way to give young people 'a sense of belonging rather than a sense of violence'

He plays a retired Royal Marine who dispenses vigilante-style justice to the young thugs who killed his friend in new movie Harry Brown. Last night, at the film's European premiere in London, Michael Caine called for the return of national service to give today's youths a "sense of belonging rather than a sense of violence".

Caine, 76, who served in the Korean war and did two years of national service, said he considered himself "anti-war", but felt a stint in the armed forces would be beneficial for today's youngsters.

"There should be a great plan to re-educate these youngsters," he said. "It's such a waste – they all feel society has let them down.

"I'm just saying put them in the army for six months. »

Brendan Gleeson, who plays Alastor .Mad Eye' Moody in Harry Potter, and Hotel Rwanda star Don Cheadle will team up to take on an international drug smuggling operation in director John Michael McDonagh's pic, The Guard.

Gleeson is set to play Seargeant Gerry Boyle, an unorthodox Irish policeman who joins up with unrelenting FBI Agent Wendell Everett, played by Cheadle. Boyle's confrontational personality along with a subversive sense of humour, a dying mother, and a penchant for prostitutes leaves him with little interest in the global cocaine smuggling operation that brings Everett to his door.

The film, which also stars Mark Strong, Liam Cunningham, Fionnula Flanagan, David Wilmot, Rory Keenan, Pat Shortt and Katarina Cas, has just started principal photography in the West of Ireland.

Brendan Gleeson and Don Cheadle Will Star in The Guard

29 October 2009 5:09 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Brendan Gleeson (Harry Potter series) stars as an unorthodox Irish policeman who joins forces with a straitlaced FBI agent, played by Don Cheadle (upcoming Iron Man 2), to take on an international drug-smuggling gang in John Michael McDonagh's The Guard, which has just started principal photography in the West of Ireland.

Sergeant Gerry Boyle is a small-town cop with a confrontational personality, a subversive sense of humor, a dying mother, a fondness for prostitutes, and absolutely no interest whatsoever in the international cocaine-smuggling ring that has brought FBI agent Wendell Everett to his door.

However, despite the fact that Boyle seems more interested in mocking and undermining Everett than in actively working to solve the case, he finds that circumstances keep pulling him back into the thick of it. First his tiresomely enthusiastic new partner McBride disappears, then his favourite hooker attempts to blackmail him into turning a blind eye, »

Blood: The Last Vampire - Blu-ray Review

The anime is brought to life. However, the results are good but not as good as the anime that spawned it. It.s sad when a movie has so much potential but some terrible moves bring the whole thing down a bit. In 1970, Saya (Gianna Jun) is the new girl at a school on Yokota air force base. Appearances can be deceiving since Saya is a 400-year-old vampire. She can trace her origins back to feudal Japan where she was raised by Kato (Yasuaki Kurata). In modern times, she works for an ancient, secret organization called the Council that hunts demons and her handlers are Michael (Liam Cunningham) and Luke (J.J. Feild). She.s on assignment at the »

Scream Fest 09: Review of The Tournament

Year: 2009

Directors: Scott Mann

Writers: Jonathan Frank / Nick Rowntree / Gary Young

Review by: Hal MacDermot

Rating: 7.4 out of 10

Once every seven years, thirty of the world’s most deadly assassins gather together and fight for the grand prize of ten million dollars – there can be only one winner, only one survivor.

Normally this genre of Battle Royale-esque movie is set on an exotic island, or a mystic m’larkey temple, and here’s why I knew I was in for something different right from the start, The Tournament is set in no-m’larkey-at-all working class Middleborough, in the rainy North of England. Scott Mann’s action packed debut feature stars Robert Carlyle as a drunken priest mistaken for a hitman, and the beautiful Kelly Hu as a real hit woman. For a $12 million budget, you get a good bang for your buck. There are a »

Neil Marshall's "Centurion" Unveils Two New Photos

Two brand new photos from "Centurion" have been uncovered by Empire. While one of the images displays a battle scene, the other one presents a better look at leading man Michael Fassbender as he takes on his character Quintus Dias. Actor Liam Cunningham is spotted standing in the background, behind Fassbender. Accompanying the photo, the site includes Fassbender's commentary on the movie. "There's certainly a lot of head-chopping," he said. "I guess you can always make modern-day parallels, to the occupation of Iraq. But it's the idea of someone who believes in an ethos, becomes disillusioned and comes to his own sort of beliefs. So there are parallels, and it's interesting when you take it out of our timeframe and stick it back 2,000 years." "Centurion" is an action thriller set... »

Two New Images from Centurion

6 October 2009 9:27 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Is it me or does Empire get all the exclusives? I’m just jealous!

Anyway, yesterday they posted two new images from Centurion.

The movie speculates on the fate of Rome’s reputedly ‘lost’ Ninth Legion*, who in this take are north of Hadrian’s Wall, engaged in a bloody battle and facing a bit of trouble getting out of hostile Pict country. Our hero is Fassbender’s Quintus, seen in the second of these pictures with Liam Cunningham (who of course starred opposite him in the harrowing ‘Hunger’).

Centurion is coming out Summer 2010. Click the images below to enlarge.

In “The Tournament”, Robert Carlyle plays a small-town priest who gets unwittingly dragged into a bloody tournament taking place covertly in his town.
