There are certain things that nobody wants to come across on a plane. Liam Neeson. Monkey-fighting snakes. Ian Brown on a bad day. And in this post-9/11 world, we tend to be pretty sheltered from anything dangerous, weird or Mancunia ending up sandwiched between the overhead luggage or squeezed beneath the tray table. Thanks to the brave men and women of the Transport Security Administration – and their international equivalents – you won’t be getting anything dodgy that’s made of metal, is flammable, or a liquids above 100ml. Or honey, which we all know is the most dangerous sandwich spread.
At this point you’d think the rules about what you can and can’t take on a commercial airliner would be pretty well known to people, especially since most of them are pretty common sense. Weapons? Explosives? Yeah, it makes sense that we’re not allowed them with our carry-on.

Until inimitable singer Ian Brown, guitar god John Squire, affable bassist Mani, and long-mia drummer Reni congregated in a London hotel in October 2011 before a throng of world press, Manchester’s Stone Roses seemed as unlikely a reunion candidate as the Smiths, the Jam, Talking Heads, and the Beatles. (Yes, I’m aware of the inherent difficulties in the latter reformation.) [...]...

“It's inevitable really,” murmurs Ian Brown in 1989 about the chances of his band's future success. Three weeks later, the Stone Roses had changed the pop landscape. Shane Meadows makes deft use of old footage (the Spike Island gig, the early, awkward interviews) in his gushing document of the Manchester band's unexpected return last year. Don't expect a warts and all hatchet job here – drummer Reni's storm out in Amsterdam isn't sufficiently documented, for instance. It's a failing, but Meadows' film aims to eulogise and, on that level, it succeeds.

Of the many little things in the "Star Wars" universe that fans have latched onto, the Mos Eisley Cantina from the first "Star Wars" maybe one of the most enduring. Granted, a lot happened there. It's where Han Solo shot Greedo, where Han Solo and Chewbecca are first introduced and Ponda Baba gets his arm sliced off by Luke Skywalker. But even with all of that, the bizarre atmosphere and futuristic space jazz captured the imagination of diehard and casual fans alike, with that cantina continually referenced in pop culture, perhaps most notably a few years ago in an Adidas spot featuring Daft Punk, Noel Gallagher, Ciara, Ian Brown of the Stone Roses, David Beckham, Jay Baruchel and Snoop Dog (watch it here). Well, it has been revisited again. Jason Schwartzman, Patton Oswalt and Billy Dee Williams are among the latest patrons of the cantina, in a four minute promotional...

Director: Mat Whitecross; Screenwriter Chris Coghill; Starring: Elliott Tittensor, Nico Mirallegro, Jordan Murphy, Adam Long, Emilia Clarke; Running time: 105 mins; Certificate: 15
Earlier this month, Shane Meadows's heartfelt documentary Made of Stone bucked expectations by focusing as much on the fans in the ticket queue as on the Stone Roses themselves, and emerged as more an affectionate reminiscence than a journalistic document. Mat Whitecross's 1990-set Spike Island makes no claims to be documenting anything, except for a certain kind of devoted teenage fandom, and while it's far from revolutionary as a coming-of-age story, its game young cast elevate even the clichés.
Manc teens Tits (Matthew McNulty) and Dodge (Nico Mirallegro) are lead singer and guitarist, standing in for Ian Brown and John Squire in an indie band that might as well be a straight-up Roses tribute act, but instead call themselves Shadowcatcher. They're hellbent on getting to Spike Island,...

Nico Mirallegro will be familiar to TV fans thanks to roles in Mad Fat Diary and The Village, but the Manchester-born actor is switching his attention to the big screen this week with the release of Brit coming-of-age film Spike Island. Set around The Stone Roses's now-famous 1990 concert, the film tracks four friends in fictional band Shadowcaster as they experience love, heartbreak and the joys of rock 'n' roll.
Digital Spy sat down with Mirallegro to talk about the Roses resurrection, Spike Island and what he thought about Shane Meadows's documentary Made of Stone.

Warm and energetic, Shane Meadows's love letter to the Stone Roses may be his best film so far
They're made of something much more fragile than that. The unfakeable warmth of fan-love pulses out of this dynamic documentary by Shane Meadows, about the 2012 reunion of the Stone Roses, the legendary band whose first album triggered the Manchester wave; yet while 90s Cool Britannia got into its euphoric groove, the Stone Roses themselves famously retreated into legal wrangling, creative inertia and weird Salingeresque reclusiveness, one hidden benefit of which was that they were never tempted, like Noel Gallagher, to commit themselves to endorsing Tony Blair.
In its sheer warmth, energy and sense of purpose, this film could be Meadows's best so far. Made of Stone comes in three acts: a triumphant free gig for echt fans (they need to bring CD inserts or other paraphernalia to get tickets) at Warrington's...

"You can't repeat the past," Nick Carraway ventures in one of the year's other big movies, The Great Gatsby. "Can't repeat the past?" Gatsby cries incredulously. "Why of course you can!" With Made of Stone, director Shane Meadows suggests that maybe - just maybe - it's actually possible.
Back in 1990, Shane had a ticket for The Stone Roses at Spike Island - the first time the Uttoxeter lad would have seen his favourite band. A bad acid trip the night before meant that he gave the ticket away and missed out. Fast forward two decades and singer Ian Brown drops him a line. He and guitarist John Squire have kissed and made up, along with drummer Reni and bassist Mani, and does he fancy bringing a camera along?

There is way more of the Coachella Valley Arts and Music Festival than any one person could take in, so even people who are there have probably missed a fair bit of it. Alas, most of us couldn't make it to Indio in the first place, nor do we want to sit around watching all the fun we're not having online. But, with the event well into the third and final day of its first weekend, the hard-working Coachella press corps has produced enough material to give us a good sense of the weekend's highlights so far, without the sunburn, hangover, or YouTube squint. Relatively few people adored The Stone Roses, who headlined Friday night, with just 5,000 people clustering around the stage in a field meant to hold tens of thousands, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which blamed the ambivalence on the band's U.S. obscurity and front-man Ian Brown...

★★☆☆☆ The 90s were great, weren't they? You had Oasis, Blur, Pulp, and of course The Stone Roses, who are given near mythical status in Mat Whitecross' love letter to band frontman Ian Brown, in Spike Island (2012). A group of lads from Manchester spend their days rehearsing together in their unsigned band, covering their school in graffiti and listening to their favourite band, The Stone Roses. When they hear that their guitar heroes are performing on Spike Island, the boys try everything in their power to get into the gig.

Charming scallywags and great music can often mean a great night at the cinema, but the second narrative feature from Mat Whitecross (Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll) feels undernourished and overly indebted to the subjects of its inspiration; The Stone Roses. In Manchester in the Summer of 1990, four schoolmates, affectionately referred to as Tits, Dodge, Zippy and Little Gaz, are endlessly devoted to the Roses, and have become obsessed with obtaining tickets to their huge gig in the Mersey Estuary at Spike Island. Hoping that they can get a demo tape of their four-piece outfit, Shadow Caster, into the hands of Roses’ frontman Ian Brown, while weathering the usual teenage quandaries, Spike Island is a mixture of Stone Roses fandom and coming-of-age tropes.

The date is 18th October 2011. The time is 3:08pm and this particular music fan is frantically tapping away at a keyboard hoping to find information on the biggest music announcement of this, and possibly any other, decade. A posted link on a little known music blog takes me to a live feed of a press conference inside the function room of the London Soho Hotel. I had been hoping for this day for most of my adult life – a day that, on several occasions during this time, looked as though it might never happen. And then it appears on the screen, as quick as you like: the image the world wanted to see. Gary ‘Mani’ Mountfield, Alan ‘Reni’ Wren, Ian Brown and John Squire, sat side by side together, in the same room looking extremely happy and ready to take on the world again.

The expectation surrounding The Stone Roses' trilogy of homecoming shows at Heaton Park this weekend has been overwhelming. Did the band manage to meet them? Here's what the some of the press had to say. Rob Hughes, The Independent
"Forget all that guff about band reunions being the preserve of the desperate and the dated. The Stone Roses still sound vital, reassuringly cocky and strangely relevant. Even the staunchest fan may have harboured reservations about their ability to relight the glory days, let alone party like it's 1989. But, tonight at least, they've exceeded all expectations." The group hold the top three positions with 'Shine', 'Rule the World' and 'Patience', and also account for 25% of the top 20. Music licensing company Ppl compiled the list based on music played on TV, radio and online, along with tracks played in public places (such as gyms, ships and pubs). Bee Gees, Oasis and Simply Red also feature in the list, along with The Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown. However, there are no entries for The Stone Roses themselves, or the likes of Happy Mondays or New Order. Take That's Gary Barlow recently announced plans to compose a song with Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber for The Queen's Diamond Jubilee. The Ppl top 20 Manchester (more)...

The Stone Roses singer Ian Brown has been banned from driving. The Waterfall singer was caught speeding at 93 miles per hour (mph) while in a 40mph roadwork zone near Stafford while on his way to his home in Cheshire, in North West England in October 2010. The 48-year-old musician - who was driving his £40,000 Lexus car - was banned for three months by a judge as he had been caught exceeding the speed limit three times in three years. Ian Brown will reportedly be banned from driving this week after pleading guilty to a speeding charge. The Stone Roses singer, who did not appear at Stoke Magistrates Court last Thursday, was told he faced disqualification after being caught driving his Lexus at 93mph in a 40mph zone in October last year. The Mirror reports that Judge David Taylor was "angered" by the star for changing his plea to guilty at the last minute, adding: "This will lead to disqualification." Brown will be formally sentenced on November 24. Last month, the singer (more)...

David Beckham reportedly played a key role in reuniting The Stone Roses. The footballer, who is a huge fan of the Manchester band, repeatedly attempted to convince bassist Mani and singer Ian Brown to pursue a reunion, according to The Sun. A source told the tabloid: "David has always been a huge Stone Roses fan. You've got to remember he was a young lad in Manchester when The Roses were a big deal. "It was impossible to live there without being into the band. Ian and Mani are Reds through and through so they all knew each other a bit back in the day." They continued: "David heard there was a chance the ice was thawing between Ian and guitarist John Squire and he got involved. "He told Mani in no uncertain terms he simply had to get the band back together. (more)...

This Is England director may shoot a film about the band's comeback
Shane Meadows may direct a film documenting the return of the Stone Roses.
The director of This is England was filming at the press conference last week at which band members Ian Brown, John Squire, Gary "Mani" Mounfield and Alan "Reni" Wren announced that they would reform for three sold-out shows – the band's first in 15 years – to be held in Manchester's Heaton Park next summer.
Mark Herbert, Meadows's long-term producer at Warp Films – the company behind Meadows's Dead Man's Shoes and Le Donk & Scor-zay-zee - took to Twitter to respond to the rumours.
"We filmed the press conference last week but until we finish post on [Meadows TV spin-off] This is England 88 in Dec nothing will be finalised," he said. "We just jumped at chance to film the announcement. Exciting tho!"
The band have yet to comment on any plans to film the reunion.

- The Guardian - Film News
It’s being reported by The Independent that Shane Meadows, best known for his 2006 drama This is England, will capitalize on the heavily-anticipated reunion of The Stone Roses for his next film: a documentary about this very event. Details on what it will actually entail are a little slim at the moment, though The Guardian say that the filmmaker has the task of “film[ing] Ian Brown, John Squire, Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield and Alan ‘Reni’ Wren as they rehearse for three sold-out shows – the band’s first in 15 years – to be held in Manchester’s Heaton Park next summer.” The footage from the actual concerts may or may not be incorporated, but it would be an odd omission nonetheless.
However, this isn’t a sure thing; Warp Films have come on as producers, but the band hasn’t decided if they’ll be a part of this project — they’ll do...

After an acrimonious decade or so, '90s indie kings The Stone Roses have put aside their differences and announced a series of comeback gigs. There was a certain amount of speculation last week as to why Shane Meadows was lurking at the press conference, but now we know: Meadows has been commissioned to make a film about the Stone Roses' return. He's going to show us a vision, a wild apparition, that sings to the depths of our souls. Or something. For our younger readers, The Stone Roses - singer Ian Brown, guitar hero John Squire, bassist Mani and drummer Reni - slouched to the top of the indie charts in the late '80s, with a self-titled debut album and infectiously groovy singles like Elephant Stone, She Bangs the Drums, and the quintessential Fool's Gold. They were at the vanguard of Madchester, although a bitter dispute with their...

Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown has avoided a driving ban after being caught speeding. The 'Fool's Gold' singer was clocked at 105mph in his Lexus on the M6 in April earlier this year. His lawyer argued that any ban would cause "insurmountable" problems for his family due to his recent reformation with The Stone Roses. With rehearsals taking place at "a remote and secret location", lawyer Nick Freeman said that Brown would struggle to see his 11-year-old son, who lives in London with his mother. (more)...
