“There is a season for the gentle breezes. There is a season for the blustery winds. There is a season for the rains to drench. There is a season for all the seasons,” says Pi’ilani (Lindsay Marie Anuhea Watson) as we swoop in over the island of Kauai at the start of David L Cunningham’s historical epic. It’s an immediate reference point for the indigenous Hawaiian culture in which we will be immersed for most of the running time, and it’s a statement which we know she will return to.
Between 1886 and 1969, some 8,000 Hawaiian natives infected with leprosy were separated from their families and quarantined on the remote Kalaupapa peninsula, on the island of Molokai. Some remain to this day, though as leprosy is now treatable with antibiotics, they are there voluntarily. That was not the case for previous residents. The quarantine law was passed just after the.

Exclusive: Jason Scott Lee (Mulan) is set as a lead opposite Peyton Elizabeth Lee and Kathleen Rose Perkins in Disney+’s upcoming comedy series Doogie Kameāloha, M.D.
Written by Kourtney Kang and set in present-day Hawaii, Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. reimagines the Neil Patrick Harris-starring Doogie Howser M.D. as a half-hour medical dramedy with a female lead. It follows Lahela “Doogie” Kameāloha (Peyton Elizabeth Lee), a 16-year-old mixed-race girl who juggles a budding medical career and life as a teenager. Guiding Lahela — and also complicating things — is her family, including her spitfire Irish mother Dr. Clara Hannon (Perkins), who’s also Chief of Staff at the hospital and Lahela’s supervisor, and her Hawaiian “Local Boy” father (Jason Scott Lee) who struggles to accept that his daughter is no longer his little girl.

It’s difficult to offer a detailed synopsis of “Running for Grace” without making it sound like something adapted from a young adult novel of recent vintage. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, you understand, but this pleasantly well-crafted period drama actually plays more like a throwback to youth-skewing entertainment of an earlier era. Imagine a Troy Donahue-Sandra Dee teen romance of the early ‘60s with an inoffensive undercurrent of social consciousness, and you’ll have a good idea of what to expect from director David L. Cunningham’s thoroughly predictable but lightly enjoyable tale of love and prejudice in 1920s Hawaii.
During this period in the Kona Coffee Belt, the lines between Japanese immigrant laborers and members of the mostly-white power structure are rigidly maintained. Jo (played as a child by Cole Takiue), an orphan of mixed-race lineage, finds himself ostracized by both groups until...

"I saw the way you were looking at her..." Blue Fox Entertainment has debuted an official trailer for the indie romantic drama Running for Grace, the latest film from David L. Cunningham. Set on Hawaii in the 1920s, the film tells the story of a young mixed-race boy "who transcends the boundaries of race and class in pursuit of a forbidden love". It's a "timeless tale that takes place against the backdrop of the segregated coffee fields in 1920's Hawaii". The film has previously gone under the title Jo, the Medicine Runner but is now being released as Running for Grace. Ryan Potter stars as Jo, and Olivia Ritchie plays his love interest Grace; the rest of the cast includes Matt Dillon, Jim Caviezel, Juliet Mills, and Nick Boraine. This looks charming, but not particularly good unfortunately. Here's the first official trailer for David L. Cunningham's Running for Grace, direct...

Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, Dream House This past weekend (Sept. 30-Oct. 2), Dolphin Tale grossed slightly less than estimated according to North American box-office actuals found at Box Office Mojo. Directed by Charles Martin Smith, and featuring Harry Connick Jr, Ashley Judd, Nathan Gamble, Austin Stowell, and Morgan Freeman, Dolphin Tale pulled in $13.91 million, or about $300,000 less than originally estimated. At no. 2, Bennett Miller's Moneyball collected $12.03 million, or about $500,000 less than estimated. Brad Pitt stars, along with Jonah Hill, Robin Wright, and Chris Pratt. At no. 3, The Lion King 3D added $10.61m, also below estimates but more than enough for it to remain well ahead of both Mike Nichols' The Graduate and Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park on Box Office Mojo's inflation-adjusted chart of all-time box-office champs. Originally released in 1994, The Lion King features songs by Elton John and Tim Rice, and the voices of Matthew Broderick, James Earl Jones,...

Dream House's average was a highly disappointing $3,085 per theater. That's Daniel Craig's second box-office flop this year, following the highly disappointing performance of Jon Favreau's Cowboys & Aliens, Craig's highly expensive summer pairing with Harrison Ford. Craig, in fact, hasn't been very box-office friendly when not in Bond mode. Prior to his three-year hiatus from films, Defiance, The Invasion, Flashbacks of a Fool, and The Golden Compass were all domestic financial misfires,...

John Fusco, the writer behind Hidalgo and The Forbidden Kingdom, has signed on to adapt Cliff Graham's book Day of War for the screen, a Biblical-ish epic about the young King David. Think 300 with more slingshots. The book's the first of a series called "Lion of War" that Graham, a Us military veteran, is planning. The story follows a warrior called Benaiah who joins a band of mercenaries led by the young David, still a warlord rather than a King, and leading a motley crew who could turn on one another at any moment. The film's set to be directed by David L. Cunningham, who - god help us - brought us The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising, a pretty appalling adaptation of a great book. Let's hope he doesn't make the hero a Yank this time around, and that it ends up rather better.

Beloved Pictures has secured the film rights to C.S. Lewis' "The Great Divorce." This is from the bestselling author who gave us "The Chronicles of Narnia" series.
The first two books under the "Narnia" banner, "The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe," and "Prince Caspian"), were translated brilliantly on the big screen by Disney and Walden Media. Lewis was also the focus of the Academy Award-nominated film, "Shadowlands," starring Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger.
"The Great Divorce" is an adventure tale about one man's journey from the post-apocalyptic world of Grey Town to the outskirts of heaven.
Beloved has hired director David L. Cunningham ("To End All Wars," "Seeker: The Dark is Rising") to helm.
