In this shattering variation on “The Monkey’s Paw,” grief-stricken suburban parents (Academy Award nominees John Marley of The Godfather and Lynn Carlin of Faces) refuse to accept the news that their son Andy (Richard Backus) has been killed in Vietnam. But when Andy returns home soon after, something may be horribly wrong: Andy is alive and well…or is he? Produced and directed by Bob Clark (Black Christmas) and written by Alan Ormsby (Deranged), Deathdream was one of the very first films to confront the domestic ravages of the Vietnam War and remains one of the most chilling horror films of all time.

Christmas movies are one of the most beloved genres in cinema history with every film fan having their own select favorite that they watch and rewatch every year. However, while the genre is treasured, the Oscars haven’t rewarded it as much as you might think or hope. There are several movies, however, that have found their way into Oscars lineups. We’ve detailed just five of those Christmas movies that have managed Oscar nominations or wins.
By the way, “The Apartment” is not included on this list (but might be in a future article). The Billy Wilder movie won five Academy Awards including Best Picture (1961) but there seems to be debate around whether it actually qualifies as a Christmas movie or not. It’s set during the holiday period, but some feel that isn’t enough for it to be an out-and-out Christmas movie. Perhaps that’s one for our forums.

While you can always rely on Hallmark and other channels to provide a frankly overwhelming number of new Christmas movies each year, the streaming services have all been slower to crank out their own Yuletide romcoms and North Pole-centric misadventures. This year there are a solid half-dozen options among four streamers, starring plenty of familiar faces going through the usual holiday hijinks in suburbia: Christmas cards, delayed toy delivery, body swaps. If you’ve seen it before, you can expect it again with pretty paper and a bow!
I’m gonna warn you now though, there are no bonafide modern classics in this year’s batch, but neither are they all lumps of coal. The ones that tackle the debate of Santa’s existence do so in ways unique from one another, and the movies on this list that are most successful are the ones that get super myopic about...

Pressman Film is a production company that was founded by Ed Pressman, a prolific producer of over 90 films, including the likes of Wall Street, American Psycho, and The Crow. Sadly, Pressman passed away earlier this year at the age of 79. Now his son Sam Pressman is the CEO of Pressman Film, which recently rebooted The Crow – and landed an eight-figure domestic distribution deal for the film with Lionsgate. Moving forward, the company is working with Antoine Fuqua on a project called The Street, which was written by Goodfellas‘ Nicholas Pileggi, and planning an adaptation of the 1975 Edward Abbey novel The Monkey Wrench Gang, which will be directed by Catfish‘s Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman. They’re also trying to figure out how they can exploit titles in the Pressman Film library… and in a recent article, Deadline mentions that endeavor might involve remakes of the 1980 holiday horror film Christmas Evil...

As The Expendables 4, the final entry of the franchise whose Usp was assembling yesteryear’s action movie icons together, releases worldwide this week, the burning question regarding its relevancy arises. To be honest, even die-hard fans of the series didn’t expect the release of yet another sequel after the completion of the trilogy, and considering how much production trouble this one has gone through, there was always a warning sign looming over its future. Adding to its misery was the gap between the previous movie and the latest one being nine years—a rather long period in an ever-evolving pop culture landscape that is bombarded with content every day. There was still an off chance for The Expendables 4 to prove the naysayers wrong, concluding the saga in a memorable manner, but unfortunately that didn’t come to pass.

What makes The Expendables franchise compelling and entertaining, and vitally – long-lasting – is its unapologetic silliness. It has always been, for use of a better word (though get used to this one during this review), silly. Lots of inane action sequences, throwaway one-liners, and ageing superstars that we hold dear to our hearts, making for a film that is ripe with nostalgia, and infected with testosterone. But this latest entry into the series, the fourth, in fact – lacks something valuable: it’s not quite silly enough. To keep going, to find new ways to entertain audiences and ensure the fanbase keep wanting more, you have to embrace the absurd. Just look at the Fast & Furious franchise. They’re racing cars in space. Now that’s silly.

The 80s era was memorable for a lot of things, but especially for the rise of iconic action heroes like Rambo, Dutch, Ripley, Sarah Conner, and John McClane, to name a few, portrayed by legendary actors who forever changed the landscape of the genre. Their screen presence, insistence on the portrayal of physicality in action sequences, and larger-than-life appearance have captivated generations of fans ever since—and led to the franchise boom in the first place. Long before studio-wide superhero crossovers took over Hollywood, it was a dream of every action movie fan to see their favorite stars sharing the screen together, and Sylvester Stallone, an action legend himself, fulfilled the dream by creating The Expendables franchise. The franchise is now three movies strong, and after a prolonged nine-year gap, the fourth part is about to crush theaters worldwide this weekend.

Major spoilers for "Expend4bles" follow.
Ever since "The Expendables" was released in 2010, the identity and tone of the franchise has been heavily in question. That first film seemed to want to have things both ways, presenting the trials and tribulations of the (very fictional) titular team of mercenaries while metatextually commenting on (and piggybacking off of) the action stars playing them. Put another way, it's as if the crossover formula seen in Marvel's "The Avengers" franchise was reversed: the coming together of the film's stars are the big draw, while the characters are (at least initially) not well known.
While 2012's "The Expendables 2" leaned far more into the meta aspects of people like Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Chuck Norris showing up in the same film, 2014's "The Expendables 3" attempted to find a similar balance to the first film, establishing its characters in their own right while still...

The first thing you need to know about “Expendables 4” is that its studio somehow made the grating decision to fashion its title as “Expend4ble.” It’s a needless spelling challenge for a dull and vulgar flick with a lot of empty-calories muscle, but little-to-no skill or fun to spare. The second thing you need to know is, that insertion of “4” is, unfortunately, just about the most clever thing the fourth installment of this star-studded action series has to offer.
There is always a lot of touchiness out there in defense of such movies, usually from those who guard one’s right to “shut one’s brain off and just enjoy.” But as the “John Wick” franchise and the entirety of the “Mission: Impossible” series continue to prove time and time again, there is indeed a stylish and cinematic way to pull off fun and thoroughly entertaining action fare...

It's time to start getting in the Christmas spirit - at least, according to the Hallmark Channel, which released its full slate of holiday movies on Sept. 19. This year's crop of films features a number of new faces and fresh plots to immerse you in the scent of pine trees and the sound of Christmas carols, as well as some relatively familiar faces, such as John Travolta's sister Ellen, who stars in "Haul Out the Holly: Lit Up."
Hallmark will begin airing its holiday movies on Oct. 20, starting with "Checkin' It Twice," a romance that follows a real estate agent who falls in love with a hockey player. The 40 films will air on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 8 p.m. Et, with additional features also airing every Thursday on the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries channel, with a few exceptions. "The Expendables" franchise has — smartly — allowed its titular roster of tough, never-say-die mercenaries to include women, as demonstrated by 2014's "The Expendables 3" adding Ronda Rousey to the crew and the upcoming "Expend4bles" (type that five times fast) bringing in Megan Fox and Levy Tran.
However, while making the first "Expendables" back in 2010, that wasn't quite the case. That film only features two female characters: Lacy (Charisma Carpenter), the cheating girlfriend of Jason Statham's Lee Christmas, and Sandra (Giselle Itié), the daughter of a South American dictator who wants to use the Expendables to help overthrow her father and his ex-CIA puppet master, Munroe (Eric Roberts).
Although Sandra is an integral part of the film, she's no trained mercenary, and ends up being captured by the bad guys and tortured for information. It must've been difficult for the Brazilian actress to deal with the atmosphere of testosterone-fueled competition surrounding her,...

Sometimes, this job can give you the honor and privilege of drawing attention to all kinds of underseen gems from the wide breadth of cinema that the world has to offer. Other times, you end up writing about a newly-announced schlock-fest of a movie described as, essentially, "John Wick" meets "A Christmas Carol." In either case, it's an undeniable win-win for me, your local /Film writer who absolutely lives for chaos.

Ray Donovan star Liev Schreiber is getting locked and loaded for a holiday-themed action movie from Gangs of London director Xavier Gens called The Guns of Christmas Past. Deadline says Schreiber is negotiating for the lead role in Gens’s genre mash-up, described as “A Christmas Carol meets John Wick.”
The story revolves around Ebb, a former hitman for the mob who emerges from the shadows when his best friend gets killed. Ebb plans to infiltrate the enemy’s compound to inflict revenge, but the past, present, and future ghosts haunt him throughout the night to ruin his plans. Gens directs from a script by Andrew Hilton, with Navid McIlhargey and Erik Olsen producing.
I’m sorry, what? This movie sounds wacky! It’s like something Frank Cross from Scrooged would air on Ibc Television on Christmas Eve. After 2022’s Violent Night, starring David Habour, outlandish Christmas movies are the new holiday hotness.
