“Kung Fu Girl”, also known as “None but the Brave”, was originally released back in 1973 as a vehicle for Cheng Pei Pei, the former Shaw Brothers martial arts queen, who had been lured back to Hong Kong by Golden Harvest after apparently giving up her career and moving to the Us. Having starred in the likes of “Come Drink with Me”, “Golden Swallow” and “The Lady Hermit”, she had chosen to retire at the very top of her profession, and indeed the film marked her second last appearance for almost a decade before she gradually moved back to the genre in the 1980s and 1990s, culminating in her major comeback role in Ang Lee’s 2000 blockbuster “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”. “Kung Fu Girl” was directed by Lo Wei, a frequent helmer for Golden Harvest who was also responsible for Bruce Lee’s classic “Fist of Fury”. I’m going to double dip here because it would appear that director Tao Ming Xi is a terribly prolific and busy filmmaker. The first clip you’ll see after the break is a fight montage from a kung fu film he has just premiered in Bejing. It is called Taishan Kung Fu and it is set to expand throughout the mainland provinces.
The film showcases Mt Tai’s rare kung fu known as Stone Skill, and apart from scintillating martial arts scenes, it explores the culture of Mt Tai. Taishan Kung Fu is Tai Ming Xi’s fourth film as a director, with Huang Guan Bao as the martial arts director. The film stars Wu Yue, Wei Yu Hai, Xu Huan Huan, Zhao Pei, Cheng Pei Pei, Wang Fei Hong. Both Tao Ming Xi and Wei Yu Hai are members of Sammo Hung Stunt Team. The film is about »

It’s been somewhat quiet on the Singapore front, but here’s something that should interest you Twitch folks!
Some years ago a group of friends and I dabbled with short film making, plunging ourselves headlong into an insane 48 hour competition. That same competition had yielded Nicholas Chee and Randy Ang’s short film which clinched top honours, and they had gone on to make the feature film Becoming Royston. Chai Yee-wei was one of the participants in that very same contest, and a few award winning shorts later, look where he is today as well, with a feature film under his belt too, waiting for a 3rd quarter release this year. As for my friends and I, well, erm, that’s another story for another day…
I’ve followed Yee-wei’s shorts film in recent years, having seen them either online at competition websites, or at local film festivals. »

Kill Bill star and Kung Fu legend David Carradine returns to the small screen in two feature length productions directed by Philip Spink, forgive the pun but Kung Fu fanatics will probably get a real kick out of the 72 year olds return to martial arts television, the rest of the world will just have to suffer. The show reunites Carradine with Daryl Hannah, not to mention a fine array of Eastern talent. Most notably Pei-pei Cheng of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon fame and the welcome return of Anya (Naked Weapon), after a near fatal car accident which has left her scarred for life. Though it has to be said the scars are barely visible now and she still looks absolutely stunning. Welcome back Anya. »

(Horrible) Street Fighter movie poster
It surprises me just how much that poster doesn’t work…
I can see what they’re going for - trying to be a bit different (edgier, perhaps?) than other films in the genre have been in the past, but it just looks cheesy and kind of silly (although it’s certainly better than the terrible first poster). To be honest it took me a few seconds to even notice there were two guys fighting on it, »
