Rush frontman-bassist Geddy Lee, Simple Minds lead singer Jim Kerr and Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley appear in a new documentary about the origins and high points of pioneering Toronto radio station Cfny.
Veteran film producer Matt Schichter makes his directorial debut with Cfny: The Spirit of Radio, which has just wrapped post production. Other artists appearing in the doc include Steven Page (Barenaked Ladies), Peter Hook (New Order/Joy Division), Lol Tolhurst (The Cure), Emily Haines (Metric), Ben Kowalewicz (Billy Talent) and Andy McCluskey (Omd).
During the 1970s and 1980s, major record companies and large independent labels relied on records being played on local radio in major markets to promote commercial releases. Toronto’s Cfny, which launched in a small city suburb in 1960, eventually became hugely influential in breaking punk and new wave acts after evolving into an alternative radio station on the FM dial.

Perry Cross, who served as Johnny Carson’s first producer on The Tonight Show before he exited to run an ABC program hosted by Jerry Lewis that came and went after 13 episodes, has died. He was 95.
Cross died March 9 of kidney cancer at a hospital in Los Angeles, his son, Larry Cross, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Cross started out producing Ernie Kovacs’ CBS weekday morning show in 1952 and also worked on The Red Skelton Hour, Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In, The Dinah Shore Chevy Show, The Soupy Sales Show, Life With Linkletter, The Garry Moore Show and several Jonathan Winters live specials during his career.

Now that we’re into a new year, the recorded music industry is evaluating the last 12 months.
Luminate (formerly Nielsen) is the company that monitors all the music Canadians buy and listen to, from streams to CDs to LPs to cassettes. Here are some highlights from 2022.
Total consumption of music was up.

In the olden days, we measured music consumption by the number of albums sold combined with radio airplay. Now things have to be weighted between sales, TEAs, and SEAs. Add everything together and Canadians consumed 11.2 per cent more music in 2022 than we did in 2021.
Breaking that down further, we consumed 93.2 million albums. If we look at individual songs, the number is 89.8 million.
