WarnerMedia is preparing to sever its four decades long distribution alliance with Roadshow Films, moving its theatrical releases to Universal Pictures in Australia.
The arrangement with Roadshow will terminate at the end of this year, Village Roadshow told the Asx today.
A break-up seemed unthinkable during previous regimes at the US studio, given the close business and personal relationships between Warner’s top brass and Village Roadshow’s Robert Kirby and Graham Burke.
However it’s been clear that WarnerMedia has been under new management, with no allegiances to long-serving executives or staff, or corporate memory, since parent company AT&T installed Jason Kilar as CEO.
In August there was a brutal cull at the senior level, including Jeffrey R. Schlesinger, president, Warner Bros. worldwide television distribution; Ron Sanders, president, worldwide theatrical distribution and home entertainment; Bob Greenblatt, chairman, WarnerMedia entertainment and direct-to-consumer; and Kevin Reilly, chief content officer,...

People who illegally stream or download content aren’t just hurting copyright holders: they’re also putting themselves at risk of fraud, viruses or exposing their personal details.
That’s the key message of Creative Content Australia’s (Cca) new consumer campaign, launched today, ‘Piracy. You’re Exposed‘. The industry body, whose focus is on copyright and the impact of piracy, has crafted a 30 second ad-spot for cinemas and TV, which highlights how often pirate websites are linked to malware that can steal personal information, like financial data and passwords, and facilitate identity theft.
The campaign is based on 2019 Cca research, which surveyed 1229 adults and 659 teens aged 12-17, and found that 62 per cent of adults and 75 per cent of persistent teen pirates experienced cyber breaches after accessing pirated content.

Clark Kirby and friend at Warner Bros. Movie World.
Settling into the role of CEO at Village Roadshow Ltd, Clark Kirby is energised about the potential for growth in multiple sectors including theme parks, exhibition and TV production.
“It’s an exciting year ahead,” says Kirby after succeeding Graham Burke, who stepped down at the end of December after 63 years with the company founded by Clark’s grandfather Roc Kirby but remains on the board.
“We have wonderful people working for our businesses who have an incredible amount of new ideas. A big part of my job is to create an environment for those ideas to flourish.”
It has been a smooth transition for Kirby, who continues to run the theme parks division, the biggest generator of revenues and profits. Kirby had worked closely with all the divisional CEOs for the past eight years and he spoke with Burke several times every day.

Upon the appointment of a new CEO, Burke will remain on the Vrl Board as a non-executive director, the company said today. Graham Burke, the Australian film industry veteran, is to step down from Village Roadshow by the end of the year. His move follows a period of feuding among the family owners, and significant corporate restructuring.
Describing the 2018-19 financial year, which runs to June, as a “reset and transition to FY20,” the group presented a financial result for the six months to December that it claimed showed recovery. Revenue from continuing operations increased by 3% from A$515 million in the equivalent half year, to $375 million (A$528 million). It incurred net losses of $250,000.
Village said that it will seek a new CEO to replace Burke, and that Burke will stay with the company until the end of 2019, as a non-executive director to ensure a smooth transition. It acknowledged that Clark Kirby, chairman and CEO of Village’s theme parks business, is to be considered as an internal candidate.

Three-time Tony Award nominee Andy Karl, last seen on Broadway in Groundhog Day, has been cast as the male lead in the upcoming Pretty Woman: The Musical. He’ll play Edward Lewis (Richard Gere in the 1990 movie) opposite Samantha Barks’ Vivian (the role that made a superstar of Julia Roberts).
Karl, who won an Olivier Award for the London production of Groundhog Day and also starred in Broadway’s Saturday Night Fever, replaces Steve Kazee, who left the Pretty Woman production for family reasons, according to producers.

The summer is here, and with the arrival of Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Jurassic World right around the corner, the heat is really kicking up. Still, no movie has had me as excited as Mad Max: Fury Road.
The trailers have been insane, and no movie in years has sold me so quickly with the theory of wild, adrenaline-rush like this one.
You’ve seen plenty in the trailers to get your mind racing, but the new set of images really give you a lot of information (I think) about how cool this really might be.
Just take a look at this one –
courtesy Warner Bros.
Sure, you’ve seen the idea in the trailer, but just the sheer insanity of everything in this image. If this movie doesn’t turn out to be the most fun of the year, that in itself will be a feat.

Roadshow Films will release nearly every major film before, simultaneously or close to the Us.
Village Roadshow co-chairman/ CEO Graham Burke announced the new strategy today, which starts with Christopher Nolan.s Interstellar on November 6 and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 on November 20, both one day before the Us.
Burke said the accelerated releases will help address .the insidious piracy that is endangering film production, theatres, TV and sports..
Addressing the government.s copyright forum earlier this month, he said the decision to hold back the release of The Lego Movie had been .one hell of a mistake. and pledged to move release dates up to coincide with the Us.
Burke has been lobbying the government to force ISPs to block piracy sites and to issue three warnings to subscribers who download content. After the third warning, the ISP should slow, or shape, the user.s internet service.

Far from being ripped off by the Us studios, Australians can watch new films online in High-Def more cheaply than anywhere in the developed world.
And the average cost of renting new release movies in Standard Def is the second cheapest at $4.25, just 32c more than in the Us.
That.s according to a new study by Ihs Technology commissioned by the Australian Home Entertainment Distributors Association.
Aheda commissioned the research several weeks ago to counter .general misinformation. about digital VOD prices, CEO Simon Bush tells If.
That was before consumer advocacy group Choice accused Foxtel of charging consumers far more to watch TV shows such as Orange is the New Black and The Walking Dead than Americans pay to see those shows on Netflix.

Making entertainment content available in Australia at the same time or shortly after its overseas release, and at a comparable price, will reduce piracy, according to Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull. .The greater the restrictions on the availability of content in Australia and the higher the cost relative to the rest of the world, the less public support there will be for whatever action is taken to sanction copyright infringers whether it is action by the ISP or a civil suit by the rights owners themselves,. Turnbull said on his website.
.If you make it hard and expensive to acquire content legally and at the same time it is easy and free to acquire it illegally and if the owners of that content are reluctant to take legal action against those who do acquire it illegally, well it.s pretty obvious, in the absence of any other sanction, that is going to incentivise copyright infringement.
