After performing epically in quite a few romantic comedies until 2010 and winning the hearts of fangirls worldwide, Gerard Butler seems to have switched lanes permanently into the action genre. Well, he is acing it in that too, considering how the 54-year-old actor is once again reportedly all set to return to the big screens with Empire State, his next major action-thriller project.

But while he is still performing as brilliantly as ever in this respective genre, viewers can’t help but notice a similar pattern in a lot of Butler’s movies of the action/thriller/adventure themes. That being said, after hearing reports of this very upcoming action movie of his, a lot of fans seem to know already what to expect to see from it!

If there’s anything worse than a millionaire who fails to contribute anything meaningful to the world, it’s taking the fall for one who’s murdered and finding yourself in the crosshairs of thugs and criminals. Jason Statham is back in business with Lionsgate to star in the upcoming action-thriller Mutiny with Plane and Blood Father director Jean-Francois Richet at the helm.

In Mutiny, after his billionaire industrialist boss is murdered in front of him, Cole Reed is set up to take the fall for the crime— leaving him on the run as he works to uncover an international conspiracy.

The year 2023 boasts interesting, highly-anticipated movies, from action flicks to historical dramas. One of the newest films to hit theaters is Plane, starring Gerard Butler as a strong-willed commercial pilot. With the actor’s history of playing the tough, determined “everyman,” fans have been lining up to see his latest project. Interestingly, Plane is a movie that has been a few years in the making. With a release date that has changed at least once, many fans are curious about the process of getting the flick to the big screen and which stars are featured in the film.
‘Plane’ was first announced in 2016
Plane tells the story of a commercial pilot named Brodie Torrance. After a forced emergency landing, Torrance quickly realizes that the remote island is controlled by a fierce local militia. You can imagine the committee meetings devoted to finding just the right title for primo action star Gerard Butler’s latest, in which he plays an airline pilot encountering lightning strikes that force him to crash-land on a rebel-infested remote island in the Philippines. As it criss-crosses the airline disaster genre and frightening jungle thriller, why not just tell the public what it really is. While it could be called Terror Island, or maybe Pirates Jungle, or Flight to the Death, the producers came up with the inspired plain Plane. That works well enough for anyone expecting Airport meets The High and the Mighty, but really it is just the first half that fits snugly into that category, nail-biting as it is.
Most of the action comes when the plane somehow survives a fierce lightning storm (nice FX here) by crash-landing in the largely uninhabited Jolo Island Cluster in the...

January is the time for campy horror movies (see: “M3GAN”), extremely late-coming Oscar contenders (International Feature hopefuls “Saint Omer” and “Close”), and of course, ridiculous action thrillers, preferably starring Gerard Butler.
And Lionsgate is more than happy to provide us with the latter via “Plane,” Butler’s newest action movie. The studio released the final trailer for the film Wednesday, a week ahead of its theatrical release.
As its title suggests, the story of “Plane” begins on an airplane, piloted by Brodie Torrance (Butler), which is carrying Louis Gaspare (“Evil” star Mike Colter), a man being extradited on charges of homicide. After the plane gets heavily damaged by a freak storm, Brodie is forced to crash-land in Jolo, an island in the Philippines overrun by anti-government militias. When one of the militias, led by the short-tempered Dele (Yoson An), takes the majority of the crew and passengers hostage, Brodie is...

Exclusive: Christian Gudegast (Den of Thieves) has closed a deal to direct the thriller Crown Vic for MadRiver Pictures.
Crown Vic is described as a too-insane-to-be-true crime story set in the early 1980s San Fernando Valley — a world where L.A. cops, mythologized by TV shows from Dragnet to CHiPs, were rock stars who operated with unchecked power. Its protagonists are Richard Ford and Robert Von Villas, two Vietnam War heroes turned superstar LAPD cops, who parlayed their positions to get rich, while cozying up to Hollywood’s biggest TV stars. The duo went on to build an underground criminal operation as thieves, gun runners and murderers for hire, until their unwilling business partner risked everything to bring them down.

As Armageddon Time earns career-best reviews and gears up an awards run, James Gray strikes as the iron’s hot. Deadline reports movement on a coming-of-age John F. Kennedy biopic he’ll write (reworking a script originally by Samuel Franco and Evan Kilgore) and direct next year for Gray’s longtime producers Anthony Katagas and Marc Butan.
In what Gray calls “a unique opportunity to sweep away the myth and explore a side we don’t know at all,” the film will track Kennedy’s youthful ambition to impress his father and the World War II experiences that, as biopics always have it, helped create a man who changed history. Which is to suggest plenty potential for cliché, yet the sinking of Kennedy’s Pt boat and his subsequent, herculean efforts to save his men might engender an incredible and harrowing setpiece. And having spent years since Gray projects wondering if another would ever come,...

Just as his latest film “Armageddon Time” is hitting theaters, James Gray has already set up his next project. The “Ad Astra” and “Lost City of Z” director will helm a film about John F. Kennedy for MadRiver Pictures.

Kennedy, was a successful businessman and a leading member of the Democratic Party. The film will particularly focus on Kennedy’s time in World War II, where he served as a commander of a patrol boat that was sunk by a Japanese destroyer in 1943. Exclusive: MadRiver Pictures has set James Gray to direct its untitled John F. Kennedy biopic, which will focus on JFK’s evolution from an unremarkable young man desperate to prove his mettle to his powerful father, into a WWII hero whose triumph over adversity-hardened leadership skills that forged his path to the White House.
Gray will rewrite a script that was first penned by Samuel Franco & Evan Kilgore, and the plan is to get underway next year. This comes as Focus Features today opens Armageddon Time, Gray’s coming of age film that premiered at Cannes last May and at the Telluride and New York Film Festivals. Trying to follow in the footsteps of last year’s best original screenplay winner Kenneth Branagh (“Belfast”), Focus Features is trying to position writer, director and co-producer James Gray as one of the awards season’s breakout nominees for “Armageddon Time.” The film is currently sitting with a respectable 89 on Rotten Tomatoes, and the awards team will be looking for opportunities beyond the Writer’s Branch.
After debuting the film at the Cannes Film Festival, before making stops at Telluride and later this week at the New York Film Festival, the distributor has revealed exclusively to Variety its awards submission categories for the film’s actors.

STXfilms has closed a deal to premiere its upcoming movie “My Son,” a thriller starring James McAvoy and Claire Foy, on both Peacock and The Roku Channel.
The film’s release represents a deviation from traditional streaming windows, in which one digital platform would house a new title for an extended period of time. As part of the deal, which was negotiated by David Spiegelman for STX, the two online services will share rights to “My Son” throughout the year. The film will premiere first on NBCUniversal’s subscription-based service Peacock on Sept. 15. Months later, it will be available to stream for free on The Roku Channel in the U.S. starting on Dec. 15.
“We’re thrilled to have worked with Peacock and Roku on this bespoke deal that uniquely tailors everyone’s needs and maximizes value for all three companies and our talent partners,” said Adam Fogelson, the chairman...

James McAvoy in his latest film "My Son" was given no script, no specific dialogue and was only aware of basic plot details for his character. The remaining cast and crew was fully aware of everything that was about to happen to him, and in the first trailer for "My Son," you can see him improvising and reacting in real time to the action as the story unfolds.
"My Son" is directed by Christian Carion and is a remake of Carion's own French film from 2017. That film too was a similar improvisational experiment, in which the film's lead was also kept in the dark about the plot until it all happened. In McAvoy's case, that means we get to see him "have an experience that no actor gets to have," as he says in an introduction for the trailer.

This year, Netflix grabbed a whopping 35 Oscar nominations for its slate of original movies, including 10 nominations for David Fincher’s “Mank,” six nominations for Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” and five nominations for the August Wilson adaptation “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” which featured the final performance from star and Best Actor nominee Chadwick Boseman. The total number of nominations for the streaming service ranked among the most ever by a single studio and dwarfed the Netflix tally in 2020 when the platform grabbed 24 nominations to lead all distributors.
But judging merely by quantity, 2021 could become the biggest year yet for Netflix. Over the final four months of the year, the studio will debut more than 40 titles, including new movies from past Oscar favorites like Adam McKay, Jane Campion, and Paolo Sorrentino as well as buzzy features from first-time filmmakers such as Lin-Manuel Miranda and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

The Barack and Michelle Obama-led shingle Higher Ground has acquired the Michael Keaton film “Worth,” in partnership with their distributor Netflix.
Directed by Sara Colangelo (“The Kindergarten Teacher”), the film is adapted from the Kenneth Feinberg memoir “What Is Life Worth?” and follows the lawyer’s process in awarding the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund.
Netflix will stream the film in the U.S., Canada, Latin America, Australia, the UK, France, Turkey and select other countries. The project played in competition at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, prior to the global spread of coronavirus. It’s set for release this September, marking the 20th anniversary of the attack on New York City.
Feinberg was appointed special master of the compensation fund, tasked by Congress to allocate financial rewards to the victims of the tragedy. The film follows his search to calculate incalculable loss in the face of cynicism, bureaucracy, and the politics of division.

The project played in competition at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, prior to the global spread of coronavirus. It’s set for release this September, marking the 20th anniversary of the attack on New York City.

Solstice Studios has acquired worldwide rights to the Gerard Butler action thriller “The Plane” on the heels of Lionsgate dropping out of distributing because producers were unable to obtain production insurance that would cover a Covid-19 outbreak.
Lionsgate boarded “The Plane” a year ago at the American Film Market, buying the rights to the film for North America, Latin America, the U.K. and India.
Solstice said Friday it is targeting a June 28, 2021, production start date. The producing team had originally planned to shoot the film in Malaysia last month, but opted against doing so when Covid cases spiked in the country. The filmmakers had been considering shooting in the Dominican Republic and in the U.S., but had not locked down a location, leading to Lionsgate deciding to back away from the project.

Exclusive: Solstice Studios has acquired worldwide rights to The Plane, an elevated action thriller that stars Gerard Butler. The film is currently booked for takeoff on June 28, 2021, shooting in Southeast Asia.
Deadline revealed earlier this week that Lionsgate exited the film because the production could not get Covid insurance and the risk became too great for the indie studio on the $50 million budget film. The picture was the hottest package at 2019 AFM that sold out every territory, and it was originally supposed to be shooting now in Malaysia but stalled because of a Covid spike there. Same thing happened when an attempt was made to move production to the Dominican Republic and then the U.S. The Plane illustrates the troubles facing any indie distributors and producer/financiers trying to mount pictures because insurance companies aren’t writing Covid policies now or are doing it for Covid and “civil authority” clauses at prohibitively high rates.

Lionsgate has pulled out as distributor of forthcoming Gerard Butler thriller The Plane because producers were unable to secure production insurance covering a coronavirus outbreak.
The move highlights one of the big challenges currently facing US producers and distributors, who have found pandemic insurance all but impossible to come by. Attempts to get the US government to provide an insurance backstop scheme have so far come to nothing.
Lionsgate took rights to the film for North America, the UK and other territories at last year’s AFM.
