Bea Kristi first caught the world’s attention releasing bedroom tunes that became viral hits, particularly her epochal 2019 blast of indie-rock hero worship “I Wish I Was Stephen Malkmus.” Her 2021 debut as Beabadoobee, Fake It Flowers, showed she could be and do many things, from a Hole-style angst merchant to a dream-pop charmer to a clever genre-splicer who could shift from folk to prog in one gesture and call that gesture “Emo Song.” Kristi used her gift for mutating old songs as a springboard to process her at times painful,...

Vintage Festival has moved to be a guest of Wilderness Festival for 2012. Lower-than-expected ticket sales have forced the cancellation of the event, which was due to host performances from Chic ft Nile Rodgers, Saint Etienne, The Damned and others. Ticketholders for the July 13-15 festival will be able to claim a refund from the point of purchase or instead exchange their ticket for Wilderness, which takes place in Oxfordshire from August 10-12. St Etienne cohort Paul Kelly turns in a elegant document of 90s indie enigma Lawrence and his fame cravings
Paul Kelly, responsible for most of Saint Etienne's visual output, – such as the River Lea film What Have You Done Today Mervyn Day? and Festival Hall doco This Is Tomorrow – trains his elegant camerawork on another cult music act: the enigmatic (and surname-free) Lawrence, frontman of Felt and Denim. Held in some awe as the lost genius of 80s/90s indie, he's engagingly frank about his fame cravings – "The day I don't have to go on the tube any more will be the day I fucking celebrate" – as he battles to get new band Go Kart Mozart off the ground. But unless you already worship at the altar of Lawrence, there's not much concession made to you; it feels very much for devotees only.

Admired actor with an instinctive presence and austere looks
One of the greatest performances in the history of film was given by Claude Laydu, in the title role of Robert Bresson's Journal d'un Curé de Campagne (Diary of a Country Priest, 1951). As a young, sickly priest unable to resolve the problems of his small parish, and assailed by self-doubt, Laydu, who has died aged 84, brought his own spirituality, instinctive presence and intense ascetic looks to the role. His portrayal prompted Jean Tulard to write in his Dictionary of Film that "no other actor deserves to go to heaven as much as Laydu".
This is even more remarkable given that Bresson declared that "Art is transformation. Acting can only get in the way", and that he called his actors "models" whom he trained to remove all traces of theatricality and to speak in a monotonic manner. Bresson chose the 23-year-old from among many candidates,...
