Total Film Magazine wants you to witness the badassery of Anya Taylor-Joy’s Furiosa for George Miller’s upcoming prequel with new covers for the entertainment publication. On the first Furiosa magazine cover, Taylor-Joy’s road warrior sports the latest in Wasteland fashion: tire tread armor, worn leather straps, and black grease paint covering the top half of her shaven skull. For the alternate cover, Furiosa evokes an unholy Wasteland clergy look with a red cloak, bandaged chest, fire-roasted pants, and a mechanical arm to help crush War Boys’ balls into dust.
Directed by Miller from a screenplay he wrote with Nico Lathouris, Furiosa has the following synopsis: As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by the Immortan Joe.

This article contains mild plot spoilers for George Miller’s Furiosa!
Director George Miller is continuing the Mad Max franchise with the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which is set to reach theatres on May 24th – and with that date just over a month away, the film got some promotion during the Warner Bros. presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.
Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, and George Miller took the stage during the Warner Bros. panel. Miller told the eager CinemaCon crowd that Furiosa takes place over 18 years, whereas Fury Road’s story lasted three days. Miller then quipped that if the apocalypse actually happened, Anya would be the one he’d want to hang out with as she has the rigor and commitment.
Speaking about Hemsworth, Miller said he couldn’t think of anyone to play Dementus, and he’d had the script for a long time.

It is a well-known fact that George Miller is one of Australia’s best directors and filmmakers. His best-known work is the Mad Max franchise, which starred with Mel Gibson in the titular role; he was later replaced by Tom Hardy in Fury Road, a movie that also introduced the character of Furiosa, initially played by Charlize Theron. Furiosa was such an amazing addition to the franchise that Miller decided to give her a standalone prequel movie, where Anya Taylor-Joy will be playing a younger version of the character.
Furiosa is set to arrive in theaters on May 23, 2024, in just a couple of months, and ahead of the movie’s premiere, Warner Bros. has just blessed us with another trailer for the movie, revealing more information about Furiosa’s past, as well as her conflict with Warlord Dementus, who is played by Chris Hemsworth. When director George Miller needed to fill the role of Immortan Joe in Mad Max: Fury Road, he turned to actor Hugh Keays-Byrne, who had previously played the villainous Toecutter in the original Mad Max. Sadly, Keays-Byrne passed away in 2020, before Miller could get the prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga into production – so in this movie, which is set to reach theatres on May 24, the role of Immortan Joe is being played by Lachy Hulme. Hulme’s casting in the role was confirmed by Empire, and they also scored a great quote from Hulme about the scope of the film. He told them Furiosa is “David Lean, but with motorbikes instead of camels. When you see 4,000 custom-made motorbikes come over a hill, you shit your pants.“
Hulme pulls double duty in the Furiosa, as he also plays a character called Rizzdale Pell, who is “one of the gang members...

You’ve got to live up to a name like Immortan Joe. And the villain in Mad Max: Fury Road did exactly that, cutting a mercurial, mesmerising, menacing figure in the Wasteland, ruling his War Boys with an iron fist, and barking out put-downs like “Mediocre!” with relish. Now, get ready to ride eternal, shiny and chrome, once more – Immortan Joe is back in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, ready to unleash more vehicular chaos. But until now, it’s been unknown who exactly would be stepping into the plastic-abs bodysuit and fearsome breathing mask this time around – the legendary Hugh Keays-Byrne, who played the role in Fury Road, passed away in 2020.
Empire can confirm that the role in Furiosa will be played by Lachy Hulme – a firm friend of filmmaker George Miller who now pulls double-duty in the prequel. Hulme was first cast as Rizzdale Pell, one of the...

Charlize Theron was hoping to lead “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” before even “Mad Max: Fury Road” started shooting. Didn’t work out that way.
According to director George Miller, Oscar winner Theron begged him to go into production on “Furiosa” before “Fury Road.”
“She said, ‘Please, George, can we make this first?'” Miller told Empire magazine. “It was the first time I realized that there’s something really strong in this story.”
“Furiosa” is set 15 years prior to “Fury Road,” which was released in 2015. Writer/director Miller revealed that the first iteration of the “Furiosa” script was penned as part of the character development process for “Fury Road.” Theron’s Furiosa was a war captain serving tyrant Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne), who later leads a coup by freeing the ruler’s top female breeders.

This summer’s Furiosa, starring Anya Taylor-Joy, has a story that spans 15 years, leading directly into Mad Max: Fury Road, says George Miller.
Given the truly awe-inspiring crashes and bangs director George Miller splashed across the screen in his pop-art masterpiece Mad Max: Fury Road, it’s hardly surprising that his prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, is among our most anticipated films of 2024.
In a new cover feature in the latest Empire magazine, Miller has contrasted his latest post-apocalyptic opus with 2015’s Fury Road. Where Fury Road took place over three days, Miller explained, Furiosa will span 15 years, following the earlier years of Furiosa.
“Fury Road, the story unfolds over three days and two nights,” Miller told Empire (which comes to us via World of Reel). “This film [Furiosa] follows the story that runs directly into Fury Road, for 15 years. It’s a different animal. It’s got many different locations.

Furiosa Trailer Breakdown: Witness Anya Taylor-Joy And Chris Hemsworth At The Start Of The Fury Road
What a day. What a lovely day! It's been eight years since George Miller unleashed the masterpiece that is "Mad Max: Fury Road" upon the world. It remains one of the best movies ever made (as selected by /Film), a visual spectacle the likes of which Hollywood just doesn't make anymore. Everything from the score to the costuming, the cinematography, and the VFX worked together to create a symphony of wind and fury unlike any other.
Now, Miller is ready to return to the wasteland, because the first trailer for "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" is here to remind us that nobody does it like George Miller. The preview doesn't show much, but like the first trailer for "Fury Road," it gives us a look at the prequel's stunning visuals, the vast and colorful world of the wasteland, and the batsh** insane action that Miller made his cast go through — somehow not killing everyone.

Nothing gold can stay, and to make room for everything new at Hulu in November, we have to say goodbye to dozens of the series and movies on the platform. The streamer will make room for its upcoming Christmas library by losing some of its horror-themed titles throughout the month, including “Stephen King's It,” most of its “Saw” franchise, and “Shaun Of The Dead.” Other major titles leaving the platform include Emma Stone’s breakthrough comedy “Easy A,” the Nora Ephron classic “Sleeping in Seattle,” and more.

I feel that one of the bigger misconceptions about action cinema is that it is all about the spectacle. The chases, the fights, the explosions, the stunts. They exist to be an adrenaline rush, and if you feel like turning your brain off at the door of the auditorium, feel free to do so. Sure, you could do that, and plenty of people have enjoyed action movies that way for decades upon decades. However, the cream that rises to the top doesn't adhere to this mentality. Story and character are as important in action pictures as they are in heartbreaking dramas.
Even the most rip-roaring spectaculars know this to be true, and few exhibit that better than George Miller's 2015 masterpiece "Mad Max: Fury Road." When we think of the movie, the first images we think about are most certainly the moments of true visual awe, be it Tom Hardy...

The Mad Max movie franchise, first created by George Miller and Byron Kennedy in 1979 with the initial movie of the same name, became a media sensation. The film series is set in post-apocalyptic Australia and follows the titular character Max Rockatansky (portrayed by Mel Gibson in 3 films) into action-packed adventures.
Later on, Tom Hardy took over as Max for 2015’s fourth installment – “Mad Max: Fury Road.”
The series chronicles the thrilling escapades of Rockatansky, a police officer in a dystopian Australia facing social disintegration due to war and depleting resources. Grief-stricken and enraged by the biker gang’s murder of his wife and child, Max embarks on a quest for vengeance.
As Australia rapidly plunges into barbarity with each passing day, he finds himself assisting small pockets of civilization – initially driven by self-interest but eventually out of compassion. Alone in the Wasteland, Max is determined to make that responsible pay for their heinous deed.

Looking at Nicholas Hoult's well-dressed foodie character in his latest film, the comedic thriller "The Menu," you wouldn't immediately compare him to his role as Nux, the surprisingly sweet war boy in George Miller's "Mad Max: Fury Road." But Hoult sees serious similarities between the two. In an interview with /Film's Jack Giroux, Hoult revealed that despite looking like two very different men, the characters still have a lot in common.
"The Menu" is a deliciously dark horror-comedy from director Mark Mylod, who has plenty of experience with razor-sharp tonal tightrope walks from directing episodes of the hit HBO series "Succession." The film centers around one of the most exclusive and expensive restaurants in the world, Hawthorne, located on a remote island. Charlize Theron’s Imperator Furiosa, a hardened war captain who rebels against the tyrannical Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne) to free his women captives alongside Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy), is a large part of what made 2015’s “Mad Max: Fury Road” a blockbuster juggernaut — now considered among viewers and critics alike to be one of the best action films of all time. It is hailed as one of the greatest action movies ever, but making Mad Max: Fury Road was far from easy. Charlize Theron, Tom Hardy, director George Miller and a huge cast of creatives recall what went down in the Namib desert
Plenty of movies claim to be mad and filled with fury, taking it to the max. Very few make good on that promise. The Mad Max family is currently mourning the loss of Hugh Keays-Byrne, who was a key part of the franchise for over 35 years after playing Toecutter in the classic 1979 original before donning the armor of Immortan Joe in Fury Road. Tributes have been pouring in following the 73 year-old’s passing, and George Miller has now revealed that he’ll look to honor his legacy in the upcoming prequel Furiosa.

“There are those people who completely fill the world when you’re with them. He was certainly one of those,” George Miller told IndieWire’s Eric Kohn about the late actor Hugh Keays-Byrne hours after his passing. Keays-Byrne, the Australian actor best known for playing the villain characters in two “Mad Max” movies, died December 2 at the age of 73. Miller cast the actor to play the evil Toecutter opposite Mel Gibson in the original 1979 “Mad Max” movie, then cast him again to play the villainous Immortan Joe in the 2015 sequel “Mad Max: Fury Road.”

Yesterday brought the sad news that Mad Max: Fury Road star Hugh Keays-Byrne had passed away at the age of 73. The veteran actor hadn’t been particularly active over the last few years, but it seems fitting his final big screen role would be as Immortan Joe in George Miller’s incredible blockbuster given his long association with the filmmaker that dates back to an appearance in the 1979 original as Toecutter, while he was also set to play Martian Manhunter in Miller’s Justice League: Mortal, one of the most famous movies never made.
Keays-Byrne amassed a huge number of credits throughout his career, but despite being a Shakespearean actor by trade, his most recognizable roles came in genre fare. As well as Mad Max, there was also sci-fi disaster pic The Chain Reaction, dystopian thriller The Blood of Heroes, literary adaptations Moby Dick and Journey to the Center of the Earth,...

Keays-Byrne, who died this week, will be remembered for his gnarly performances as Toecutter and Immortan Joe, but every role he took was a revelation
Hugh Keays-Byrne was one of those extraordinary screen presences who didn’t land nearly enough substantial roles, but absolutely astonished when entrusted with the spotlight. The great English-Australian actor, who died this week aged 73, was less a performer than a visceral, wall-rattling force who seemed to summon his own weather conditions. You watched the guy, slack-jawed and kind of terrorised, uncertain whether his performances should be studied in film school or analysed by the Bureau of Meteorology.

Hugh Keays-Byrne, who played two iconic villains in the “Mad Max” franchise, has died, his representative confirmed to Variety on Wednesday. He was 73.
Keays-Byrne played the antagonist Toecutter in the 1979 original “Mad Max” film by director George Miller, and he was brought back for the 2015 movie “Mad Max: Fury Road” to play the evil villain Immortan Joe.
Brian Trenchard-Smith, who directed Keays-Byrne in the 1975 film “The Man From Hong Kong,” shared on Facebook that he had died in a hospital on Tuesday.
“Hugh had a generous heart, offering a helping hand to people in need, or a place to stay to a homeless teenager. He cared about social justice and preserving the environment long before these issues became fashionable. His life was governed by his sense of the oneness of humanity. We will miss his example and his friendship,” Trenchard-Smith wrote.

Hugh Keays-Byrne, most known to modern audiences for his turn as the evil Immortan Joe in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, has passed away at the age of 73. The English-Australian actor led a long and illustrious career on the stage and screen, in both his two native nations and in Hollywood.
Movie fans will know that Keays-Byrne had a long-standing working relationship with director George Miller. Not only did he star as the main antagonist of Fury Road, but nearly 40 years prior, he appeared as the villain of the original Mad Max (1979), Toecutter. In between the two projects, Miller cast the actor as Martian Manhunter in his ultimately unmade Justice League Mortal movie and though we never got to see it, the lost DC film lives on in the memory of fans.

The true breakdown of society appears to have begun in Australia around 1979, when George Miller made this berserk extrapolation of every toxic futurist prediction on the books. Out on the open road the only thing saving society from horrifying motorized gang violence is a corps of equally crazed patrolmen in their interceptor vehicles. With this picture Mel Gibson went from zero to ninety on the star-meters, even though U.S. distribution fell to the failing American International Pictures. Kino gathers up the best existing extras, and includes audio mixes in two separate languages — incomprehensible Australian and marginally understandable Australian. With the non-stop action on screen, who cares?

Furiosa is set for a grandiose solo return to the big screen… just not Charlize Theron’s portrayal of the post-apocalyptic warrior woman who stole the show in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, according to franchise mastermind George Miller.
In a bit of news that essentially verifies what previous reports have come to accept, Miller, in an interview with The New York Times, confirms that his mooted prequel movie centered on Fury Road standout character Furiosa is in the works, having settled a highly-publicized legal dispute with Warner Bros. However, said sequel will not see a role reprisal by Theron. Thus, Miller’s revelation definitively quells the long-held rumor that the prequel project would utilize digital de-aging technology to make Theron about twenty years younger onscreen.
As Miller states of his nixing of the CGI idea:

George Miller’s Justice League Mortal is one of those films that I wish would have been made. I would have loved to see how it would have turned out!
We’ve got some new concept art for the film that has surfaced and it shows us early concept art of Armie Hammer’s Batman and Adam Brody ‘s Flash. It gives us more of an idea of what they were thinking in terms of character design. When previously talking about the Batsuit, Hammer revealed:

The tale of Justice League: Mortal is legendary amongst superhero film fans. Though DC lovers had to wait until 2017 to get a Justice League movie, they could’ve got one back in 2009 if Warner Bros.’ initial plans had gone through. Mad Max director George Miller was supposed to helm the all-star team-up film that would’ve beaten The Avengers to the punch by three years, but production issues ultimately stopped it from reaching cameras.
Over time, we’ve gotten some glimpses at how the characters could’ve appeared in the movie, such as Armie Hammer’s Batman, Megan Gale’s Wonder Woman and D.J. Cotrona’s Superman. However, we haven’t had a good look at what Hugh Keays-Byrne could’ve looked like as Martian Manhunter. Fan artist Spdrmnkyxxiii has now taken a stab at imagining what might’ve been though, creating a possible character design for J’onn J’onzz in Mortal.

Well worth the wait, Mad Max Fury Road, released last May, was pure dynamite, with enough wit and ingenuity to put all recent action films to shame. It richly deserved the six Oscars that it won and should have won the other four it was nominated for (especially Best Picture – Spotlight?!?!?!…..puh…leeeez!)

Flashback to 2007. In the midst of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, WB and DC were about to beat Marvel Studios to the punch. Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller had signed on to direct a Justice League film written by husband and wife duo Michele and Kieran Mulroney, subtitled Mortal.
Intended to be the start of a new franchise, the pic had even finalized its cast. D.J. Cotrona (Superman), Megan Gale (Wonder Woman), Common (John Stewart Aka Green Lantern), Adam Brody (Flash), Santiago Cabrera (Aquaman), Hugh Keays-Byrne (Martian Manhunter) and Armie Hammer (Batman) were all set to star, with production scheduled to take place in Australia.
Unfortunately, however, Miller’s superhero epic never made it to Sydney. The 2007-08 Writers Guild of America Strike and other troubles behind the scenes forced WB to abandon Justice League: Mortal and the rest, as they say, is history.

During the podcast, he talked about his time on Justice League Mortal and shared a couple cool sounding scenes involving Wonder Woman (Megan Gale). One of those scenes involves her big intro in the film and the other featured a brutal battle between her and Superman!
When talking about her introduction, he explained:
"The first time you see Wonder Woman - the opening scene on Themyscira. It’s just her on top of a steed and she about half a kilometer away from a minotaur.

Released to an almost euphoric reception back in the summer of 2015, Mad Max: Fury Road became something of an event and has become one of the great action films of the 21st century. Talk of a sequel has been mentioned ever since, but it may be the prequel that beats it to filming.
Speaking about the film and the prospects of a Furiosa-led prequel whilst promoting her new film Atomic Blonde, star Charlize Theron has been chatting to Variety about her excitement about potentially returning to the shaven-headed character and says that it may become a reality much quicker than expected.
In an interview with Variety, Theron said:
“I’d love to. There were three scripts. They were written as backstories to Max’s character and to Furiosa’s character. But at the end of the day, this thing lives and breathes with [director] George [Miller]. I think Warner Bros. knows that.

Many years ago, I once read in an old music book a simple truth that has stuck in my head ever since: a truly great song will still function even when stripped down to its basics. A soaring orchestral piece will still work even when played by a lone piano player; a catchy melody will sound appealing whether it's sung or whistled by a milkman.

Theoretically, the same should go for a great movie: whether it's told for $100,000 or $100m, the story beneath all the technical stuff should still function if it's strong enough. This leads us, in a round-about way,...

A colourless rendition of George Miller’s action symphony was rumoured back in 2015, but it wasn’t until the end of last year that it would become a reality. Now released in cinemas for one day only, and coming to Blu-ray soon after, the “Black & Chrome” edition – editorially untouched but carefully re-graded – is more than a simple twiddling of knobs.
Monochrome may seem like a strange choice for a sun-saturated epic so rich and, well, colourful in its depiction of desolation. And while it may not become the default viewing experience like, say, Frank Darabont’s drained version of The Mist, it is a fascinating new perspective. It is also a good excuse to re-watch – and re-examine the underlying themes of – the greatest action movie of the decade so far.

Witness! Warner Bros. has finally – finally – locked down plans to unveil the monochromatic cut of George Miller’s scintillating action opus, Mad Max: Fury Road. And it’s releasing sooner than you may think.
It’s a version that has seemingly been kicking around for months now, and has surely been one of the most requested cuts of Fury Road following its release. That, and a behind-the-scenes peek at the painstaking work that went in to creating those jaw-dropping action sequences.
If you’re a fan of the film, then you’re in luck, because today also heralds the arrival of what is arguably the best effects showcase of Mad Max: Fury Road to date, shedding light on the ways in which George Miller and his crack team of stunt coordinators orchestrated apocalyptic chaos out on that Fury Road.
As Coming Soon notes, there’s actually two Blu-ray releases in...

The long awaited black and chrome version of George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road finally has a release date. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has announced that they will be releasing the Mad Max: Fury Road Black & Chrome Edition on December 6th in a two-film collection that also includes the theatrical version of the film. It will also include a special introduction by Miller describing his vision for the film. I'm excited about watching this version of the film because Miller says it's the best version of it. When previously talking about his black and white vision of the film, he said:
"One thing I’ve noticed is that the default position for everyone is to de-saturate post-apocalyptic movies. There’s only two ways to go, make them black and white — the best version of this movie is black and white, but people reserve that for art movies now. The...
