No genre knows how to express emotions quite like the classic rock power ballad. Case in point: Reo Speedwagon’s “Can’t Fight This Feeling.” A member of the band explained why he wrote it in the first place. Notably, a famous kids’ movie made the song prominent again.
Reo Speedwagon’s ‘Can’t Fight This Feeling’ is about multiple people
“Can’t Fight This Feeling” was written and co-produced by Reo Speedwagon’s Kevin Cronin. During a 2017 interview with Songfacts, he was asked if “Can’t Fight This Feeling” was about a specific individual. He said the tune was about an amalgamation of people. Like many of Cronin’s songs, “Can’t Fight This Feeling” was inspired by something that made him have an emotional reaction.
“But really, what the song is about was about my inability to have the courage to express myself,” Cronin said. “I was brought up in an Irish-Catholic family,...

Whether you love or hate power ballads, they defined classic rock music during the 1980s. Reo Speedwagon’s “Keep On Loving You” is one of the most famous examples of this trend. Judging from that title, it would be a good song to play at weddings. A member of the band contests that interpretation.
A member of Reo Speedwagon feels some fans misunderstand ‘Keep On Loving You’
“Keep On Loving You” was written and co-produced by Reo Speedwagon’s Kevin Cronin. During a 2017 interview with Songfacts, Cronin gave fans insight into “Keep On Loving You.”
“It’s funny, because a lot of people over the years have told me how they played that song at their wedding and it was the first dance at their wedding, or it’s ‘their song’ with their boyfriend or girlfriend,” he said. “My first thought is always, ‘Wait. Did you listen to the verses of the song?...

Only melodramatic soft rock can fully conjure the necromantic schmaltz of Lisa Frankenstein, a new comedy about a teenager seducing a long-dead corpse. So JoJo recorded an extra kitschy rendition of Reo Speedwagon’s “Can’t Fight This Feeling” for the picture.
A music video shows the movie’s Lisa (actress Kathryn Newton) at a piano with its Creature (Cole Sprouse) as JoJo croons Kevin Cronin’s midnight confessions. “I can’t fight this feeling any longer/Yet I’m still afraid to let it flow.” She sings the lyrics from the heart,...

Dolly Parton isn’t done rocking yet. After sharing her new album Rockstar last week, our November cover star has returned with two new bonus tracks: Her rendition of the Eddie Money’s “Two Tickets to Paradise,” plus a new version of her classic “Jolene” featuring Måneskin.
The Måneskin-assisted version of “Jolene” is available exclusively with the digital download version of Rockstar on Parton’s website, though the country icon did share a preview of the duet on Instagram. It sounds like the new recording stays fairly faithful to the original, with Måneskin’s Damiano David taking on co-lead vocals with Parton.
“Jolene” appears on the deluxe edition of Rockstar, which also features guest features from Sting, Steve Perry, Joan Jett, Mick Fleetwood, Pat Benatar, Brandi Carlile, and many, many more. See a preview clip of Måneskin’s take on “Jolene” below.

Speaking with Paramore’s Hayley Williams for Consequence’s most recent cover story, Parton explained that when she found out she was voted into the Rock Hall, she “didn’t feel like [she’d] earned it.” To make up for that, she got into the studio and cut a proper rock album, without cutting any corners. “That was important to me: not to half-ass do a record that’s a country girl singing some rock,...

Katy Perry Makes ‘Incredible’ Transformation Into Disney Superhero For ‘American Idol”s Disney Night
Katy Perry channeled her inner Disney supermom powers for Sunday’s special themed episode of “American Idol”.
For Disney night, the singer decided to dress up like Elastigirl (a.k.a. Mrs. Incredible) from “The Incredibles”.
“I figured out that Mother’s Day and Disney Night were the same night. I had a whole different costume — maybe we’ll never ever see it maybe we’ll see it next time — but I went, ‘No, we’ve got to be the most iconic Disney mom,’ and it’s Elastigirl,” Perry said while speaking with Et’s Denny Directo following Sunday’s new “Idol” episode.
According to Perry, she spent a lot of time watching the movie with her 2-year-old daughter, Daisy — whom she shares with Orlando Bloom — to prepare for embodying the iconic character.

It’s probably safe to say that Dolly Parton will be the only artist this year (and possibly ever) whose new album will include features by Lizzo, Rob Halford, Paul McCartney, and Stevie Nicks. The dual Country Music and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member’s long-awaited rock project Rockstar will bow Nov. 17 and includes more than 40 guests across its 30 tracks.
Largely a covers project, Rockstar includes Parton’s versions of 21 classics along with nine originals. The tracklist announced on Tuesday shows that she reprises many songs with their original performers,...

Upon her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year, Dolly Parton announced her intention to record a rock album. “If I’m gonna be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I’m gonna have to earn it,” she said at the time.
Parton has spent the last year making good on that promise by enlisting some of the biggest names in music to join her in recording a mix of rock ‘n’ roll originals and covers. The end result, aptly titled Rockstar, will arrive on November 17th via her own Butterfly Records in conjunction with Big Machine Label Group.
When Dolly calls, everyone answer. Just look at the massive 30-song tracklist for Rockstar: there’s literally a Beatles reunion! Steve Perry sings a Journey song! Lizzo plays jazz flute on “Stairway to Heaven”!

Kenny Loggins’ 1986 hit “Danger Zone” is climbing the iTunes chart again thanks to the phenomenal box office success of “Top Gun: Maverick.”
The song first roared to success when it appeared in the original film and on the soundtrack. “Danger Zone” was composed by Giorgio Moroder and the lyrics were written by Tom Whitlock. Before Loggins walked in the door and added his ideas to the tune, the song went through different vocalists including Reo Speedwagon’s Kevin Cronin, but Cronin couldn’t hit the high notes.
Loggins could and did.
The “Top Gun” soundtrack would go on to become one of the biggest-selling movie albums of all-time, so its sequel, “Top Gun: Maverick,” seemed a natural place to revisit the song.
Loggins spoke with Variety about re-recording “Danger Zone,” but why the original was deemed superior, and his upcoming autobiography, “Still Alright,” out June 14.

Reo Speedwagon had kind of a rocky start to begin with but eventually came together as a band and named themselves after a type of truck that one of the members had been studying during his time in college. Since then they’ve been one of the more popular but lesser known bands that have made big contributions to pop culture during their tenure. I say lesser known mostly because while they’re still a known and popular band they’re one of the many that kind of got lost once the 80’s and 90’s rolled around. They remained in the industry but

Nostalgia may be based in the past, but it’s the future of entertainment. That’s how the media landscape has felt of late, with decades-old film franchises like “Star Wars” coming back to a very prosperous life, revivals like “Gilmore Girls” and “Will & Grace” dominating television, and everything from superhero movies to “Stranger Things” mining our childhoods for fresh material.
So as “When the Street Lights Go On” began and a familiar ’80s melody played over a montage of well-known events from 1983, wariness was the first feeling to set in: Here comes another attempt at manipulating our shared memories into “new” entertainment built on old ideas. But the deliberate and distinctive pacing combined with a uniquely mysterious presentation elevates the Paramount pilot above more overt nostalgia traps. And, more shocking still, its clever blend of on-the-nose songs from 1983 and lesser known numbers of the same year quickly and decisively help ground the pilot.

The numbers don’t lie, and they spell disaster for “The Neon Demon” at the box office. Nicolas Winding Refn’s fashion-world fantasia made just over $600,000 at 783 theaters in its opening weekend, which comes out to an anemic $775 per-theater average. The Danish auteur has expressed interest in many projects as he moves forward — a French police-procedural miniseries appears to be his next — few of which make as much twisted sense as one he mentioned a Business Insider interview: Batgirl.

Eat That Question: Frank Zappa In His Own Words takes its title from a song found on the composer’s 1972 fusion album The Grand Wazoo, and there may be no better preparation for the Frank Zappa revealed in director Thorston Schutte’s extraordinary documentary than this command to consume, and then presumably digest and defecate out, the sort of journalistic queries Zappa routinely endured, with patience, smarts and inescapable sarcasm, throughout his career. “Being interviewed is one of the most abnormal things that you can do to somebody,” Zappa explains during a TV interview to a reporter whose expression, an uneasy mixture of intimidation and confusion, remains constant throughout their encounter.
The composer’s testy relationship with the media is one of the threads that unites Schutte’s somewhat unusual approach—there are none of the usual associates, scholars and friends on hand to tell you secondhand (at best) what a genius Zappa was,...

$200-million sequel “Independence Day: Resurgence” (20th Century Fox), among the most expensive summer 2016 releases, will test the idea that the public demands something new in a sequel in order to rush out to see it.
With the studio largely skipping pre-release screenings for domestic critics (London reviews were mixed), Fox is banking that two-decade-plus memories of the first film (whose star Will Smith did not return) and selling a surplus of action, effects and 3D beyond what was available in 1996 would give it life.
The first version was the biggest film of 1996, with an adjusted domestic gross of $594 million off a $97 million opening. That made it the fifth-ranked gross of the 90s, and until now was one of the few live-action blockbusters of recent years to lack a sequel.
Director Roland Emmerich went on to further success: six films with domestic grosses, again adjusted, over $100 million, led by “The Day After Tomorrow” and “Godzilla.

For years, people have been asking Nicolas Winding Refn about the possibility of having a sequel to his 2011 hit film “Drive,” starring Ryan Gosling. Back in 2012, he got many people’s hopes up when he revealed that he was considering a spin-off, “The character of The Driver might return in another film. We’re playing with that idea. We’ll see what happens,” he told The Evening Standard at the time.
But now, years later, he sets the record straight on a potential “Drive 2.”
“No, there will never be a second ‘Drive’ movie,” the helmer told Inverse. When asked if it was because of the “perfect” ending he replied, “No, it ends too imperfectly. And that’s why it works.”

Composer Cliff Martinez, who previously worked with Refn on “Drive” and “Only God Forgives,” recently talked to Kcrw’s The Treatment about crafting long, drawn out compositions for the director. “Nicolas Refn was the first director that I worked with that told me, ‘Give me a nine minute queue for these five scenes,’” Martinez said. “[T]hat happened in ‘Drive’ and up until then I had done four, five minutes at most.”

“The Pusher Trilogy.” “Bronson.” “Valhalla Rising.” “Drive.” “Only God Forgives.” Even if you’re not entirely caught up on Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn’s entire oeuvre, you’re probably still aware of the infamous receptions many of them have received. You may have been scarred by the screams and punches of “Bronson” or turned off by the comically absurd violence of “Only God Forgives,” but that’s likely the reaction the director wants you to have. We’ve been fascinated by Refn’s insane quotes and anecdotes from interviews, so below we have assembled a collection of some of our favorites.
Fair warning: You may find some of these incredulous. Or disgusting.

“It’s good to have good girls around,” Ruby coos. Jesse nods in agreement, her body and face still glistening with the gold body paint that sleazy-but-famous photographer Jack (Desmond Harrington) smeared all over her during a particularly racy photo shoot.
It’s a sweet moment. Ruby appears to lean into a maternal role for Jesse, who might need some help navigating her new industry. But soon Jesse balks, firing off a terse comment about not being as helpless as Ruby thinks and stalking away from her apparently concerned friend.
Later, Ruby’s words prove prescient,...
