Undiscovered Gyrl
by Allison Burnett (Vintage)
The gimmick of e-mail novels was spawned about five minutes after the birth of e-mail itself. Blog novels? Every other new novelist these days is a blogger, or birthed their idea on a blog. Which is why Allison Burnett's new book, Undiscovered Gyrl, is actually so welcome. It doesn't use blogging as a gimmick, it uses it as a setting. Like London to Dickens, or the Mississippi River to Twain, that vague "place" we all inhabit known as cyberspace is where this book lives.

The players: Director: Kevin Tancharoen, Writer: Allison Burnett, Cast: Kherington Payne, Anna Maria Perez de Tagle, Paul McGill, Asher Book, Kristy Flores
Facts of interest: Remake of the 1980 "Fame."
The plot: A bunch of youngsters try to survive four years at the prestigious New York City High School of Performing Arts.
Our thoughts: Sure, I’ll remember the name of this disappointing remake, but that’s about it already. I can’t say I’m surprised Kevin Tancharoen’s new version of the 1980 musical lacks energy and heart, and as forgettable as this film is, I also admit I didn’t find this big-screen experience to be as boring as I expected. »

Before it became a veritable cottage industry – having spawned a six season TV series, an Off-Broadway production, multiple imitators and the current big screen remake – Fame meant one thing only: the 1980 Alan Parker film. And that’s as it should be, as Parker imbued his depiction of the struggles of students trying to make it at Manhattan’s grueling School of Performing Arts with an inimitable combination of poignant nostalgia and hard edged realism. In the current reworking, first time filmmaker Kevin Tancharoen goes, as the famous ballad sung by Irene Cara in the original says, “Out here on my own.” Let it never be said that he attempted to duplicate Parker’s work. Instead, he and screenwriter Allison Burnett reduce Christopher Gore’s original screenplay to shambles, turning it into a heavily stylized over-produced mess. This is not, in any sense, an accurate depiction of life at an arts school. It »

The latest take on Fame, an edgy ’80s construction built on perseverance through real-life hardships, has become filled with pleasant platitudes such as reaching for celestial bodies, overcoming mountains, never giving up hope and other slogans usually seen on office posters. It’s a frigid and empty drama built on teen clichés and faux-grit while set against a thumping urban beat.
Much like the 1980 original from Alan Parker, Kevin Tancharoen’s updated version strips away emotion and substance only to cram the film with sappy melodrama and see-thru grit. Besides the movie’s PG-rated slant (the original was rated-r) which is skewed towards the Disney/High School Musical crowd, the dismal writing from Allison Burnett and shoddy performances, sans Megan Mullally, Charles S. Dutton and Kelsey Grammer, bring the film down to a level of boredom not felt since the creation of the Venetian Waltz.

My TV, my laptop, my bus stop: Fame's cast of unknowns keep popping into my life at the most unwanted moments, like celebrity-worshiping Jehovah's Witnesses encouraging me to examine their Fame pamphlets and perhaps sign up for a "Claim Your Fame" essay writing contest while I'm at it. Then there's that ubiquitous Coca-Cola-like logo, meant to evoke $$$/power/corporate backing/whatever, and suitable, like all religious iconography, to wear around my neck and ward off evils, like anonymity or being dropped from my label. Where was I? Oh right. Fame opens tomorrow. It hasn't screened for many outlets, but the reception from those for whom it has has been overwhelmingly negative. Here's the nine ugliest reactions to emerge so far.
9. "The 2009 version is pure hell - boring, redundant and talentless. In attempting to "reinvent" the original story, screenwriters Aline Brosh McKenna and Allison Burnett offer us the plot of "High School Musical »

Lindsay Lohan has been snubbed for a new film role about a sexually curious teen - after producers ruled the troubled star is too "jaded" to play the part.
The actress has struggled to reclaim a top spot at the box-office since 2004's Mean Girls, and her promising career has been marred by a string of drink driving charges and allegations of excess boozing and partying.
Just last week (begs10Aug09) Lohan denied reports her on/off lesbian lover Samantha Ronson staged an intervention to confront the star about her alleged drug abuse, brushing the reports off as "weird".
And writer Allison Burnett has now revealed he's passed up the actress as a prospect in a movie adaptation of his novel Undiscovered Gyrl, about a teen blogging about her sexual coming-of-age - because of Lohan's troubled past.
Burnett tells U.S. magazine Ok!, "(Lohan) is a wonderful actress, but her fame and baggage would only work against her." »
