[TV] Brotherhood: The Final Season

7 October 2009 8:00 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

The pedestrian title of Brotherhood calls to mind a show trying to be tough, and failing miserably. The story of the Caffee brothers, one in city hall and one in organized crime, also definitely sounds like a premise set up for little else than the express purpose of maximizing your TV’s badass quotient. But this all ends up to the show’s advantage. Focusing on quiet moments, small relationships, and an unmannered depiction of the day to day problems of community, work and family, Brotherhood presents an unexpectedly intimate world for high-concept TV.

Make no mistake, there is sex and violence—it’s just not cavalier or slick. Their lives are realized enough that when one character blows away a guy in a bar for being an obstinate Yankee fan, it doesn’t feel many steps away from when another buys the strawberry swirl cake instead of plain strawberry for her bother-in-law’s birthday. »

Auto of the week: Ford V8 from Public Enemies

7 July 2009 4:43 AM, PDT | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

Asked by lady love Billie Frechette (played by Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard) about himself, bank robber John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) smartly replies: “I like baseball, movies, good clothes, fast cars… and you. What else you need to know?” Indeed, that pretty much covers it in Public Enemies, the new Michael Mann drama focussing on the last 18 months in the life of the notorious 1930s criminal. And for the car enthusiast there are plenty of these “fast cars” to feast your eyes on, between 1,000 and 1,500 according to the production team, though we’ve singled out our favourite here at Boxwish for our weekly auto spot – the Ford V8 used by Depp’s Dillinger upon escaping from the Lake County Jail.

The jail, an extension to the home of local enforcer, Sheriff Lillian Holley (Lili Taylor) doesn’t hold Dillinger for long and he makes his escape in the Ford V8 belonging to the Sheriff. »

'Public Enemies'

1 July 2009 9:20 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

All the elements for an Oscar-winning epic are present in Public Enemies. Oscar-nominated directed Michael Mann? Check. Prestigious cast led by Johnny Depp and Christian Bale? Check. Biopic with a flawlessly rendered historical setting? Check. However, Mann’s drama about notorious gangster John Dillinger fails to use all it has in its impressive arsenal to move beyond its B-movie roots and become a truly great, or even a very good, film.

Johnny Depp has played antiheroes before, most famously as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean and its sequels, but his has rarely shown the hard edge occasionally on display in Public Enemies. Dillinger was a charmer, a man seemingly as concerned with his image and celebrity as the take from his heists, but Depp doesn’t hesitate to show the gangster’s colder side that audiences witness from the first few moments of the film.

Johnny Depp’s ‘Public Enemies’ Delivers Bona Fide Chicago Powerhouse

1 July 2009 2:53 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Was John Dillinger an Adolf Hitler-level criminal mastermind or a modern-day Robin Hood superman? In the authentic reality portrayed by the god-like Johnny Depp in the Chicago-filmed “Public Enemies,” he’s a little bit of both for blockbuster filmmaker Michael Mann.

Unfortunately, Depp’s nemesis – special agent Melvin Purvis as played by “The Dark Knight” mainstay Christian Bale – falls flat. Bale rolls through the motions with a monotone and monotonous role that needed the tension of a World War conflict rather than a rubber band.

Rating: 4.0/5.0 The French actress Marion Cotillard, on the other hand, delivers yet another intoxicating performance as Billie Frechette this time in a supporting role. We’re reminded why she ever-so-definitely deserved her 2008 Oscar for so absolutely embodying Edith Piaf in 2007’s “La Vie en Rose”.

Leelee Sobieski is thrown in toward the end as the downplayed character Polly Hamilton in a relatively wasted and unnecessary cameo. »

'Public Enemies': Bullet Time, By Kurt Loder

Johnny Depp brings John Dillinger back, but not entirely alive.

Johnny Depp in "Public Enemies"

John Dillinger's reign as America's most-wanted bank robber (or one of them) only spanned 10 months — from the fall of 1933, when he pulled his first such heist, to the summer of 1934, when federal agents shot him down in front of Chicago's Biograph Theater. Still, Dillinger has proved to be a durable celebrity desperado. Along with such fellow bank-job specialists as Clyde Barrow, Pretty Boy Floyd and Baby Face Nelson (all of whom came to a bloody end the same year Dillinger did), he continues to embody the "public enemy" years of the Great Depression, when heartland gangsters became figures of public fascination by smiting the hated banks and repeatedly eluding the little-loved coppers who pursued them.

Dillinger's brief career has been the subject of several films. The latest is director Michael Mann's "Public Enemies, »

Plot:

Led by J. Edgar Hoover (Crudup), the Feds put Melvin Purvis (Bale) in charge of trying to take down American’s public enemy No. 1, gangster John Dillinger (Depp), during a booming crime wave in the 1930s.

Who’s It For?

Most people will be content seeing Depp look good in some classic suits. For the rest of us, this is a great exploration of good and evil (and all the levels of gray). Plus, these are shoot-outs you can feel thanks to Mann’s direction.

Expectations: I knew, as do most, the story of John Dillinger, but I’ll keep most of that in the Plot Spoilers section. Anything with Mann, Depp and Bale … I expect good things. »

Brotherhood: Showtime TV Show Is Really Over, No Season Four

30 June 2009 7:21 AM, PDT | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

We've suspected the bad news for months but now, it's been confirmed that the Brotherhood series has indeed been cancelled by Showtime.

Brotherhood revolves around the lives of two brothers in an Irish-American neighborhood in Rhode Island. Tommy Caffee (Jason Clarke) is a family man and local politician while his brother Michael (Jason Isaacs) is a professional criminal who's involved with the Irish mob. Others in the cast of this gritty drama include Kevin Chapman, Annabeth Gish, Fiona C. Erickson, Brian Scannell, Kerry O'Malley, Fionnula Flanagan, Madison Garland, Billy Smith, Frank Ridley, Matt Servitto, Ethan Embry, Brian F. O'Byrne, Tina Benko, and John Fiore.

The series debuted on Showtime on July 9, 2006 and, despite some very positive reviews, Brotherhood didn't attract a lot of viewers; just 450,000. Showtime nevertheless renewed the show for a second season -- albeit one made up of only 10 episodes. They started airing in September of 2007 and the »

Depp And Bale Bring Gangster Mystique To 'Public Enemies' Premiere

Stars analyze their fascination with notorious outlaws on the red carpet.

By Larry Carroll

Westwood, California — Both began their careers in the mid-'80s with instant classics ("Empire of the Sun," "A Nightmare on Elm Street"), matured as actors with critically acclaimed roles in the '90s ("Ed Wood," "American Psycho") and broke through with iconic characters in recent years (the "Pirates" and "Batman" films). Both possess the rare quality of making women want them and men want to be like them — and the even rarer skill of being indie-minded actors who lose no credibility when they delve into blockbuster territory.

And on Tuesday evening, the remarkably similar career trajectories of Johnny Depp and Christian Bale converged on a red carpet full of gals, guns and gangsters at the premiere of "Public Enemies."
