What began as a mod called Defense of the Ancients for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos in 2003 has become a multimedia empire for Valve. Dota 2 currently reigns as one of the most popular multiplayer online battle arena (Moba) games on the planet, spawning multi-million-dollar esports tournaments as well as a huge viewership on live streaming platforms. With Dota: Dragon’s Blood, Valve and Netflix bring the world of Dota to anime.
Produced by Legend of Korra animation company Studio Mir, along with Netflix Animation and Valve, this new take on the franchise is inspired by the lore found in the Moba, but is also serious narrative expansion of this universe, introducing backstories for not only some of the characters we know from the games but the goddesses and dragons that rule the world of Dota beyond the mortal realm. In a new interview on Robert Meyer Burnett’s video series Robservations, Bryan Fuller has been discussing his original Mirror Universe plans for Star Trek: Discovery.
It’s a rare occurrence for the creator of Hannibal and Pushing Daisies to talk at length about his time on the flagship CBS All-Access Star Trek series. Fuller spent the early stages of his writing career on the bulk of Star Trek: Voyager, and penned a couple of Deep Space Nine instalments, so it seemed like developing a Trek show of his own might be a dream gig, but that dream soured long before Discovery‘s first season made it to our screens, with CBS asking Fuller to step down as showrunner in October 2016, almost a year ahead of Discovery‘s eventual debut.

Look, I enjoyed Justice League. It was a fun and entertaining film. But, there's one major aspect of the film that bugged the living hell out of me! It was Superman's CGI upper lip!
When Henry Cavill was brought in for reshoots with Joss Whedon, he had to grow out a mustache for his role in the next Mission: Impossible film. Unfortunately, he was contractually obligated not to shave it, so Warner Bros. had to spend a shit-ton of money to remove it digitally.
It was even more unfortunate that it turned out to be some of the worst CGI in a major big-budget film that I've seen in a long time. As much as I enjoyed how the character of Superman was handled, that CGI upper lip was super freakin' distracting, creepy looking, and laughably bad. When previously talking about reshooting his Superman scenes with his mustache, Cavill told...

We already knew that legendary composer John Williams would be returning to a galaxy far, far away to provide the score for Rian Johnson's upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi. But if a new rumor proves true, it could give us a window into Johnson's approach for the film.
Filmmaker Robert Meyer Burnett (Free Enterprise) recently tweeted the following:
There was a Last Jedi scoring session in La today. That's encouraging.

Last Jedi scoring update. Last Thursday was John Williams' 85th Birthday. He's conducting. Rian Johnson wants to use the score for editing.
— Robert Meyer Burnett (@BurnettRM) February 12, 2017
As /Film points out, the idea that Johnson wants to use a completed (or partially-completed) score runs contrary to the typical post-production process, in which an editor works with a director using temp tracks as music to craft the cut of the movie, and...

The story of Star Trek: The Next Generation's HD remastering, and why Deep Space 9 and Voyager are unlikely to get a Blu-ray release.
TrekNews has a fascinating article with Robert Meyer Burnett, the lead producer, editor, and writer for the special features on the Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Enterprise Blu-rays. Burnett discusses the incredible amount of work that went into those projects, as well as why he doesn't think we'll ever get a high-definition, remastered Blu-ray release for either Star Trek: Deep Space Nine or Star Trek: Voyager. Here's what he had to say...
In the interview, Burnett goes into great detail to explain why a remastering of the DS9 and Voyager episodes would take likely not sell well enough to warrant the time and money it would take to producer. His educated estimate? Remastering both series into HD would cost roughly $40 million.

Earlier this year, a prelude to a Star Trek fan film was released called Axanar. I've posted that 21-minute short for you to watch below. That short was crowdfunded and it served as a stepping stone to a much larger project. The team that made that launched another crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo for a full-length feature film, and so far it has raised over $1.13 million.
Over the years, Paramount and CBS — the rights holders to the Star Trek franchise — have supported fan films and even encouraged them at times! But this week they slapped the production company of this Star Trek film with a lawsuit. I guess it just got too big for them, and they felt threatened by it.
It probably didn't help that Axanar is officially described as the "first independent" Star Trek film, and not a fan film. Here's the official description of the project:
Axanar is the first fully-professional,...

Here's a new rumor that's sort of an old rumor, but let's go with it. Quite a few years ago, "Star Trek: Federation" was put into development as a possible CBS series, with big names like Robert Burnett, Bryan Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie producing, and Geoffrey Thorne writing it. Then J.J. Abrams rebooted the franchise, and the TV series was effectively killed. But in this era of shared universes, nothing stays dead for long. Latino Review reports that CBS is back at work on a "Star Trek" series, and that Singer is once again being tossed around to take on the gig in some capacity. But that's about it. io9 adds that whatever is being developed is probably new, and has nothing to do with the previous 'Federation' series, which makes a lot of sense, because we'd imagine Skydance will probably want to tie it into the movie series in some manner.

Further comments have emerged from British actor/writer Simon Pegg in regards to the upcoming third film in the rebooted "Star Trek" franchise. Pegg and Doug Jung are working on the screenplay for the film which Justin Lin ("Fast Five") is slated to direct.
Speaking with Den of Geek this past week about the trailer release of "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation," Pegg admits the responsibility of this job is terrifying. Yet he says he hasn't bothered with keeping any of the previous version of the script that Roberto Orci was involved in:
"No. It's completely new. I haven't read Bob (Orci)'s script and they didn't want us to. So we went back to the drawing board. We had creative meetings with Justin and there were things he wanted in there.
I haven't written like this before. I've never been a custodian of something, it's usually mine what I'm writing.

Latino Review says that CBS is planning to bring Star Trek back to TV. Director Bryan Singer has been suggested as a possible executive producer for the project through his Bad Hat Harry Productions.
It’s been 50 years since the first Star Trek pilot, called “The Cage”, was produced. Next year will be the official 50th anniversary of Star Trek’s network debut as a weekly series. To celebrate this auspicious anniversary, the possibility of a new Star Trek TV series is being seriously considered.
There have been five Trek shows on the small screen (not counting the animated series). The most recent Trek spin-off series, Star Trek: Enterprise, went off the air in 2005. Since then, fans have never stopped asking for a new entry in the Star Trek tele-verse. Despite the new films by Jj Abrams, which have gotten mixed reactions from old-time Trek fans, the call for another spin-off has not stopped.

Lots of jokes out there about Ultron rocking two blue-tooth pieces. Stand-alone Star Wars movie script writer Gary Whitta apparently had some notes for Joss Whedon to make the robotic menace ever more "douchey". Disappointed that my note to @josswhedon to give Ultron a popped collar to make him seem like more of a super dick apparently was ignored. — Scary Whitta (@garywhitta) October 23, 2014 Josh Costella of Modern Myth Media raises an interesting point on similarities between Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Age of Ultron. Are Marvel repeating villainous motivations in wanting to make the world safe through excessive force? Also on the schedule for Sunday (traditionally the family-themed day of the event) are "Under the Dome," an update on the adaptation of George R.R. Martin's werewolf/Pi/serial killer mashup novella The Skin Trade, a chance to build your own monster, surviving in a post-apocalyptic world, a Neil Gaiman Spotlight panel, a look at what's coming from Diamond Select Toys, a how-to on creating suspenseful, exciting, anxiety-inducing stories, and per usual, a screening of "Buffy the Musical: Once More with Feeling" to close things out.
Since the horror offerings are so light, we've expanded our Day 4 highlights list to cover such topics as the future of sci-fi novels, the 50th anniversary of "Doctor Who,...

The second season of the expensive and exhaustively painstaking remaster of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" hits Blu-ray in a few hours following on from the highly successful launch of the first season back in July.
Aside from an audio glitch in early discs, which was quickly remedied with a replacement program, the remastering job performed on the first season was met with universal acclaim by reviewers and Trek fans alike.
Post-production house CBS Digital was widely, and deservedly, lauded for their work which is amongst the best restorative work ever done on a Blu-ray title in the history of the format. Same goes for Robert Meyer Burnett and his team who have been assembling some truly incredible extras for these sets.
As a result of the quality of all this hard work, many were keenly awaiting this second season set which contains some of the best early episodes of the season.

Sunday July 15th is the last day of Comic-Con 2012, and most of us will be completely worn out looking like Spider-Man in the image above. Chances are he's asleep under that mask. Sunday has always been a cool down day for us, we kind of just try to relax a little bit more and enjoy it. That doesn't mean their isn't anything to see or do though!
We've got a Fringe screening and Q&A, Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer 20th Anniversary, Sons of Anarchy, the annual Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical screening, and more! I've always wanted to go the Buffy musical sing-a-long, but am usually trying to leave San Diego before it starts.
Just a little reminder, we will be having our annual GeekTyrant meet up this year to meet our readers, which is something we always enjoy doing! That will take place on Wednesday night, and...

I’m a big fan of Dave Parker. I have been for a few years now. When I first saw The Dead Hate The Living it connected with me the way you do with fun movies that seem to be made just for you. (Sure, it has its share of haters, but so do I. I was, after all, married for a while there.) I dug it and all its flaws, which to me made it all the more fun.
A few years later I noticed the name kept popping up during the credits on the special features I was watching. Was it the same ‘Dave Parker’? A quick IMDb check showed it to be true and it got me curious. How does someone go from helming his own movie to making Epk’s? I did a little research and had my eyes opened a...

Robert Meyer Burnett is living proof that the geeks have taken over. A lifelong fan of horror, science fiction and fantasy – who waved his freak flag high and proud in his film directorial debut Free Enterprise – Burnett has worked as a producer on The Hills Run Red and as an editor and director on behind-the-scenes documentaries for DVDs ranging from Tron to Superman Returns to Fantasia. His latest project is Cinemax's Femme Fatales, on which he serves as director and editor. I caught up with Burnett on the Femme Fatales set earlier this summer, where he talked about the challenges of crafting a weekly anthology series in today's world, and how his show is opening the door for more genre offerings from Cinemax....

A voodoo ritual is invoked. Castle (Nathan Fillion) engages in a romp with his first ex-wife Meredith (Darby Stanchfield) and to think just last week, he told Beckett (Stana Katic) he couldn't find the right girl to marry, from this we see why. He's not really into the whole love and marriage scene! She throws a spanner in the 'no-strings attached sex with the ex', by saying she's moving back to New York, much to Castle's chagrin, since women are only there for one thing for him. Okay I'm being harsh I know, never mind. The Db from the earlier voodoo ritual is found by a homeless man states Esposito (Jon Heurtas) and Castle has to publicly announce he's had sex with his first ex-wife, which is a "special brand of hell..." and something akin to a guilty pleasure of having a deep fried Twinkie." He tells them to...

Comic-Con International has released the full schedule for Sunday July 24th for San Diego Comic-Con 2011. This is the final day of the convention. Sunday is known as Kids day and is usually the slowest of all the days, there are a few surprises though. In all my years of going to Comic-Con I've never been to a panel in Hal H. Usually nothing is happening in Hall H on Sunday, this year there are a few TV programs going on in Hall H such a as Glee, Supernatural, Doctor Who, The Cleveland Show, Sons of Anarchy, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and this year Buffy the Musical will be in the great Hall as well. I've never been to the Buffy Musical event, and I think I finally want to go this year. A couple of other things worth noting are a one on one panel with Nathan Fillion, and Max Brooks talks about zombies.

The first screening of Martin Campbell's Green Lantern happened on Sunday night in Hollywood, and the early response so far has been very positive. Read some tweets and quotes after the jump. Robert Meyer Burnett (director of Free Enterprise) on Twitter [1]: Green Lantern fucking Rocked. The 3D was Awesome. As a lifelong DC fan, the opening ten minutes made me squeal like schoolgirl. ... Believe it. The first ten minutes will make you believe. The 3D is also outstanding. ... Green Lantern was terrific fun. The fact that it works at all is a miracle, but it really does cook. The first ten minutes sold me. ... The 3D in the opening ten minutes is wonderful. But You Must see it with polarized glasses. The color is great. ... It's not campy at all. The humor is earned. And Mark Strong as Sinestro was Awesome. ... I Loved Green Lantern. Don't know why,...

It was revealed recently that filmmaker Bryan Singer pitched a new Star Trek TV series called Star Trek: Federation, but it ultimately never happened, which is a shame because it sounds like it would have been a really good series. Singer is a big Trek fan and he even appeared in an uncredited role on Star Trek: Nemesis.
According to a great report from TrekMovie, in 2005 Singer was having dinner with screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) and director Robert Meyer Burnett (Free Enterprise) one night. During that dinner the three of them started talking about the idea of pitching a new Star Trek series that would fill the gap left by Star Trek: Enterprise, which had just been cancelled. So Burnett recruited screenwriter Geoffrey Thorne (Leverage) to help create a 25-page series proposal outlining the show, and what it would be.

Star Trek fever is starting to grip us here at Obsessed With Film as the sequel to J.J. Abrams’ impossibly brilliant 2009 franchise reboot gears up to film this summer. Add to that, soon our very own Simon Gallagher will beam up an essay on his own desire to see a new Star Trek TV show put into production and what he hopes it might revolve around. As coincidence would have it, this may turn out to be perfect timing as Trek Movie (thanks to /film for passing on the link) have gotten their hands on an actual Star Trek TV proposal for a show that might have been but sadly wasn’t.
If you’ve been following Trek Movie closely lately then you will have no doubt heard Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Jonathan Frakes talk about a show that X-Men and Superman Returns director Bryan Singer had been...

[1] A little while back, Star Trek: The Next Generation actor and director Jonathan Frakes revealed that director Bryan Singer (X-Men) once had a pitch for a Star Trek television show that never came to fruition. Singer is a well-known Trek fan, and thanks to some string-pulling by X-Men and Star Trek star Patrick Stewart, has even appeared in an uncredited role on Star Trek: Nemesis. Recently, more details have come to light about Singer's failed Star Trek proposal. Read on after the jump to fantasize about what could've been. According to an in-depth story over at TrekMovie, back in 2005, Singer was having dinner with screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) and director Robert Meyer Burnett (Free Enterprise) when the three of them got to talking about the idea of pitching a new Star Trek series to fill the gap left by Star Trek: Enterprise, which had just been cancelled.
