Joaquin Phoenix as John Callahan and Jonah Hill as Donnie star in Don’T Worry, He Won’T Get Far On Foot.
Gus Van Sant’s Don’T Worry, He Won’T Get Far On Foot follows a man on a life-changing journey battling the alcoholism that led to an accident that puts him in a wheelchair, and along the way discovering a talent that gives him a direction in life. The film seems as much an admiration of Alcoholics Anonymous as anything but the man at the center of this darkly funny drama is not a fictional character. John Callahan was a counter-culture cartoonist who was a fixture of Portland, Oregon, until his death in 2010. Callahan’s cartoons were noted for their irreverent dark-humor and were often compared to those of Gahan Wilson and Charles Addams. Callahan’s work won him a national following and loyal fans. But those fans expecting Don’T Worry,...

When Gus Van Sant began working on Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot more than 20 years ago, the movie looked a whole lot different. Back then, Robin Williams, at the height of his considerable fame, had optioned the memoir of the same name by John Callahan and was set to star as the quadriplegic, recovering-alcoholic Portland cartoonist. And when Robin Williams is in your movie, it looks different.

Ang Lee’s “Brokeback Mountain” is perfect just the way it is, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy imagining what Gus Van Sant would have done with the project. The Oscar-winning auteur behind the New Queer Cinema classic “My Own Private Idaho” and the more-commercial “Good Will Hunting” has been offered many films throughout his career, including “Brokeback Mountain.” His latest film, “Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot,” follows the life of eccentric Portland cartoonist John Callahan, played by his “To Die For” star Joaquin Phoenix.
It’s long been reported that both Van Sant and Pedro Almodóvar were initially approached to direct the groundbreaking”Brokeback,” but Van Sant recently told IndieWire why his vision ultimately wasn’t right — and which A-list actors turned down the film.
“Nobody wanted to do it,” Van Sant said. “I was working on it, and I felt...

The acclaimed film-maker discusses new film Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot and how he ended up in a hip-hop video
John Callahan, the quadriplegic cartoonist and subject of the new film Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot, fits right in among the free thinkers dotting the filmography of director Gus Van Sant. In a career spanning three decades, Van Sant has consistently gravitated towards those subversives and visionaries who go against the grain of mainstream society. That unorthodox streak can work to their benefit, as with the janitor genius of the populist hit Good Will Hunting. Sometimes, it’s to their detriment, as with the free-living drug addicts of Van Sant’s early arthouse sensation Drugstore Cowboy. Most frequently, though, it’s a combination of both. As seen in his biopic treatments for Kurt Cobain and Harvey Milk, Van Sant’s got a thing for martyrs,...

Few independent films in 2018 can boast the type of A-list cast that Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot has. In teaming back up with star Joaquin Phoenix for a look at the life of cartoonist John Callahan, filmmaker Gus Van Sant has also brought in Jonah Hill and Rooney Mara for central roles. Usually, indies don’t pull stars like this. Then again, few movies in general are like this one. Back at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, some thought they were seeing an Academy Award hopeful here. Others? Not so much. This week, the picture finally opens, so you’ll be able to see for yourself. This flick is biopic, albeit a bit of an unusual one. IMDb explains it as such: “After Portland slacker John Callahan (Joaquin Phoenix) nearly loses his life in a car accident, the last thing he intends to do is give up drinking.

If you're a fan of Joaquin Phoenix, his latest film project Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot is a must watch because he gives one of his best performances in it. I had a chance to see the film at Sundance and I thought it was a wonderful film and one of director Gus Van Sant's best movies to date.
The movie is based on a true story and it stars Joaquin Phoenix as John Callahan, a slacker alcoholic from Portland whose life is turned upside down when he is paralyzed in a car accident. This difficult journey leads him on a path to becoming a cartoonist.
The movie has a great supporting cast that also includes Jonah Hill, Rooney Mara, and Jack Black. Here's the synopsis:
The last day Portland slacker John Callahan is able to walk, he wakes up without a hangover — because he’s...

As a fan of director Gus Van Sant and Joaquin Phoenix, I was really looking forward to seeing their new film Don’t Worry He Won’t Get Far on Foot at Sundance. There was a trailer that was released for the film last week and I absolutely loved this film and the story that it told.
This just might be Gus Van Sant’s Best film to date and Joaquin Phoenix gives one of the best performances of his career. No joke... this film might be a big award contender at the Academy Awards next year.
The movie tells the true story of the cartoonist John Callahan and how he went from an alcoholic that couldn’t function without a drink to a sober successful cartoonist.
After a catastrophic car accident, John Callahan life takes a drastic and tragic turn for him as he is paralyzed from the neck...

This is the Joaquin Phoenix’s first time at the Sundance Film Festival. “I don’t know, maybe I refused [in the past],” he said at our interview inside Wahso restaurant overlooking Park City’s Main Street. “That wouldn’t be uncommon.”
This time, he agreed to promote two well-received Amazon Studios movies. One is his second film with Gus Van Sant, a portrait of wheelchair-bound artist John Callahan, “Don’t Worry, You Won’t Get Far On Foot;” the second is Lynne Ramsay’s hardboiled noir, “You Were Never Really Here,” which earned him a surprise win for Best Actor at Cannes for his role as a tough hitman who tries to save an underage girl from prostitution.
Phoenix relished collaborating with Ramsay. “Things feel desperate with movies, pretty boring,” he said. “We’ve been making remakes for 15 years. We’ve run out of original stories about a man. There’s a...

Good Will Hunting director Gus Van Sant hasn’t delivered a remarkable film since being at the helm of Milk a decade ago. When it comes to his latest directorial effort, an adaptation of cartoonist John Callahan‘s memoir Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot, the movie is undoubtedly remarkable, but it’s due to the […]

Joaquin Phoenix excels as paralysed cartoonist John Callaghan in Gus Van Sant’s biopic, which otherwise proves to be a patchy work by a major director
When Joaquin Phoenix starts collecting lifetime achievement awards at the end of his career, the image of him as John Callahan zooming down sidewalks in a motorized wheelchair with a Nicholson-esque smirk will surely make the highlight reel. It’s a great visual, one that director Gus Van Sant leans on it so many times that you wonder what he’s patching over.
This is indicative of the central problem with Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot. There are plenty of great moments, but they jump out amid a jumble of strangely flat scenes. This doesn’t feel like the work of a great master; it’s a discordant brew that just doesn’t blend right.
