Paul Dano, Alicia Vikander, Jude Law, Zach Galifianakis and Tom Sturridge team up in Olivier Assayas’ political thriller “The Wizard of the Kremlin”, based on Giuliano da Empoli’s bestseller by the same name.
Produced by Olivier Delbosc’s banner Curiosa Films and Gaumont – who last partnered on Cannes prizewinning “The Taste of Things” — “The Wizard of the Kremlin” is one of the hottest packages launching at the Cannes Film Market where Alexis Cassanet, Gaumont’s EVP international sales and distribution, is kicking off pre-sales.
“The Wizard of the Kremlin” is co-written by Assayas and Emmanuel Carrère, whose novel “Limonov” has been adapted for the big screen by Kirill Serebrennikov and will premiere in official selection at Cannes.
The story opens in Russia, in the early 1990’s, in the aftermath of the Ussr’s collapse. In a new world that promises freedom and flirts with chaos, a young artist-turned-tv producer,...

Last month, Texas Congressman Joaquin Castro put out a call to the public, asking people to send ideas for music by Latin artists to submit to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry. It’s part of a years-long effort on Castro’s part to get more Latin art preserved within the Library of Congress and to increase Latino representation across media and pop culture.
The National Recording Registry is made up of works considered “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” or that “inform or reflect life in the United States.

Expanded to four full days, Madrid’s Iberseries & Platino Industria, a joint venture of the Fundación Secuoya and Egeda, Spain’s large rights collection society, opens its doors for its third edition on Tuesday Oct. 3, running all week at Madrid’s Matadero.
I & IP is a market, thanks to its Iberscreenings showcase, and ever more a co-pro forum as well as a massive financing emporium with 149 (sic) projects being pitched behind closed doors at Platforms, Producers Pitch sessions.
The event takes place post-peak TV, however, with a new sense of realism and calculation flooding the world’s TV and film industries. A now robust conference strand looks set to debate key issues and market trends.
Tow weeks out from the event, Variety sat down with Iberseries director Samuel Castro of the Grupo Secuoya and Adriana Castillo, who heads up Egeda’s office in Mexico, to check out their take on...

There were many significant Latino artists who shaped the soundtrack of Congressman Joaquin Castro’s childhood when he was growing up in San Antonio, Texas. As a kid, his mother loved Joan Baez; Castro remembers that she would play the folk singer’s 1975 Diamonds and Rust album over and over around the house. He also recalls liking a lot of the Tex-Mex fusion sounds pioneered by the Texas Tornados and Freddy Fender, and he’d even listen to Ricky Martin’s late Nineties pop songs once in a while.

A scrappy urban tale of misspent young adulthood, Olmo Schnabel’s “Pet Shop Days” evokes the blown-out, stolen-shot 16mm character studies of 1990s independent cinema, as well as the bohemian oeuvre of painter and filmmaker Julian Schnabel, his father. This isn’t attributable merely to the fact that the younger Schnabel includes a scene in which his characters watch Julian’s 1996 “Basquiat,” whose themes and aloof tone — not to mention the events of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s actual life — would seem an obvious inspiration for his first feature. But in a contemporary absence of true New York stories told by filmmakers with seemingly more moxie than money, newcomer Schnabel distinguishes himself with a debut that feels tactile, real and suitably off-putting as he attempts to capture the sensibilities (if not always common sense) of twentysomethings.

With six feature credits in the last decade, Pablo Larraín is among the most prolific filmmakers working today, but he returns to the Lido this week with a new proposition.
El Conde, his latest feature, an inventive black-and-white satire of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, is his first film for a streamer. Larraín co-wrote and directed the film, which debuts in Competition at Venice this evening for Netflix.
“I’m happy because this movie is going to be in a lot of living rooms. It’s beautiful,” Larraín said of his work with the streamer.

Starring his regular on-screen collaborators like Alfredo Castro and Amparo Noguera, El Conde is set in a parallel universe where fascist Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet exists as a vampire. After being ousted from power, Pinochet is now hidden in a ruined mansion on the cold southern tip of the continent.

“What would happen if five of America’s top 11 most-beloved talk show hosts all talked on top of each other for an hour? You’re about to find out,” said Jimmy Kimmel in the opening of Strike Force Five, a podcast from the major late-night hosts.
Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers and John Oliver have launched the first episode of the Spotify podcast, which was named after their text chain.
It was an hour of random stories and jokes about the strike including how Stephen Colbert’s mother dated a Nicaraguan dictator, lawsuits involving their shows (hello Viacom and Google), how many of the hosts wanted to join the clergy and how Colbert and Kimmel were both in the running to be the announcer for Magic Johnson’s 1998 talkshow The Magic Hour.
“Would it be fair to say that in 2008 the hosts didn’t get along quite as well as we do?...
