The annual 86th Academy Awards ceremony rolls into La this Sunday for a night of cinematic celebration, and whilst the winner of the coveted Best Picture Oscar hangs on everyone's lips (will it be slave drama 12 Years a Slave, American Hustle or space thriller Gravity?), the nominees for Best Original Score must wait patiently on the sidelines. Things are changing, however; movie scores are quickly becoming a point of interest for many filmgoers. Whether it's regular faces like Alexandre Desplat and John Williams or newbies like William Butler and Owen Pallett, these immensely talented individuals are most definitely shaping the face of film music. Here's our look at the 2014 Best Original Score nominees.

And in the end, it was a predictable Oscar night! The frontrunners were true frontrunners with "12 Years a Slave" taking home the Best Picture trophy while "Gravity" won all technical awards. In the acting categories, Cate Blanchett won Best Actress, Matthew McConaughey was awarded the Best Actor trophy, while Jared Leto and Lupita Nyong'o received the Supporting Actor and Actress awards, respectively.
I think Ellen did a great job hosting the award, and the best musical performer for me was Pink singing "Over the Rainbow" in tribute to "The Wizard of Oz."
And here are the winners of the granddaddy of the Awards Season -- the 2014 Oscars:

Christian Bale in .American Hustle.
Bruce Dern in .Nebraska.
Leonardo DiCaprio in .The Wolf of Wall Street.
Chiwetel Ejiofor in .12 Years a Slave.
Winner: Matthew McConaughey in .Dallas Buyers Club.

With every awards season comes a flood of “best of” compilations and top ten lists, but film scores can be tricky in that department. After all, different composers are operating on different levels, each one working toward a separate goal in his or her respective picture. Brian Tyler aims for something propulsive and heroic in Iron Man 3, while Saving Mr. Banks’ score apparently features Thomas Newman doing his best Thomas Newman impersonation. Lists can be tough when scores operate so independently of one another
So without further ado, I present my favorite film scores from 2013. Unranked:
Philomena – Alexandre Desplat
Saying Alexandre Desplat likes himself a mean waltz is like saying Johnny Depp likes himself a little eye makeup: they’re both gross understatements. Scoring Stephen Frears’ loose adaptation of Philomena Lee’s search for the son she was forced to give up at birth, Desplat makes his affinity abundantly clear with the title track,...

Star Wars, Jaws, Indiana Jones, Superman. You can’t think of these adventures without instantly hearing the music. Film scores have always been the emotional heart of the story that forever resonates with an audience.
For the first time as part of its annual Oscar Week events, the Academy presented a live “Oscar Concert” celebrating this year’s nominated scores and songs.
In what was a glorious program for music lovers, the huge audience at UCLA’s Royce Hall experienced an unforgettable night. The Academy’s 80-piece orchestra performed suites from each of the nominated original scores and prior to each piece, all the nominated composers participated in a brief conversation with film critic and radio host Elvis Mitchell about creating their scores.
Musician, Common, was the perfect host for this historic event. After a enthusiastic introduction by the actor, the evening began with Academy Governor Charles Fox conducting Jerry Goldsmith’s “Fanfare for Oscar.

The Academy held its first Oscars concert on Thursday night at Royce Hall at UCLA. It better not be the last. Long overdue, the event featured live performances of every nominated score and original song nominee from this year's Academy Awards. Hosted by Common (who made it clear he was thrilled to be there), each composer spent a few minutes speaking to noted film critic Elvis Mitchell before conducting the Academy orchestra's performance of their work. Each original song was performed by a mix of different artists except, of course, the ones they are most associated with. Those stars are being saved for Sunday night. Five-time nominee Alexandre Desplat was the first major performance as he conducted a selection from "Philomena." It's been awhile since I've heard his composition, but the live performance didn't sway me that it could (or should) be a potential upset spoiler in the category. Personally,...

All but one of our 29 Oscar Experts are predicting that "Gravity" will win Best Score at the Oscars on Sunday. That overwhelming support Steven Price leading odds of 1/10 to take home an Academy Award on his first nomination. Pete Hammond (Deadline) is the lone holdout; he is predicting that four-time Oscar also-ran Alexandre Desplat ("The Queen," "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," "The King's Speech," "Argo") will prevail for "Philomena." He is in second place with odds of 20/1. In third position with 33/1 odds is "Her", composed by first-time nominees William Butler (from Arcade Fire) and Owen Pallett. Fourth place is held by perennial also-ran Thomas Newman for "Saving Mr. Banks" with 50/1 odds. He has yet to win in his long career despite 11 previous nominations. Five-time Oscar champ John Williams is...

Oscars are set to take place this Sunday night. And just like every year, everyone wants to know who will take home Hollywood's greatest honor. Because of this, Las Vegas opened up bets and the results are in. It seems that the worst odds of the entire awards show are held by "Nebraska" and "Philomena," while "12 Years a Slave" has the best odds of winning Best Picture, Matthew McConaughey of winning Best Actor and Cate Blanchett of winning Best Actress. Take a look at the list below to see the results for each category. Other non-listed categories include whether the same film will win Best Picture and Best Director (Odds favor "No") and whether Pharrell will wear his mountain hat (Odds favor "Yes"). Best Picture: * 12 Years a Slave - 2/11 * Gravity - 4/1 * American Hustle - 15/1 * The Dallas Buyers Club - 20/1 * The Wolf of Wall Street - 35/1 * Captain Phillips - 150/1 * Her -...

Unlike a singular song, a film’s score stays with a narrative from beginning to end, helping to reinforce the emotions on screen and round out the overall feeling and impression of a film. It is a delicate balance and it is the scores which are able to make an impression, without distracting from the film itself, that rise to the top to become the scores that are remembered long after a film ends. The nominees for Best Original Score this year are a combination of familiar names (John Williams, Alexandre Desplat, Thomas Newman) along with some new ones (Steven Price, William Butler, Owen Pallett). The five films these scores are nominated from are powerful stories about people dealing with extraordinary situations from fighting for love, family, stories, even one’s own life. The music in each of these films is an incredibly important element as it helps give each story the weight it deserves. Williams...

Check out a new featurette about scoring "Her" with Oscar-nominated composer William Butler of Arcade Fire and Owen Pallett of Final Fantasy below. Also read our interview with Butler here. Writer/director Spike Jonze, production designer Kk Barrett and chanteuse Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs also graced Kcrw's Morning Becomes Eclectic studio with a live performance of "The Moon Song" from Jonze's Best Picture contender "Her." Warner Bros. has also revealed a new featurette for the song. Watch below. Singer-songwriter Karen O will perform the acoustic number, up for the Best Original Song Oscar, at the Academy Awards on March 2. Karen and Jonze previously collaborated on the soundtrack for his 2009 film "Where the Wild Things Are." Accompanied in the film by Joaquin Phoenix's ukelele, "The Moon Song" may be a bit twee for some Oscar voters, but with Karen O's honeyed vocals and Jonze and Barrett on guitar,...

Oscar-nominated William Butler's first-time experience composing the wistful score for Spike Jonze's "Her" with his Arcade Fire partner Owen Pallett was a bit of a romance as well as a crash course in moviemaking. And yet the experience opened him up more intuitively to the collaborative process, which also paid off on their latest album, "Reflektor." "Because we're very much our own bosses and working on something where you had to defer to the director and see it through his eyes was a great musical challenge that you could apply to everything else," Butler admits. "Now I can see an album through my band mate's eyes instead of just solely focusing on me. And the same with the film: What do these characters need? It expands you and makes you more open as a musician." The Montreal-based Arcade Fire duo spent more than a year crafting their score...

For the first time ever, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is hosting a concert honoring all the nominees for Best Original Score and Best Original Song before the Oscars telecast.
The Oscar Concert will take place just days before the March 2 Oscars ceremony, and feature orchestral performances of the nominated scores, as well as vocal performances of the four nominated songs. The show is open to the public.
"We expect to have a full house very quickly because it's really a one-of-a-kind concert," said academy music branch governor Charles Fox. "It's never been done before and it's featuring some of the world's best composers."
Those composers will conduct an 80-piece orchestra "suite" of their nominated scores, described by the New York Daily News as "a composition that uses elements from the film score, [composed] specifically for the show." Composers will also offer a brief discussion of their work.

The 2014 Oscar nominations were announced this morning and I have already made note of some of the "surprise" omissions in my post with the complete list of nominees, but it's always better to open up a new thread to look at little closer and see what surprises the Academy had to offer. Now I know the headline uses the word "snub", but that's just more out of familiarity since there really isn't anything such as a snub as there are only so many slots to be filled, which is why when making predictions for the nominees if the films and performances you predicted would be nominated didn't get in, they were probably replaced by those films you almost predicted would be nominated. That said, let's go down the line shall wec Best Picture No big surprises here unless you look at the nominations as a whole, which would be to...

Arcade Fire looked as stunned as anyone when their name was called as the winner of the Album of the Year trophy at Sunday night's Grammy Awards.
While the Canadian collective's fans and some critics may have been holding out hope that a genuinely independent rock band could overcome the odds and beat out such major mainstream stars as Eminem, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and the night's big winners, Lady Antebellum, it seemed like a real long shot that The Suburbs would pull it off.
"It honestly never even crossed my mind, at all," singer Win Butler told "Access Hollywood" about the possibility that...

Arcade Fire frontman William Butler is heading back to university to give a lecture to students. The rocker will appear at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois on November 2 to give a talk about how he has merged his musical career with social activism, according to student website NorthByNorthwestern.com.
Butler, who majored in poetry and creative writing, and his bandmates have raised $1 million to help earthquake-ravaged Haiti. Asha Toulmin, a student fellow with the university's Center for Civic Engagement, says, "He's a really unique and interesting individual because he's taken a field like music that a lot of people don't necessarily associate with social activism..."
"It's just really about trying to help students see how they can tie in what they're doing now with creating something really valuable and meaningful later, after they graduate."...

How many of you out there have seen Charles Band's and his Full Moon Feature's Gingerdead Man starring Gary Busey? Well if you haven't you need to so you can watch Gingerdead Man 2 :The Passion of the Crust and the upcoming Gingerdead Man 3: Saturday Night Cleaver. Right now let's focus on the Passion of the Crust which is the evident sequel to Gingerdead Man.
Gingerdead Man 2: The Passion of the Crust is as much fun as you could expect from a Full Moon movie. Watching each victim (this time on a movie set) get stalked down and killed by this killer cookie is just laughable yet still enjoyable to the point it just draws you in. The effects are what you would expect but to me that makes it more enjoyable and cheesy...

Dear Rihanna,
Nice work snagging Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp for your fantasy baseball team. Way to get ahead of everybody who will be drafting in March. We personally wouldn't have used our first-round pick on him — especially since outfield is about the deepest position in fantasy ball — but any time you've got the opportunity to lock up a guy with 30-home run, 100-rbi power (not to mention 40+ steal potential and a career .826 Ops), we suppose you gotta make that move.
Still, we'd be lying if we said we weren't a bit concerned about the rest of your fantasy team. Taking an Of that high basically means you're gonna be screwed in the later rounds, especially when it comes to middle infielders. Trust us, you don't want to head into 2010 with Ronnie Belliard as your everyday second basemen.
So, to help salvage your season, we've gone ahead a made...

As the golden age of 80's horror was coming to an end, this Shock writer couldn't help but fall in love with the imaginative stuff that was coming out of Full Moon Entertainment, especially any of their low-budget schlocky films involving killer dolls. So when word came out that they'd be blowing off the dust of two of their most popular franchises, Demonic Toys and Puppet Master with brand new entries, a swell of nostalgia and excitement took me over. Sure, those particular series might not be held in such high esteem by genre fans as some of the other horror heavies, but damned if they aren't entertaining as all hell. For part one of our two part Full Moon coverage, Shock tracked down writer/director William Butler for a candid chat about his latest film and the next...
