He was a World War I veteran (achieved rank of 2nd Lieutenant). He was
also an accomplished artist and architect.
His father, William Lynton Brent, was a banker and civic leader in Los Angeles. He was responsible for the development of the wealthy L.A. enclave of Brentwood, which was named after him.
