Mel Gibson's first film since his rants to ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva were revealed will be released in spring 2011. 'The Beaver', which also stars Jodie Foster, sees Mel playing a man who speaks to a beaver hand puppet and was initially set for release in 2010 before being put back by Summit Entertainment who are believed to have deemed the recordings too damaging to the possibilities of the film., Deadline.com reports. However, a CBS News/Vanity Fair poll discovered earlier this year just over three quarters of people did not make note of his personal life when going to see his films, possibly pushing Summit into releasing the film early next year. Jodie has recently said Mel's turn in the film was "one of his most powerful and moving perfomrnaces" he had ever done. Troubled Mel was last seen as the character Thomas Craven in 'Edge of Darkness',...

An audio recording of the alleged Mel Gibson's racist and sexist outburst at his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva has been made available for listening. Brought forth by Radar Online, the two-minute tape hears the Thomas Craven of "Edge of Darkness" as he berated Oksana for her appearance and choice of clothing.
The audio starts off with the 54-year-old actor picked on the Russian pianist over her breast implants. He says, "So you're not lying to me about fake t**s?" When she answers "I never have," Mel gets enraged and accuses her of having lied to him. He goes on to criticize her over her breasts, saying "They look ridiculous. Get rid of them why don't you."
The war of words continues as Mel turns his outburst to the way she dressed. "You go out in public and it's a f*****g embarrassment to me. You look like a f*****g bitch in heat,...

Edge of Darkness
The original drama series Edge of Darkness was broadcast on BBC in bleaker times, the 1980s when the English public was preoccupied with the thoughts of the murky nature of the Thatcherite state and an impending nuclear winter. Edge of Darkness has now been revived on film and comes across as relevant and important as it must have been in 80s. After all, Bhopal ‘84, and Chernobyl ’86 are no different from the recent Gulf of Mexico disaster.
Director Martin Campbell – director of the original series and also of two Bond films, Golden Eye and Casino Royale – brings out and reconciles, in under two hours, the crime drama and political thriller themes of the original story quite well here, except that Edge of Darkness has less of an edge and more of darkness.
Thomas Craven, played superbly by Mel Gibson, is a police detective meeting his daughter Emma (Bojana Novakovic) after a long time.

“Give me back my son!” Errr… Daughter! After a five-year hiatus from the screen, Mel Gibson returned in Martin Campbell’s Edge of Darkness. The film about Boston cop Thomas Craven, whose daughter is murdered under mysterious circumstances, was tailor made for an actor like Mel. Acting is said to be all in the eyes, and through several close-ups of Gibson you will immediately feel Craven’s pain – even if the actual story loses you from time to time. If you’ve seen Mystic River and Ransom, Edge of Darkness will feel very familiar to you. Mel Gibson is back to basics in this film, playing the tortured soul. Instead of losing a wife, like in Braveheart, or a son, like in Ransom, he’s lost his daughter. Edge of Darkness quickly grabs you within the first ten minutes. After picking up his daughter Emma (Bojana Novakovic) from the airport,...

There's a certain old school charm about Edge of Darkness, which is otherwise a rather run of the mill suspense "thriller." Mel Gibson is Thomas Craven, a Boston detective with a lot of years on the force, and less than ten minutes into the film his daughter is gunned down while standing right next to him, on his own front porch. It's pretty easy to assume, especially since the gunman yelled, "Craven," before firing, that the senior Craven was the target, but the investigation doesn't seem to lead in that direction. Craven discovers that his daughter was mixed up in something pretty big, and his investigation takes him through a bizarre mystery, and none of it seems to make a lot of sense. It's a film that reminds of several classics, and moreover an overall theory from an earlier time in filmcraft, but it clearly wears a new skin. That makes sense,...

Chicago – When Wgn-tv’s Dean Richards asked Mel Gibson whether he believes the public will perceive him in a different light after “all that’s been in the news” about him, the “Edge of Darkness” star answered by calling Richards an “a—hole.” This amusing interview-turned-Internet sensation once again proved that Gibson clearly has issues.
Yet like many similarly troubled and personally flawed artists, from Woody Allen to Roman Polanski, Gibson’s inner demons have actually enhanced his work rather than detracted from it. His four directorial efforts, stretching all the way back to 1993’s “The Man Without a Face,” are all blatantly colored by Gibson’s deep-seated masochism. “Passion of the Christ” is as much an act of self-flagellation as it is a blood-drenched tribute to Jesus’s sacrifice. It certainly wasn’t a throwaway decision by Gibson to cast himself as the hands that crucify Christ. In “Edge of Darkness,...

Plot: A man (Gibson) investigates his daughter’s murder and subsequently uncovers a horrifying government conspiracy.
Who’S It For?: Gibson fans should be happy with this old-school thriller. He’s a man on a mission, and that’s about it.
Movie:
Gibson fits quite nicely in this role as a cop looking for the revenge of his daughter’s death. “I’m the guy with nothing to lose.” That’s what Tommy says during this story. You totally believe him. Edge of Darkness (Blu-ray)
No, “Edge of Darkness” does not describe Mel Gibson’s location as he fends off swirling rumors about infidelity. Instead, it’s a comeback-project of sorts, a return to acting after Gibson spent consecutive years in the director’s chair helming “The Passion of the Christ” and “Apocalypto.”
The good news? Gibson didn’t forget how to play a bloodthirsty, vengeful bad ass during his self-imposed, seven-year acting hiatus. That inner pool of feral rage and icy intensity Gibson routinely dips into has more than enough liquid left for one last dunk, even if it’s in service of a role Gibson has explored countless times before.

Mel Gibson finds it "thrilling" to play miserable characters. The Hollywood actor - who stars as Thomas Craven, a homicide detective investigating the death of his activist daughter in 'The Edge of Darkness' - enjoys taking on unhappy roles, despite how difficult they can be, because it makes him appreciate his own life. He said: "I'm not good at suffering. I scream my lungs out and hate it. But there's one advantage to it: you become humble and in the end you will find redemption. I admit it's a very thrilling process for me... I like to deal with it over and over again." The 54-year-old star spent six years working behind the camera before making his comeback with 'The...

He has chased after his kidnapped son, watched his wife murdered by English soldiers and become one, unstable, half of a cop duo. Now, after seven years absent from the big screen Mel Gibson (or “Mad Mel” as he has been named) returns as cop father Thomas Craven investigating the brutal murder of his young daughter (Bojana Novakovic). Behind the camera is Martin Campbell, responsible for updating James Bond not once but twice (first with Goldeneye, my favourite Bond film, and then again with Casino Royale 11 years later). My admiration for his work in the Bond franchise is one reason I looked forward to this thriller. Campbell also directed the original BBC television series of the same name back in 1985 (a show which I am admittedly too young to remember). Shortly after Craven’s daughter arrives at her father’s home she is gunned down on the doorstep after being...

He's a man with everything to gain, and nothing to lose. Mel Gibson is Thomas Craven, a veteran homicide detective in Boston. When his activist daughter Emma, played by Bojana Novakovic, is gunned down at his home, Thomas sets out to find her assailant in the Edge of Darkness (2010). Under the assumption that the bullet was meant for himself, Thomas struggles with guilt and remorse until further investigation reveals an unexpected scenario. His daughter was leading a secret life, which was the real reason for her demise. His discovery of corporate and government cover-ups lead him down a path of vengeance, as he unravels clues that point to the killer. Thomas enlists the help of Darius Jedburgh, played by Ray Winstone, a government operative who has been assigned the task of cleaning up the situation, and covering up Emma's murder. The two encounter mercenaries, lawyers, a Senator, radioactive poisoning, and...

Based on the 1985 series that is still regarded as one of the finest pieces of TV drama produced in Britain, and directed by the same director Martin Campbell (now better known for his work on the James Bond series), Edge of Darkness comes laden with expectations as it also marks Mel Gibson’s first lead role in almost a decade. However, from the first days of initial shooting the odds seemed to be stacked against the film with the news that Robert De Niro had been replaced thanks to ‘creative differences’ - surely the most over-used euphemism in Hollywood – and so it comes as no surprise that ultimately the film doesn’t work. Primarily the problem with Edge of Darkness is that it’s so dour and dreary. Although it’s admirable for a big-budget thriller to attempt to tackle genuinely painful emotions in having Mel Gibson’s character Thomas Craven...

Edge of Darkness begins with three bodies bubbling to the top of an otherwise picturesque river. It's a less than subtle way for the filmmakers to say, "Don't get too comfortable" since the thriller's first few moments would seem innocuous otherwise. The early domestic scenes show both the closeness and distance between Boston Detective Thomas Craven (Mel Gibson) and his 24-year-old daughter Emma (Bojana Novakovic, Drag Me to Hell), flashing back to her youth and revealing a persistent affection in the present despite her quietness about her work.
Emma has a secret that she wishes to tell her father, but a killer's bullet stops her confession in a particularly brutal scene that has her slamming through her father's front door. Though the film makes it seem as though Craven's work as a detective made him the murderer's target, the movie's trailers tell us in two minutes what it takes Edge of Darkness...

After a seven year hiatus from acting, Mel Gibson and his scowling features return to the silver screen more creased and fatigued than you might remember and angrier than he’s ever been. Channeling the vintage Mad Mel of Payback and Ransom, the 56-year-old glowers his way through yet another revenge plot in a formidable comeback performance as the “guy with nothing to lose.”

Mel Gibsons latest foray into film is Edge of Darkness and for a change he is not behind the camera but instead in front of it. Based on the engrossing 1985 BBC TV series of the same name, Edge Of Darkness opens with Mel Gibson, as Boston Homicide Detective Thomas Craven, meeting his daughter, Emma (Bojana Novakovic), who’s come home for a surprise visit, at the train station. However, once home she begins mysteriously vomiting blood and, as the two race out into the pouring rain to the hospital, Emma is violently shot by a ski-masked gunman. She subsequently dies in her father’s arms and the murder is considered some kind of retaliation for Craven’s past police work. It’s only after she’s dead, that Craven becomes inconsolable upon discovering his daughter’s secret life as an activist and that her death was really a political assassination stemming from a corporate cover-up and government complicity. Here is where director Martin Campbell’s thriller of revenge begins.

Mel Gibson is earning rave reviews for his portrayal of a tough Boston Irish cop in "The Edge of Darkness." Gibson (above) plays detective Thomas Craven, "a cop with nothing to lose who doesn't give a [bleep]," on a mission to hunt down his daughter's killers. The movie is the first starring role for Gibson since his drunken anti-Semitic outburst made headlines round the world. Gibson's public persona took a hammering after that incident and then there's also the well-publicized family matter where he left his long-time wife for a much younger woman. He wisely stayed off the screen but "The Edge of Darkness," shows him back to form. Gibson was always best playing the unhinged. Think of the Mad Maxes and the Lethal Weapons and you get the picture. In "Darkness," Craven discovers corporate cover-ups go hand-in-hand with government collusion are both involved in the murder of his daughter. He...

Edge of Darkness Gk Films/Warner Bros. Pictures Movies starring Mel Gibson usually draw audiences to theaters like moths to a light. However, his latest endeavor, the thriller Edge of Darkness, leaves edges unraveled thanks to a plot with many holes. This summation of the film is not an attack on Gibson's acting. In fact, the acting in the movie from all involved is superb. Too bad the storyline couldn't keep up with the caliber of the performances. The movie follows Thomas Craven (Gibson), a Boston Police Department detective, as he tries to discover who murdered his only daughter Emma (Bojana Novakovic) when she comes home for a visit. As the trailer implies, it appears at first to be a shot gone awry -- one where the bullet was intended for him, not his daughter. For those wondering if Mel Gibson still has the moxie to carry a film, Martin Campbell’s new revenge thriller Edge of Darkness should answer all lingering doubts and silence the naysayers. Gibson is back and he brought enough bullets for everybody.
Edge of Darkness, based on the 1985 BBC miniseries, which was also directed by Campbell, centers on Thomas Craven (Gibson), a Boston detective whose estranged daughter Emma (Bojana Novakovic) is brutally slain in front of his home. Police believe the killing was accidental and that the real target was the elder Craven. As the investigation begins, Craven discovers oddities in Emma’s belongings such as a gun and a radiation detector. Edge of Darkness Directed by: Martin Campbell Written by: William Monaghan and Andrew Bovell Starring: Mel Gibson, Ray Winstone, Danny Huston, Bojana Novakovic It's been 8 years since Mel Gibson last graced the big screen, and yet, somehow it doesn't feel like he's been away all that long. Maybe it's because in the meantime he's managed to direct two impressive and uncompromising films, and he also found the time to get arrested for drunk driving. Still, a lot of people have been talking about Edge of Darkness like it's some big comeback, and they weren't sure whether he had it in him anymore. Well, Mel definitely delivers, although the rest of the movie around him is not necessarily perfect. The marketing left a lot of people thinking that this was going to be a Taken clone, but that's not quite true. Based on a BBC mini-series from the mid-'80s, Edge of Darkness...

After a self-imposed seven-year hiatus, Mel Gibson returns to the screen as the lead in the thriller Edge of Darkness. The film's screenplay was written by William Monahan (Body of Lies, Kingdom of Heaven) and Andrew Bovell (Strictly Ballroom), but the real backbone of the plot comes from the BBC miniseries written by the late Troy Kennedy-Martin, who is best known for war classic Kelly's Heroes (1970) and The Italian Job (1969 and 2003 remake).
Boston homicide detective Thomas Craven (Gibson) should have seen enough violence and bloodshed to be desensitized after so many years on the force. When his 24-year-old daughter Emma (Bojana Novakovic) is gunned down on the front steps of his house, the impact is devastating -- not only because Craven has lost his only child, but apparently he was the intended target. However, while trying to identify who would have wanted him dead, he discovers that he knows very little about his daughter.

Photo: Warner Bros. If you were looking for Edge of Darkness to be as entertaining as last year's vengeful father thriller Taken you will be sorely disappointed. However, WB shouldn't be on the lookout for a similar return as the "from the director of Casino Royale" tagline and what's left of Mel Gibson's star power is sure to only grant this film a modest opening weekend as word-of-mouth won't be strong.

However, WB shouldn't be on the lookout for a similar return as the "from the director of Casino Royale" tagline and what's left of Mel Gibson's star power is sure to only grant this film a modest opening weekend as word-of-mouth won't be strong.
Written by the same man that turned the Hong Kong thriller "Infernal Affairs" into the Boston area crime drama The Departed, William Monahan, this time, adapts the 1985 BBC miniseries of the same name into another Boston adventure and while...

“Edge of Darkness” is directed by Martin Campbell (“Casino Royale,” “Mask of Zorro”) who, interestingly enough, is remaking the film from an award-winning six-hour BBC miniseries he directed 25 years ago.
Campbell is working from a screenplay adapted from that series by two seasoned scribes: William Monohan (“The Departed,” another remake transplanted to Boston) and Andrew Bovell (who brought similar, moody twist-turning to 2001’s underrated “Lantana”).
Now 54, Gibson is grayer and grimmer. The part of Craven leaves little room for humor, but the wildness and fire that once exploded unpredictably from Gibson is much dimmed after several hard years for the actor…read more [The Olympian]
This really is the perfect comeback role for Mel, one that harks back to some of his most memorable roles, but also allowing him to stretch as an actor, returning after eight years with a new perspective and maturity towards what his job as actor entails. There...

But as time goes on, he realizes her life was not what he thought it was, and her death was part of a much bigger conspiracy. Review: I find myself in a very odd position here. In choosing to return to the well with a much smaller bucket, Martin Campbell will have known that diluting his acclaimed six hour 1985 BBC mini series Edge of Darkness into a two hour thriller would be a minefield.
Bringing Mel Gibson on board was seemingly a good move; out of the acting spotlight for a good seven years the return to the screen of one of Hollywood’s most recognisable talents has served the hype wagon well, and this film has been sold entirely on Gibson himself.
Gibson is a Boston detective whose daughter, a MIT grad and employee of an ostensibly benign R&D company, returns home to be suddenly gunned down on her father’s doorstep. The Boston police believe Gibson’s character Thomas Craven was the target, not so Mr. Gibson, who finds a series of clues which will lead him to discover his daughter’s activist past and a deeper,...

Review in a Hurry: Five years after last appearing onscreen (as a jokey cameo in Paparazzi), Mad Mel Gibson is back, and as one might expect, he's brought with him a heaping helping of brutal violence, Catholicism, and conspiracy theory. It's unfortunate he couldn't find a better script in all that time, but you can't have everything. The Bigger Picture: With the lines in his face now making him look like he stepped right out of a Frank Miller comic (seriously, if there's ever a Sin City 2, he needs to be in it), Gibson brings his more-convincing-than-ever loose cannon persona to the role of Thomas Craven, a traditionalist Boston cop whose teenage daughter returns home mysteriously ill, only to be shot to...

Edge of Darkness will get more attention for Mel Gibson.s return to acting than for being a remake of an .80s British TV series. Gibson plays Thomas Craven, a homicide detective who sees his daughter murdered on his front step. Investigating her death, he uncovers a bigger conspiracy.

.I watched it back in the .80s, avidly,. Gibson said of the original. .Avidly. It was some of the best TV I.d ever seen and British television at that time was great. We.ve all talked about that but I made a point to not watch it, because I didn.t want it to be a part of that, but to just try and be truthful. Ray Winstone (“Beowulf”) stars opposite Mel Gibson in Martin Campbell’s new thriller, “Edge of Darkness.” The emotionally charged film, set at the intersection of politics and big business, tells the tale of Thomas Craven (Gibson), a veteran homicide detective for the Boston Police Department and a single father.
When his only child, 24-year-old Emma (Bojana Novakovic), is murdered on the steps of his home, everyone assumes that he was the target. But Craven begins to suspect otherwise and embarks on a mission to uncover the truth. His investigation leads him into a dangerous world of corporate cover-ups, government collusion and murder – and to shadowy government operative Darius Jedburgh (Winstone), who has been sent in to clean up the evidence.

This week sees the release of Martin Campbell’s Edge of Darkness. Mel Gibson stars as homicide detective Thomas Craven. When his activist daughter is murdered, Craven embarks on a campaign to find the killer, and take vengeance. Edge of Darkness marks Mel Gibson’s first lead role for eight years, his last being 2002’s Signs.
It also marks a return to his hard boiled action roots. Gibson hit the scene in 1979’s Mad Max. He played the title role, a man driven to the edge with rage following the murder of his wife and child. Along with the Mad Max sequels, Gibson hit the big time as another unhinged tough guy, again after his wife was killed. Martin Riggs in Lethal Weapon made Gibson an action star of the 80’s. With his newfound success, his characters became much more sanitized. He still did action movies, but the grit was gone.

By Harvey Karten - Filmed in the (until recently) heavily Democratic state of Massachusetts, "Edge of Darkness" gains its inspiration from a beloved, BAFTA-award-receiving British mini-series written by Troy Kennedy Martin. The mini-series-given the fears of nuclear catastrophe that hovered over the Isles in the mid-eighties-had a heavy impact at the time of its release in Britain during the Thatcher era. Now available in DVD, that drama began as a conventional whodunit but spun off into a political and social commentary about the British government, which those on the left believed to be driving the world to catastrophe. The role of Bob Peck, an anguished police detective, is now, in the movie version, in the hands of Mel Gibson, fresh from a five-year break in film appearances. Gibson, as Detective Thomas Craven, projects of the same depression and anxiety that informed his psyche in the Lethal Weapon series. This time,...

.It.s funny because the parts you really want to play are the emotional parts,. Winstone said. .I do anyway, personally. To sit across the table or sit in the garden watching someone play the emotional part [makes me jealous.].
Alas, it was Winstone.s job to be the heavy.

Not many directors get to make a TV mini-series and then create a movie based on the same material 25 years later, but that's exactly what Martin Campbell has done with Edge of Darkness. The director spoke with ComingSoon about why he returned to the story so many years later.
What happened was that someone suggested making it into a movie way back in 2000, and I was kind of lukewarm about it. I thought, "Oh, well ... maybe they can get some money to develop the thing," and over the next five or six years, a writer called Andrew Bovell, a very good writer from Australia, sort of whittled it down from six hours to where it is now, a two-hour movie. I was doing other projects, Casino" [Royale] amongst them, and this was being developed as it were behind me, and then at about the sixth draft, it was shaping up pretty well,...

The last time ComingSoon.net spoke to director Martin Campbell, it was during the press tour for his Bond reboot Casino Royale , and it's hard to believe that was over three years ago. Campbell is back with the suspense thriller Edge of Darkness , a movie adapted from the six-hour BBC mini-series of the same name Campbell directed back in 1985. It also marks the return of Mel Gibson, actor, back and better than ever in a role that's perfectly suited to his skills as a leading man that have laid dormant since 2002's Signs . In the movie, Gibson plays Thomas Craven, a Boston police detective looking to get answers and possible revenge against those responsible for the brutal murder of his daughter, and getting in over his head when he encounters Darius Jedburgh, played by Ray...

MoviesOnline caught up recently with director Martin Campbell who spoke with us in Los Angeles about his new thriller, “Edge of Darkness,” starring Mel Gibson, Ray Winstone and Danny Huston. The film is a remake of Campbell’s original BBC mini-series about a Boston homicide detective, Thomas Craven, who sets out to solve the mystery behind his daughter’s violent death. In the process, he uncovers a vast conspiracy at the highest levels of our government.
For Campbell, revisiting the film’s characters and themes after two decades presented an exciting challenge. “Just as it did years ago, I thought that the heartfelt story of a man losing his daughter, and going off after revenge, could just really capture an audience today.”
The New Zealand native most recently directed the hugely successful James Bond adventure “Casino Royale,” that introduced Daniel Craig in the role of Bond. Prior to that, he...

There's an epidemic going around during past couple of months. People are killing young women-in the movies. In Peter Jackson's "The Lovely Bones," 14-year-old Susie Salmon played by Saoirse Ronan is raped and murdered near her home. The dead girl is intent on killing the murderer, whose death would release her from the clouds and gain her entrance to heaven. In Pierre Morel's "Taken," Bryan Mills, played by Liam Neeson, suffers the murder of his daughter. His response? "I know who you are. If you let my daughter go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not lok for you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you." Martin Campbell's "Edge of Darkness" finds Thomas Craven in pursuit of the shotgun slaying of his 24-year-old daughter. Forget the law. Justice is too slow. These survivors want revenge.
