James Bond Encyclopedia

By John Cork and Collin Stutz

334 Pages, Dk Publishing, $40

Nobody does it better. Dk Publishing continues to put out the best assortment of visual reference books on pop culture and as we near the holidays, they keep pumping out one must have collection after another.

Few literary figures have endured changing eras and tastes likes Ian Fleming’s spy, James Bond. Fleming created the spy in the 1950s and continued his exploits through the dozen novels and nine short stories before his death in 1964. He got to see his creation catch the attention of a world made uncomfortable by the Cold War, giving them a clear cut hero to root for as he traveled the world and dispatched the Red Menace in all its guises.

Bond has endured despite the constant change in performer, indelibly begun by Sean Connery and carried through by George Lazenby, Roger Moore, »

Updated: Fox Not Acquiring Distribution Rights for James Bond Franchise

6 October 2009 11:20 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Update [October 6 @ 1:30p Cst]: Film School Rejects has been contacted directly by MGM, who says that the report that Fox will be taking over distribution of the Bond franchise is incorrect. According to an official source, MGM owns the James Bond franchise and will announce the release date and distribution strategy in due time. The rights go to Fox, 20th Century Fox. Our good friends over at We Are Movie Geeks have what could very well be a very big scoop this evening, assuming of course, that it turns out to be true. As you might have heard, MGM is in a bit of financial trouble, securing support from Jp Morgan to defer the interest payments on its massive debt load for the next three years in order to maintain a stake in The Hobbit, which as THR reported yesterday, is still a go for director Guillermo Del Toro and producer Peter Jackson. The Blu-Ray Review: From Russia With Love (1963)

26 August 2009 4:13 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Colin reviews the second James Bond film in the series.

For reasons that seem absolutely mystifying to me now, I used to dislike 1963's From Russia With Love, the second James Bond film. I always liked its predecessor, 1962's Dr. No, and I absolutely adored the follow-up, 1964's Goldfinger.

For reasons unknown, I just couldn't get into Russia. I vaguely recall an impression that it was dull and slow moving, but now that I've seen it again, I think I must have watched it on Opposite Day, for the truth of the matter is quite different from my old perception.

In fact, I now feel that Russia is clearly one of the best Bond films. It surpasses Dr. No and definitely rivals Goldfinger and 1965's Thunderball. Man, what was I thinking when I disliked this movie? I guess I'm not infallible after all!

In any case, I find Russia to »

Bond Producers Team with Sony on New Spy Movie and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Remake

15 April 2009 9:20 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Looks like Eon Productions are aiming to "diversify their portfolio" a little bit in the near future, by producing something other than a James Bond film. However, that's not to say they're straying very far from familiar territory either. Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli are teaming up with Sony for an adaptation of Mark Burnell's upcoming novel Remote Control, which centers on (surprise, surprise) a British intelligence agent "who goes on the run with a former lover when he gets caught up in a conspiracy to destabilize the Chinese economy". Burnell has previously written a number of other espionage-steeped thrillers including The Rhythm Section, which was optioned by New Line in 2005 but currently remains unproduced. In addition, The Hollywood Reporter [1] mentions in passing that they are also working on a remake of the 1968 family musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, which follows the adventures of a family and their magical flying car. »

Eon Productions To Team With Sony On New Non-james Bond Thriller

15 April 2009 4:01 AM, PDT | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

Barbara BroccoliBy Lee Pfeiffer

For the first time since Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in 1968, the James Bond producers will be developing a new non-007 film property. Sony will team with Eon producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli to bring the forthcoming thriller Remote Control to the screen. The book by Mark Burnell centers on a British corporate intelligence analyst who uncovers a plot to undermine the Chinese economy. The premise certainly goes against the grain of popular opinion, given China's tendency to manipulate its currency to undermine other nation's currencies. Although Barbara Broccoli personally produced the acclaimed 1990s TV movie Crime of the Century, this marks the first non-Bond project she is teaming on with Wilson since they took control of the 007 franchise from their father Cubby Broccoli in 1994. Eon also has a long-rumored remake of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang planned for the big screen. That 1968 pic was the »

Bradford International Film Festival Diary Day 1: Michael G. Wilson Gives A Master Class On James Bond Movies

26 March 2009 7:02 AM, PDT | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

Cinema Retro publishers Lee Pfeiffer and Dave Worrall attended the Bradford International Film Festival in Bradford, England last week. Here is Lee Pfeiffer's first report:

For many years, we had heard about the exciting events that take place at the annual Bradford International Film Festival. The festival is held at the National Media Museum, which is a state-of-the-art showcase for the history of British film, TV, photography and new media. Over the last fifteen years, the festival has hosted world premieres, classic film screenings and internationally acclaimed interview sessions with actors and filmmakers. Although the festival has proven to be a popular attraction, Bradford's distance from London (several hours north) has kept many movie fans from attending. As most of our dealings are generally in London, we fall into that category ourselves. However, we learned that passing up on this festival is a major faux pas on behalf of any serious movie lover. »

By Tom Lisanti

“Hi, I’m Plenty,” said Lana Wood to Sean Connery’s James Bond at the gaming tables of Las Vegas in Diamonds Are Forever (1971).  “Plenty O’Toole.”  Glancing at her cleavage, Bond wittily deadpanned, “But of course you are.”  With this small exchange audiences were introduced to one of the most popular Bond girls to ever hit the screen.  As Plenty, Lana Wood was finally able to step out of the shadow of her sister Natalie Wood.  On screen for only a few scenes, she almost steals the movie with her amusing performance and remains forever remembered for this role.  “Isn’t that bizarre,” exclaims Wood with a laugh.  “I’m only in the movie for three minutes!

Lana Wood was born Svetlana Zacharenko Gurdin in Santa Monica, California.  She followed her older sister into the acting profession and »
