Mikel’s Full Length Debut Album Purgatory, Set For Release February 3, Also Includes His Recent Top 50 Billboard Track “I Hope It Hurts”
Los Angeles, Jan. 13, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Capping a prolific run of more than 10 popular streaming singles since 2017, Johnnie Mikel gears up for the February 3 drop of his highly anticipated full length debut Purgatory with his latest track “Fallen Angel,” an infectious, fiery and funked out power ballad co-written with Lauren Christy, best known for her trailblazing work with the seven-time Grammy winning songwriting and production team The Matrix.
“I came to Lauren with the title and concept, and we wrote the song fairly quickly,” says Mikel, who released his debut single “Come With Me” in 2017. “It’s kind of a ‘good girl gone bad’ story about someone that’s not the best for you. We wanted to make the song very funky and sexy, so the production matches that. I love the swampy,...

Lauren Christy has had a hand in some of the biggest hits of the past 20 years. As a songwriter and producer, she’s made a living co-writing hits like Avril Lavigne’s “Sk8ter Boi,” “Complicated” and “I’m With You” alongside Jason Mraz’s breakout single “The Remedy (I Won’t Worry),” and tracks for Liz Phair and Britney Spears.
Even with her success, Christy knows that banking on a career in the music industry has always been a gamble. But as revenue streams have changed over the past decade,...

The first (and still best) winner of American Idol, Kelly Clarkson has undeniably powerful pipes. Unfortunately, they’re too often used to deliver songs that aren’t as invigorating as her vocals. Notable exceptions have included “Since U Been Gone,” “Behind These Hazel Eyes,” and “My Life Would Suck Without You”—all hits handled by the production dream team of Dr. Luke and Max Martin. Neither of those producers can be found on Clarkson’s fifth album, Stronger; instead, Rodney Jerkins, Lauren Christy, and Andre Lindal do their best to conjure up the memory of “Since U Been Gone” on ...

Kelly Clarkson's new material has been described as "crazy rock-pop" by a producer. Hitmaker Rodney Jerkins, who has previously worked with Michael Jackson, Lady GaGa and Britney Spears, revealed that he produced a track for the singer's LP that he is "confident" will make the final cut. Asked if he had worked on Clarkson's album, he told The Hollywood Reporter: "A song called 'I Forgive You' that me and Lauren Christy did that's just crazy pop-rock. "The first person who came into my head to do it was Kelly Clarkson. So I sent it immediately and got a response that night. (more)...

Before there was Justin Bieber, there was another teenager from Canada who released a huge debut, turned heads and created a seismic shift in pop music. On this day in 2002, 17-year-old Avril Lavigne released her debut album Let Go, which brought together elements of sugary teen pop, anthemic arena rock and a healthy dose of punk style and attitude.
Lavigne first hit it big with the gigantic single "Complicated," a pop-punk power ballad that came bundled with a now-iconic video that laid out everything that Lavigne was back in '02: There was a mall, some skateboarding, general teenage mayhem and Lavigne's trademark tank top and neck tie combination. "Complicated" was a revelation, as even though it was as produced as the rest of the pop music on the radio, it had a fresh lack of self-consciousness and a delightfully snotty edge.
Let Go also represented the first big breakthrough for Scott Spock,...

Kris Allen becomes media headline soon after being crowned as the winner of "American Idol" season eight on May 20 and beating down judges' favorite Adam Lambert. Following his victory in the reality singing competition, he was signed to 19 Entertainment/Jive Records to release a solo studio album.
Prior to hitting studio for his solo debut effort, Kris has a winning song called "No Boundaries". The single has been available for digital purchase one day after the Idol finale result show and has climbed to number 11 on Billboard Hot 100.
While many acclaimed producers such as Howard Benson and Lauren Christy have stepped out offering which direction Kris should take for his new record, Kris himself explains that the only thing he wants to do "is just be respected in the music industry." He also hopes to "turn [his Idol win] into a good thing: Pressure to make good music and get out there and work hard.

Let's fend off the nuclear attacks against Kris Allen now that he blasted Adam Lambert in the "American Idol" battle. Whether he survives and thrives ahead with a successful music career — winning Grammys and achieving the sales and critical respect he craves — may be discerned perhaps by observing how similar artists have fared so far. According to the posters in The Envelope's forums, the new "American Idol" winner fits the chiseled profiles of John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Rob Thomas and Jack Johnson. Not only have they all reaped mega-sales, but, in terms of earning industry respect, they'll all been nominated in the pop categories at the Grammys. Mayer and Thomas won. Mraz was also nominated for one of the top four prizes, best song ("I'm Yours"), a laurel John Mayer claimed for "Daughters." Thomas nabbed one of the other top Grammy trophies: best record ("Smooth," shared with Santana). Lauren Christy,...

Following Kris Allen's victory in "American Idol" season eight, there are many talks on the street about what kind of album he should be recording, and several powerhouse producers have come out, offering their thought on that matter. Lauren Christy says he has the look and voice to become a great pop singer, while Howard Benson advices him to make "a real active rock record."
"Kris is a heartthrob for the girls and has the looks and voice to carry a great pop career," Lauren who is the member of production team The Matrix tells MTV. "You could liken him to Nick Lachey or Adam Levine from Maroon 5."
Lauren is also intrigued by the idea of Kris going country. However, for what the 23-year-old singer should not do for his first post-Idol effort, Lauren claims that he "needs to avoid trying to be rock and songs that are too rangy for him.

The lights on the "American Idol" stage have gone dark. Season-eight champ Kris Allen shall be judged no more ... at least for a while. When his debut album arrives at some point in the future, the fair-minded appraisals and vicious condemnations will begin anew.
The decision for Allen and his label will be what type of album he records. Will he stick to the acoustic guitar, singer/songwriter persona he seemed to favor during the show? Will he go in a country direction, as indicated by Wednesday night's performance alongside Keith Urban? What's the best bet to ensure Allen has a long, lucrative career?
