Update Sunday October 11:
I spoke to Steve Mikulan today, who told me that he'd only recently received a gift from his bosses to mark his landmark 25 years at the L.A. Weekly. I told him he'd only caught the same disease that's afflicting far too many good journalists these days. He replied that he'd seen so many other layoffs that he thought he'd been innoculated.
Earlier:
Kevin Roderick and Marc Cooper bring us up to date on the ongoing goings-on at the L.A. Weekly, which I used to read with great joy as a source for smart, investigative journalism th...

Programming note: I'll be debating the state of popular culture with fellow journalists and authors Chris Hedges and Marc Cooper on Sunday afternoon at the home of Zuade Kaufman, the publisher of Truthdig.com. The event is titled, "Pop Culture, Politics and the Price of Mass Distraction," and it should be lively - apparently I'm considered the right-winger in the room.
Anyway, the event is open to the public but there's a $75 fee for tickets. It is a fundraiser for the worthy cause of supporting Truthdig.com, which does hard-hitting investigative ...

The pattern is, essentially, legacy media (read 'old media') getting defensive and weepy over their d...
