“Some called him the godfather of underground film.” “My guest tonight is Jonas Mekas, who was first of all a poet before he was a filmmaker.” “His name is Jonas Mekas, a man who I think more than almost anybody in the world epitomizes the meaning and significance of independent filmmaking.”
Those are some of the TV news voiceover soundbites that open Kd Davison’s documentary about the great ringleader of American avant-garde cinema. It’s not an auspicious beginning. How can a doc about someone who championed pushing the boundaries of filmmaking to their limit get such a prosaic and obvious introduction for a film about his life? Not to mention, if you’re devoting the time to watch a documentary about the Lithuanian-born curator, poet, and filmmaker, you probably already know the basics about him,...

Fall is upon us, and with it a fresh new crop of Netflix movies to curl up with when the weather starts to turn. Next month’s most exciting addition to the streaming service is “Mudbound,” the Southern World Ward II epic from up-and-comer-turned-force-to-be-reckoned-with Dee Rees. Netflix sealed the biggest deal of this year’s Sundance Film Festival when it paid a whopping $12.5 million for “Mudbound,” setting a high bar for the drama. Balancing out the heavier fare are classic comedies like “Men In Black” and “Scary Movie,” as well as “Field of Dreams” and “42” for the baseball lovers.
The fresh crop also includes a bevy of critically acclaimed documentaries, such as “Eventual Salvation,” “Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary,” and “Cuba and the Cameraman.” Jim Carrey’s creative process gets a deep dive in “Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond,” which includes never-before-seen behind the scenes footage from Milos Forman...

In 2012, Frank Hvam and Casper Christensen’s Danish comedy “Klown,” based on their Danish TV sitcom of the same name, had its U.S. premiere at Fantastic Fest, where it won Best Picture and Best Screenplay in the comedy category. The film follows Frank (Hvam) who kidnaps his pregnant girlfriend’s 12-year-old nephew and takes him on a debauched canoe trip with his best friend Casper (Christensen). It received critical acclaim for its “Curb Your Enthusiasm”-esque cringe comedy and its raunchy set pieces.

Clark Gregg has one of those faces; you've seen him in countless TV and film roles, usually looking serious and determined and carrying a gun. He's played enough cops, lawyers, and FBI agents — among them his recurring role as Agent Michael Casper on The West Wing and his appearance as the mysterious operative looking to recruit the title character in Iron Man — to start his own task force. It's a casting trend that amuses the 46-year-old Gregg and his friends. "I did kind of become the go-to guy for authority figures, which is something that everyone who knows me gets a really good laugh out of," he notes. "I guess I have an FBI face, I don't know."At any rate, it's one that is becoming increasingly familiar to audiences, thanks to turns in films like the aforementioned Iron Man and his regular role as the wry ex-husband to Julia Louis-Dreyfus...
