Emma Thompson has said she was “utterly, utterly blind” to the fact Kenneth Branagh was having an affair with Helena Bonham Carter.
Thompson, 63, and Branagh, 61, met in 1987 when filming the series Fortunes of War. They were married two years later in 1989.
The couple divorced in 1995. It emerged that Branagh had been having an affair with Harry Potter star Helena Bonham Carter, 56, who he had starred opposite in his 1994 film Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.
In an interview with The New Yorker, Thompson reflected on the filming of Sense and Sensibility, for which she won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.
While shooting the film in 1995, the actor’s marriage to Branagh had ended. They had not yet made news of their split public.
The New Yorker writer states that Thompson was “humiliated, in part by her own stupidity” by the affair Branagh had with Carter.

They say time heals all wounds, and that's certainly the case for Emma Thompson.
In the '90s, the Oscar winner was part of a British celerity power couple with actor/director Kenneth Branagh. But they divorced in 1995 in large part due to his affair with Helena Bonham Carter, whom Branagh met on the set of "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein."
Thompson opened up about the affair and the aftermath for the first time to the U.K.'s Sunday Times (via Us Weekly), saying that it's "all blood under the bridge. You can't hold on to anything like that. I just think ... pfft."
At the time, Thompson and Branagh said their work demands kept them apart, but the rumors that he'd hooked up with Carter were confirmed when they went public with their relationship, which lasted until 1999.
Since then, all parties have moved on: Thompson is married to actor/producer Greg Wise...

Kenneth Branagh was previously nominated for Oscars for Henry V (1989) as Best Actor and Best Director, for the live-action short film Swan Song (1992), and for the adapted screenplay of Hamlet (1995), which he also directed/starred in, alongside Julie Christie and Kate Winslet. Perhaps not coincidentally, Laurence Olivier was a Best Actor nominee for Henry V (1946) and won the Best Actor Oscar for Hamlet (1948), both of which Olivier also directed. Branagh 2012 competitors were Ingmar Bergman veteran Max von Sydow...

Kenneth Branagh has praised the looks and acting skills of Chris Hemsworth, who starred in his Thor movie, and admitted he'd never dreamed he would direct a Hollywood blockbuster.
The 2011 film was based on Marvel's superhero version of the Norse thunder god and Branagh said he had long been a fan of the comic book.
Speaking on The Graham Norton Show, the filmmaker said that when he was a young actor, he'd never imagined he would end up being involved in such a big-budget box office smash.
He said: "I certainly used to read that comic when I was a kid so I knew that was always true about my feeling for it, but I think that for me - a working-class lad from Belfast - just to even be an actor was already such an amazing kind of leap of faith."

At the helm of Marvel's new superhero film Thor - now at the top of the UK box office and just getting a Us release - is Kenneth Branagh.
Branagh readily admits the sheer scale of the movie both scared and excited him. His response was to ensure this epic adventure of regal gods still had a strong sense of humanity.
"I definitely wanted to bring the story to earth," says Branagh, a decision which saw the cast and crew locate to New Mexico.
He also felt it was crucial to bring humour and a lightness of tone. "We obviously took the job of trying to produce this piece of entertainment as seriously as possible, but we didn't want the film to take itself too seriously," he explained.
"We wanted the characters to have a sort of twinkle in their eye but not to mock them, so it was a...

British screen star Kenneth Branagh has secretly wed girlfriend Lindsay Brunnock. The couple exchanged vows at a "small, private" ceremony at the weekend, according to the Much Ado About Nothing star's publicist. He and his new bride are now enjoying their honeymoon at an undisclosed location. Branagh started dating art director Brunnock two years ago on the set of the Shackleton - a drama for British TV network Channel 4. It is the second marriage for Branagh - his first, to actress Emma Thompson, ended in 1996. He then had a long romance with his Frankenstein co-star Helena Bonham Carter, but they split in 1999.
