On Sunday evening, “The X-Factor” completed the first “judges’ homes” cycle of the competition as the remaining 16 hopefuls performed songs for their future mentors. Simon Cowell was assigned The Girls (under 30), L.A. Reid The Boys (under 30), Paula Abdul The Groups, and Nicole Scherzinger The Over 30s.
Jazzlyn Little was first to perform among The Girls, and it was obvious that the 16-year-old was nervous as she went out to perform for Cowell. Nevertheless, she did a solid rendition of...

The second half of the final 32 "X Factor" acts performed in front of the judges at their respective homes on Sunday's episode, vying for spots in the top 16. Those 16 will compete in the show's live episodes and ultimately battle it out for a $5 million recording contract.
The judges were joined by celebrity consultants for this round. Rihanna partnered with L.A. Reid at his home in the Hamptons to evaluate the boys; Pharrell Williams helped Paula Abdul critique the groups in Santa Barbara, California; and Enrique Iglesias assisted Nicole Scherzinger while she evaluated the over-30s at her home in Malibu, California. Over in France, Simon Cowell was joined by a team of industry professionals to assess the girls after his original co-judging choice, Mariah Carey,...

In comparison to other performance-based shows like “America’s Got Talent” or even its predecessor on Fox, “American Idol,” the competition on “The X-Factor” is set up in an unusual format. While all of the contestants are required to audition alone at various stages of the competition, the show’s producers group them together for rehearsals, and occasionally for performances, which at this early point in the season makes it extraordinarily difficult to remember each of them, if you...

This just in: At 23 years of age, Whitney Houston’s mawkish 1988 ballad “One Moment in Time” has apparently reclaimed its power as an un-ironic, soul-stirring anthem that can accompany small-screen images of joy, triumph, and the overcoming of obstacles. How else to explain the melismatic octave changes and lyrics about “racing with destiny” that accompanied The X Factor‘s announcement of the Top 8 contestants in the “geriatric” quarter of its search for America’s next great singing sensation?
All of this, of course, is just a long-winded way of saying that as the octet of octogenarians (okay, that burrito slinger...

Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, La Reid and Nicole Scherzinger have been assigned their mentoring categories on The X Factor USA. The judges, who were earlier tasked with choosing 32 singers to progress to the Judges' Houses stage of the competition, learned which group they will work with for the remainder of the season during Thursday night's broadcast. First to learn her category was Scherzinger, who will mentor the Over 30s. The eight acts who will work to impress the Pussycat Dolls singer in the hopes of making it to the live shows are Elaine Gibbs, Tiger Budbill, Leroy Bell, James Kenney, Josh Krajcik, Christa Collins, Dexter Haygood and Stacey Francis. Abdul was then given the Groups, a task which she earlier confessed would be a tall order for whichever panelist was to take it on. She will be forced to pick between (more)...

It's Boot Camp day 2 for "The X Factor" - the Top 32 are revealed, plus each category is assigned a judge. Exciting stuff.
More group time:
The Chris Rene-Brennin Hunt group gets "What's Going On" by the late, great Marvin Gaye. Awesome song for these voices, I predict - and then they do. It's very good. Matthew Johnson is a great one we haven't really seen before. Chris Rene doesn't sound as good as he did on his audition song. The Country group gets "I Won't Let Go" and it's a great piece for every single member. Hannah Bethel is a stand out, as are Thomas Wells and Tim Cifers. They all do very well. The Emma Henry group (we've seen her on "Idol," I think) gets "Chasing Cars" and the guy who leads it off is not good. Hannah Jackson has an interesting voice, very torn on her. Emma is another weird one.

After a relatively sane four audition episodes, "X Factor" got down to business on Thursday night (October 6), when the second evening of boot camp helped cull the herd down to the semifinal contender class.
While some early favorites such as Siameze Floyd and adorable not-yet couple McKenna and Brock cracked under the pressure, others, including Chris Rene, Josh Krajcik and cutie brother act the Brewer Boys, survived the group competition and punched their ticket to the next round.
The two-night boot camp episode reduced the 162 contenders to 32, with eight in each of the four categories: boys, girls, over-30s and groups. After 62 acts were lopped at the top of Wednesday night's show, half of the remaining singers were put into groups that got help from vocal coaches,...
