Are Walt and Jessie going their separate ways on Breaking Bad? Sure looks that way since Damages evildoer David Costabile is joining the AMC drama as Walt's (Bryan Cranston) new assistant, Gale. Described as an eager student and a brilliant chemist, Gale is the antithesis of Jessie (Aaron Paul) in that he's more interested in the magic of chemistry than getting rich. Costabile's casting isn't necessarily confirmation that Jessie will go rogue in season 3. But given the mounting tension between mentor and protégé, it's certainly plausible. Costabile, who also recurs as Mel's hubby on Flight of the Conchords, is on »

Last night's Emmy Awards were a virtually scare-free zone (unless you count the abysmal hosting duties of Neil Patrick Harris). Dexter lost to Mad Men in the drama category. And Michael C. Hall lost to Bryan Cranston, while Jimmy Smits lost to Michael J. Fox. True Blood did get an award – sort of. The scene where Bill and Sookie meet for the first time, in the show's pilot episode, won some sort of "Breakout Performance" award, as voted by the viewer. As far as I can tell, this award carries with it no statuette, no cash prize, not even a pat on the back. But genre fans can take some comfort in the fact that Lost's Michael Emerson won his second Emmy for his work... »

Hey, remember the Emmys last year when five different reality show hosts tackled the duties of hosting the show? Yeah, me either. Dismal ratings required a change of course, and this year the Emmys were…dare I say it…entertaining! Thanks in large part to Neil Patrick Harris’s impeccable charm and wit, the 2009 Emmy Awards were enjoyable start to finish.
A dapper Neil Patrick Harris (let’s call him Nph for brevity’s sake) was the perfect host. He started off the show with a musical number that was not awful, and kept the show going at a steady clip throughout the night. His performance garnered accolades from Ricky Gervais and John Stewart, along with millions of us watching at home. A few highlights from the evening:

Well thank goodness Neil Patrick Harris and John Hodgman were a kick, huh? Because the list of Emmy winners themselves did nothing to shake up the ceremony this year. While the smooth host won praise and the telecast did seem fresher overall — loved the way they broke it into comedy, reality, miniseries/movie, and drama, all the better to clean the kitchen during the miniseries/movie segment — the actual choices were a bit of a yawn. That's not to say they weren't absolutely right in most major cases: 30 Rock (cast pictured) and Mad Men are truly worthy of praise, and furthermore, they still don't get ratings worthy of their greatness. But for the second year in a row, the pair took the top prizes. (It was 30 Rock's third consecutive best comedy win, putting it in the rare company of Taxi, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, All in the Family, and Frasier. »

Even though he wasn't at Sunday night's 61st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, Kanye West still loomed large over the event. While critically acclaimed TV shows like "30 Rock" and "Mad Men" were scooping up repeat wins, jokes about West's stage-busting outburst at the previous week's VMAs were par for the course.
Among the surprise winners were Australian actress Toni Collette, who beat out "30 Rock" star Tina Fey for Best Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as a woman with multiple personalities in Showtime's "United States of Tara" (written by "Juno" and "Jennifer's Body" scribe Diablo Cody). Collette was almost upstaged, however, by fellow nominee Sarah Silverman, who grabbed the spotlight by sporting a fake mustache during the »

Last night heralded one of the biggest events in television, and the evening had its share of surprises - thank God. Three hours of watching only "Mad Men" and "30 Rock" rack up awards, as many had anticipated, would have proved to be pretty deadly...(not that the three-hour show didn't have its share of deadly moments. Could someone please teach Blake Lively to read? Then again, when you look that good in a low-cut red dress, who needs reading anyway?)The best acting in a drama series award was something of an upset, going for the second year in a row to Bryan Cranston of "Breaking Bad," as opposed to "Mad Men's" biggest heartthrob, Jon Ha ... »

Chicago Tribune (McT) -- Chicago — The 2009 Emmys looked a lot like the 2008 Emmys, when it came to the winners. Once again, Tina Fey picked up a best comedy statue for "30 Rock" (it was the NBC show's third win). "Mad Men" won for a second time as best drama. Glenn Close and Bryan Cranston picked up their second Emmys in the lead drama acting categories, for "Damages" and "Breaking Bad," respectively, and Alec Baldwin also won a second time for his performance as network executive Jack Donaghy on "30 Rock." The 2009 Emmy Awards had a lot of surprises to unfold. Both old and new dominated the 61st Primetime Emmys. It was a big surprise when AMC's "Mad Men" won for the second year in a row in the drama series category and "30 Rock" won for the third consecutive year for comedy series category. Glenn Close got the lead actress award for FX's "Damages" and Bryan Cranston for AMC's "Breaking Bad" for the 2nd consecutive year. These two awards came as real shocks. There were big winners like PBS' "Little Dorrit", with seven awards, HBO's "Grey Gardens", which took six and NBC's "30 Rock", which won five. There were 20 various shows that took home the 28 Emmys handed out on the Sunday. The three hour long show was hosted by Neil Patrick Harris. He spiked jokes in between the musical n.... »

Tina Fey's 30 Rock and hit U.S. TV series Mad Men stole the show at the 61st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, receiving top honours at Sunday's event.
30 Rock creator Fey and co-stars Alec Baldwin and Tracy Morgan claimed their third consecutive trophy for Outstanding Comedy Series, while Mad Men was a repeat winner for Outstanding Drama Series.
Fey's series was an Emmy favourite, landing a whopping 22 nominations in 2009 after stealing the show at last year's ceremony.
Baldwin defended his title as the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy, although Fey failed to secure a second win for Outstanding Lead Actress after United States Of Tara's Toni Collette took home the prize.
The funnywoman later redeemed herself after 30 Rock beat out Entourage, Family Guy, Flight of the Conchords, How I Met Your Mother and The Office to reclaim the prize for Outstanding Comedy Series.
Thanking her patient cast and crew, Fey said: "That was a real nail biter... I want to thank the family and loved ones of all the people who work on the show... for almost four years now."
Another repeat winner, actress Glenn Close, claimed victory for her lead role on TV drama Damages for the second year running.
Meanwhile, veteran actress Jessica Lange was gracious after her name was called for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie for her role in TV movie Grey Gardens.
The 60 year old praised co-star Drew Barrymore for helping to reignite her career: "This part was a gift and they don't come around that often for me anymore... and above all (I thank) the other half, Drew Barrymore, for her extraordinary talent, for her brilliance, for her determination."
The spectacular ceremony, held at Los Angeles' Nokia Theater, also featured a performance from Sarah McLachlan, who paid tribute to recently deceased entertainers with a rendition of her ballad I Will Remember You.
This year's show was hosted by How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris, who opened with a song and dance number. Harris ended his musical routine with a light-hearted jab at MTV Video Music Award stage invader Kanye West, warning nominees to keep an eye on celebrities looking to crash their acceptance speeches.
Harris joked, "Here's hoping Kanye West likes 30 Rock."

So another year has passed and its time for another round of awards for the people who make the television shows we like to watch.
Television is interesting these days. Never before have we seen such great, creative output. Never before have we been subjected to such drivel. It all gets paraded before us tonight, as we watch the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards (handed out, it should be noted, by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences) on CBS, CTV in Canada.

Interesting that the Emmys chose to introduce the 2009 edition of the Primetime awards by harkening back to the early days of television. Especially as the business of television has never been closer to a complete collapse. Oh, announcer who is trying so hard to sound like a TV host from the '50s. You don't sound at all like you're a three pack-a-day smoker.
