You probably know the premise of "Bones." Set in Washington DC, forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and FBI agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) solve murders by studying the mortal remains of the victims. Or do they?
For the show's 200th episode, "The 200th in the 10th", the team decided to do something totally different (and non-canon). In this episode, the show moves to 1950s Los Angeles, where Brennan is an LAPD detective pursuing Booth, a jewel thief. At his latest robbery, Booth finds a burnt skeleton while safecracking and is immediately labeled as suspect No. 1 of the murder. Brennan, knowing it's not Booth's Mo, recruits her quarry to solve this new case together. Hey, after 10 seasons, a show has earned the right to swing for the fences!
"The 200th in the 10th" is made in the style of Old Hollywood thrillers, especially Alfred Hitchcock's 1950s technicolor noir films.

After languishing in development for years, the immensely popular “Halo” gaming franchise made the giant leap to streaming television earlier this year, exceeding expectations by shattering records and satiating millions of fans worldwide, who were eager to revisit their beloved characters and storylines.
“As a fan of the series, and having played the games for the last 20 years, it’s an incredibly daunting task to be put into the position of visual effects supervisor,” admits Dominic Remane, who was tasked with creating the expansive galaxy inhabited by the warring factions at the center of the “Halo” story with his army of visual artisans and technicians. For our recent discussion, he adds, “Working on the creative design of the characters and creatures and trying to stay faithful to what the audience is expecting to see, but still have a slight twist and create our own canon to a degree, gives us...

Composer Sean Callery said he incorporated themes from Xbox’s iconic Halo video game into his score for the Paramount+ series. However, he added his own themes for the main characters including Master Chief (Pablo Schrieber) and Kwan (Yerin Ha).
“It really was born on one person’s description of him saying he was reaching for something,” Callery, appearing on the series panel at Deadline’s Sound & Screen concert event, said of the Master Chief theme. “He was reaching and I latched onto that word ‘reaching.’ The main title ended up being the guy reaching for something, so I caught a break there.”
Kwan is an original character on the show, a rebel who makes Master Chief question his orders.
Callery said he began writing character themes before action music.
“We really worked on the themes ahead of my starting the show,” Callery said. “Then they got richer as they go.

Deadline’s Sound & Screen, a showcase of television’s most moving and lauded original music from some of the industry’s top-most talent, has lifted the baton for its second edition tonight live and in person at UCLA’s Royce Hall.
Attendees of the awards-season event, which kicked off at 6:30 p.m. Pt, will be transported through the melodic sounds of these programs from a 50-piece orchestra, followed by sit-downs with the composers, conductors and music supervisors behind the works.
Scores facilitate in carrying the audience’s emotions and heighten senses in a way that would not be possible with just dialogue. Imagine HBO’s Euphoria without its hypnotic and genre-bending soundtrack? Or being marched ahead through the final frontier in CBS Studios’ Star Trek: Picard without its ethereal score? Or being carried through the sweeping migrant saga of Apple TV+’s Pachinko without its gentle orchestral melodies?

Composer Mac Quayle has become the go-to music person for many of Ryan Murphy’s projects including “Impeachment: American Crime Story.” The working relationship started in 2014 after he did some work for “The Normal Heart.” “Through that process, I met one of Ryan’s producers and I didn’t really think much of it, you know,” he tells us during our recent webchat (watch the video interview above). Six months later he got an unexpected call from that producer about the latest installment of “American Horror Story.” “He said, ‘Would you be available to write a cue for us this afternoon?’ I happened to be free. I wrote the cue and the next day they hired me.”

“There was a lot of discussion about tone,” reveals composer Sean Callery about the challenges of scoring a big budget sci-fi action series based on a hugely successful gaming franchise. He says the look and feel of the show needed to strike just the right balance “to bring an experience to people who know the gaming platform and the gaming experience really intimately and also provide an opening or an access, if you will, to people who may or may not be as familiar with the richness of the story of ‘Halo,'” he explains. In what can be called movie geek comfort food, Battle: Los Angeles and Krull have become cult favorites over the years. Why? Guilty pleasures, yes, cult status, definitely.
Even HBO Max has it listed as such.

Mark Isham’s four awards came for “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Honest Thief,” “Little Fires Everywhere” and “Togo.”
“I’m not that much of an awards guy, but even I’m impressed — four BMI awards,” Isham said in a taped acceptance speech.

As surely as the ball drops in Times Square, the beginning of every new year always yields a new movie in which Liam Neeson is armed and wronged, which brings us to 2021 and “The Marksman.”
Granted, Neeson’s reign as an action hero of a certain age has yielded at least one genuinely worthwhile film (“The Grey”) alongside some delightfully trashy collaborations with director Jaume Collet-Serra. “The Marksman,” alas, plods along without any sense of vitality or absurdity; director and co-writer Robert Lorenz (“Trouble With the Curve”) has spent much of his career working almost exclusively with Clint Eastwood, so it’s not a stretch to surmise that this vehicle was crafted to follow in the well-worn path of “Gran Torino” and “The Mule.”

The 2018 Emmy nominees for music composition for a series, original dramatic score, could hardly be more diverse: the grim cliffhanger episode of a popular cable serial; a small-combo score for a Marvel Comics heroine; the series finale of a fantasy based on Disney characters; an internationally flavored episode of a freshman broadcast series; an animated “Star Wars” spinoff; and Eastern colors for a cable series that imagines a world of sword-wielding warriors. What they all have in common, though, is how they enhanced complicated tales with emotional melodies.

At this year’s Emmys Ramin Djawadi is nominated twice for Best Music Composition for a Series, once for the “Game of Thrones” episode “The Dragon and the Wolf” and once for the “Westworld” episode “Akane No Mai.” The composer has now been nominated a total of six times, following prior bids for “Westworld” (main title theme in 2017), “Game of Thrones” (music composition in 2014), “FlashForward” (music composition in 2010) and “Prison Break” (main title theme in 2006), but he has yet to take home the big prize. Will this finally be his year?
Djawadi is up against Sean Callery (“Marvel’s Jessica Jones”), Mark Isham, Cindy O’Connor and Michael Simon (“Once Upon a Time”), W.G. Snuffy Walden and A. Patrick Rose (“Seal Team”) and Kevin Kiner (“Star Wars Rebels”). According to our predictions, Djawadi is in first place for “Game of Thrones” with odds of 1/4 and in second place for “Westworld...

Among the fans who anxiously awaited season two of “Jessica Jones” was composer Sean Callery, who admits, “I wanted it to come back literally the next year.” The veteran composer, who won an Emmy for the show’s first season (Main Title Theme in 2016), knew he had to allow time for the writers to create “this unique story” for the second installment, even if it took two-and-a-half years to pull it off. Watch our exclusive video interview with Callery above.

This year’s Emmy race in the music categories takes on greater interest because a win in the song category could instantly give songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul an Egot, having already won Oscar, Tony and Grammy awards.
Pasek and Paul — whose “La La Land,” “Greatest Showman” and “Dear Evan Hansen” songs have catapulted them into the front ranks of American songwriters in the past two years — are nominated for their new song, “In the Market for a Miracle,” written for Fox’s “A Christmas Story Live,” an adaptation of their 2012 stage musical.

Genre shows like “Game of Thrones,” “Stranger Things” and “Westworld” have been making a bigger and bigger impact at the Emmys in recent years, but for the most part the television academy still hasn’t jumped on the superhero bandwagon. Could “The Defenders” change that? Scroll down to see where the crossover event series has been submitted on the Emmy ballot.
“The Defenders” has the potential to be a game-changer because it competes as a limited series instead of as a drama series like most other comic book shows. These categories aren’t quite as over-saturated as the series categories are these days, so it may be more hospitable to this kind of action-adventure.
And it may help that the special series gives you Netflix’s four Marvel heroes for the price of one: Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), Daredevil (Charlie Cox) and Iron Fist (Finn Jones...

What happens when a spy thriller turns conspiracy-slash-mystery thriller?
You get a veteran show – one that critics have been trying to write off for years – producing some of its best episodes ever. Yes, ever.
Homeland Season 6 Episode 6 offered some Hitchcock-worthy scenes, as Carrie played cat-and-mouse with the mysterious watcher Quinn’s been ranting about all season.
Hats off to director Alex Graves for heightening the suspense through labyrinthine camera shots – as when Carrie is running through Conlin’s maze-like home trying to escape his killer – and to composer Sean Callery for the accompanying eerie score.
All Roads Lead to… No Freaking Clue
Last week in my review of Homeland Season 6 Episode 5 I drew up a list of possible suspects in the unfolding whodunit.

From the BBC's Sherlock, through Disney, Hans Zimmer and Young Sherlock Holmes: we salute the music of Mr Holmes...
Few characters have enjoyed as much reinvention as Arthur Conan Doyle's sleuth Sherlock Holmes, an enduring icon who is as much bound up with the history of cinema (and indeed stage, TV and radio) as he is with literature. Indeed, adaptations of Holmes stories stretch right the way back to the earliest days of film at the start of the 20th century. Fittingly enough given Holmes' penchant for a violin serenade, the musical scores to his adventures are as richly varied as the outcomes to his mysteries are unexpected. Here are Holmes' musical highlights, from Buster Keaton through to Benedict Cumberbatch.
Sherlock Jr. (1924)
Not, strictly speaking, a Sherlock movie but as the title implies, the legacy of the character casts a long shadow over Buster Keaton's silent classic.

You wouldn’t expect an intense drama like “Homeland” to feature such a jazzy score over its opening credits but according to composer Sean Callery, who was nominated for an Emmy for his efforts, the idea came from what was on the page. “In the script, there’s some reference to her listening to jazz,” he says, referring to Claire Danes' character, Carrie Matheson, a CIA operative. This kind of material was a good fit for Callery, who also worked on “24.” In our audio chat (listen below), he reveals that he regarded this the series as an opportunity to try something different. “The score really read more like a political thriller than an action series,” he says. “There was such an intimacy and aloneness to the character, that I thought it would be an interesting choice to try and experiment with a jazz language.” Watch dozens of video chats...

"Homeland" is never short on shocks, and it shared a few with its biggest fans to start Paleyfest 2015. Kicking off the annual celebration of all things TV, co-creator Alex Gansa told the audience gathered at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, CA (and everyone watching at home via Yahoo Screen) that the upcoming fifth season would see some big changes. “We're going to jump two-and-a-half years forward," Gansa said. “We are going to be shooting the show in Europe — probably in Germany — and Carrie will no longer be an intelligence officer.” "She's making beer and sausage," said Claire Danes, joking about her character's mysterious new profession. Gansa and Danes were on hand along with a large swath of the Emmy-winning Showtime drama's writing team. Patrick Harbinson, Alex Cary, Meredith Stiehm and Chip Johannessen, all executive producers and writers, joined Sean Callery, the show's composer, Maury Sterling, who plays Max, and Lesli Linka Glatter,...

[Spoiler Alert: Stop reading now if you haven't watched the season finale of 24: Live Another Day]
24 is a very noisy television show. For one, the show is structured around the sound of a ticking clock—it maintains the show’s rhythm. This clock serves not only to provide the series with structure and order, but with each tick it also reminds us of just how disorderly the world of 24 is and how close it is to full chaos if Jack doesn’t succeed in time. Additionally, most 24 episodes (especially this season finale) feature a musical score that runs throughout the episode along with the sound of gunfire and explosions. Essentially, there is a rarely a quiet moment.

From his record eight consecutive bids for "24," composer Sean Callery won Emmys in 2003, 2006 and 2010. So enamored were Emmy voters with his work that "24" stands as the only series that ran for more than three seasons to be nominated every year for its score. And during our recent webcam chat (watch below), this staggering statistic came as news to him. “That’s very cool; wait a minute, say that stat again,” he responded. -Break- Join the fierce Emmy Awards debate going on right now in our fiery forums Callery said he was thankful for such continued peer recognition, especially since he was surprised to even get the job on “24” back in 2001. As he recalled, “When I joined the show, I was certainly untested. Even if you don’t watch Homeland, you’re probably aware that Claire Danes’s Carrie is known for her emotional outbursts. Watch it again, then look below to find the sheet music for composer Sean Callery’s unconventionally wistful score.

But when news broke that the show was being revived as a 12-episode event series, Callery wasn't sure if he'd be involved with the new iteration and hadn't previously heard anything about it. "When I read…that it was coming back, I had not heard about it, so I did put out an email to [24 showrunner] Howard Gordon," Callery tells The Hollywood Reporter. "I said, 'I hope I'm on this. We count down 15 atmospheric modern TV titles sequences of the last 10 years, from big hits like Game Of Thrones to Dexter and more...
What makes a great title sequence? There are numerous shows with fantastic theme songs (Red Dwarf), evolving sequences (Fringe), handy introductions to the show (Once Upon A Time) or humour (Futurama). But for a truly great title sequence, all these things have to come together with an added splash of sheer invention and creativity, resulting in a sequence that perfectly expresses the spirit of the show (preferably without inducing headaches or nausea – Homeland has a brilliantly inventive title sequence that, unfortunately, can be physically uncomfortable to watch). Any sequence that simply shows clips of the actors in character, no matter how well acted or artistically put together, will not make the cut here.

At WonderCon, we spoke with three-time Emmy Award-winner Sean Callery (24, Bones), Composer of the new six-part mini-series The Kennedys airing this week on the Reelz Channel, starring Greg Kinnear (John F. Kennedy), Barry Pepper (Robert F. Kennedy), Katie Holmes (Jacqueline Onassis) and Tom Wilkinson (Joseph P. Kennedy Sr.). Known for his electro-acoustical music on ’24′ Callery’s challenge on The Kennedys was to come up with sounds that were patriotic, sympathetic, heroic and develop music that would honor “America’s Royal Family.” Some of the details he shares are:
• The transition from action series to a drama based in history
• Getting emotionally invested while scoring the tragedies of The Kennedys
• Coming up with themes and melodies
• How scoring crucial moments in ’24′ prepared him for The Kennedys
• Letting go as an artist
• What to expect out of The Kennedys
A new episode airs each day this week at 8pm Et, 5pm Pt on Reelz.

The current "Golden Age" of television has been accompanied by some terrific music.
It's impossible to imagine 'Lost' without Michael Giacchino's distinctive score, or '24' without Sean Callery's pulse-pounding music. The best scores not only add emotion and tension to good stories, they are thoughtful, creative endeavors well worth listening to on their own.
Bear McCreary created a percussive, evocative and operatic score for Syfy's late, great 'Battlestar Galactica.' If you watched the show, you no doubt recall its infamous "poundy drums," its poignant themes and its distinctive rendition of 'All Along the Watchtower,' which became a major thematic element in the show's final season.

It took them a year, but the Society of Composers and Lyricists has come out in support of the proposed Composers Union, spearheaded by the Association of Music Composers and Lyricists (Amcl) and the Teamsters Union Local 399.
As Jon Burlingame first reported in Variety, the decision came down when the Scl board recently voted to endorse the effort.
The Amcl is expected to formally announce the Scl’s endorsement at their next organizing meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15, at the Writers Guild Theater.
Since last April’s addition of several Amcl steering committee members (including composers Mike Post, Sean Callery, Rick Marvin, Richard Gibbs, and others), the Scl is the most recent organization to come out in support of the Amcl’s retooled campaign for a “benefits only” union for composers. Earlier this year, organizations including WGA, SAG, AFTRA, Afm, and the Recording Musicians Assn. (Rma) formally endorsed the effort by the Amcl.

If you’ve been watching TV the last decade, chances are you’ve heard Bear McCreary’s music. He was the composer behind Battlestar Galactica, Trauma, and now Caprica and The Walking Dead. Surprisingly, he’s only been nominated for one Emmy – for the outstanding main theme for Fox’s Human Target, which is still stuck in my head at random intervals. He was gracious enough to speak with me on Thursday, shedding some light on his expansive career and the reasons behind his unfortunate departure from Human Target.
How do you get involved with scoring a television series like Human Target? The role of the composer seems to be getting more and more important, yet it’s still a job a lot of people don’t know anything about.
Human Target was interesting because I had an early meeting with Jon Steinberg. He was looking at composers before they shot the pilot.
