It’s possible that this appallingly awful excuse for a raunchy comedy is meant to be satirical, but I suspect it’s merely shockingly incompetent, even grading on the raunchy-comedy curve. Not that it would have worked as satire, either, but the notion makes it slightly easier to explain away what appears to be the concept here: If only we were all as rude, crude, lewd, and selfish as super car salesman Don Ready (Jeremy Piven [RocknRolla], who looks embarrassed to be here, as well he should), America would be great again. Or else it’s the sleazy bigotry and uncontrollable horniness of America that has always made the nation great; the scrawlers of the “script” (Andy Stock and Rick Stempson, who actually put their names to their only previous produced work, the direct-to-dvd Balls Out: Gary the Tennis Coach) don’t seem to know what they want to say, except »

If you're Adam McKay, you might just love this interview. However, if you're Neal Brennan, you're going to find this interview incredibly boring. If you're not either of these two men, I have no idea what you'll think. I say this because Brennan apparently doesn't like reading other people having fun, and, to be fair, the first four minutes of our conversation were overpowered by a looming discussion of Walt Whitman. For some reason. So as a quick caution to you, dear reader, if you have a problem listening to two creative comedians and one idiot interviewer talk about how flaming a civil war-era poet and thinker was, I'd skip down a few lines and start there. I include a safety page-break so you'll know where the Whitman stuff ends. Also as a caution, we talk about details from the movie, so if you're really sensitive about spoilers, you may want to avoid. Also »

Its the final stretch folks, the end of the summer season, and every one of the films that jump out in August tries to walk out over the others. The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard achieves a quick advantage with the look of its comedic cast. Despite having that kind of star power, however, this flick roars along for the first hour but with no pit stop runs itself right into a ditch by the third act.
Jeremy Piven stars as Don Ready, the sharp-tongued egotistical liquidator who sells cars with the help of his all-star team: quick-thinking Jibby (Ving Rhames), the charismatic Brent (David Koechner) and the seductive Babs (Kathryn Hahn). They get the call from failing used car owner Ben Selleck (James Brolin), who has to rally to sell off all the cars on his lot during a Fourth of July sale in order to stay afloat. Right out of the lot, »

The Goods: Live Hard. Sell Hard.
Directed by: Neal Brennan
Cast: Jeremy Piven, Ed Helms, Ving Rhames, James Brolin, David Koechner, Kathryn Hahn, Alan Thicke
Running Time: 1 hr 30 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: August 14, 2009
Plot: A notorious fast-talking traveling salesman (Piven) must help an auto lot sell their cars before they are bought out by their competitor.
Who’s It For? As much as the film is profane, its tired humor would fit better in a PG-13 arena for those who consider jokes about men hitting on other men to still be funny. But considering how bad this movie is, The Goods probably won’t be enjoyed by any patron over the age of 17 unless they enter with bottom-dollar expectations.
Expectations: Even after seeing the film’s not so funny preview constantly at the movies this summer, there were still hopes this would be a breezy mid-August comedy with odd, »

The Goods: Live Hard. Sell Hard.
Starring Jeremy Piven, Ving Rhames, Ed Helms, and James Brolin
Directed by Neal Brennan
Rated R
Star vehicles, by definition, depend on the appeal of their stars. So, before you pay to see The Goods: Live Hard. Sell Hard., you should ask yourself how much you like Jeremy Piven. The Entourage Emmy winner is a used car salesman savant named Don Ready. He's as abrasive like Piven's Ari Gold, only in worse clothes. But if this is all Piven's got, haven't we seen it already?
Unfortunately, even though there's a good cast of likely and unlikely comic heroes mingling the used car lot, Piven gets most of the funny. And that's where this one bottlenecks.
It's not that Piven isn't funny or can't be funny, but in The Goods, it's one note over and over again. That note isn't all that funny to begin with, »

Our thoughts: Jeremy Piven’s got the goods and delivers tons of big-screen fun in Neal Brennan’s “The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard,” a surprisingly amusing comedy about an eccentric salesman who heads out to save a failing car dealership and ends up saving himself in the process. The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard, the feature directorial debut of Chappelle’s Show co-creator Neal Brennan, casts Jeremy Piven as the head of a traveling crew of used-car salespeople. Mercenaries of the trade, they travel from town to town helping dealers clear their lots, using whatever sleazy means they deem necessary to make a sale. Then they pack their bags and move on, leaving a lot of unsatisfied customers in their wake. By the film’s final scene, the plot has started to feel self-referential. Piven leads an ensemble cast of funny people—David Koechner, Rob Riggle, and Tony ... »

First of, have I told you how much I love this film? It's Super-funny! But, the greatest comedies have underlying tones of despair, and the characters in "The Goods" certainly have lots of those, hence, the funnies :happy
Make it the super funnies!
From the folks who gave us "Talladega Nights" and "Stepbrothers," "The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard" is one of the best comedies of the summer, perhaps the year!
Directed by Neil Brennan from the script by Andy Stock and Rick Stempson, this film ain't a clunker! Paramount has great timing with the whole Cash for Clunkers program.
You'll find a new, perhaps, respect for used car salesman! "The Goods" opens this Friday, Aug. 14th, so don't miss it!
So I attended the press junket for "The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard" and sat down with the cast. Here they are (click on pictures to see video): »

"Bandslam"
Despite the odd detour to pen such fare as the unpleasant 1993 remake of "The Vanishing," actor-turned-writer/director Todd Graff has returned time and again to themes of ambitious young performers struggling for recognition. With his follow-up to 2003's "Camp," he offers up a plush, pristinely PG tale of a gaggle of Texas high school misfits who congregate under the believe-in-yourself banner to put together a fledgling rock band. "High School Musical" star Vanessa Hudgens co-stars as Sa5m (the 5 is silent), the object of affection for wannabe rock star Will (Gaelan Connell). Aly Michalka, Charlie Saxton and Ryan Donowho fill out the "Breakfast Club"-esque supporting roles.
Opens wide.

Another red band trailer for "The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard" has made its way out. Debuted via Funny or Die, this latest sneak peek at the comedy is relatively shorter than the first red band trailer released months before. Though so, it still manages to let out a number of never-before-seen footage from the film.
Contrary to the previous trailer which focuses on introducing Jeremy Piven's character Don Ready, this new one highlights on how Ready psyches up his sales team to turn a failing auto dealership's Fourth of July sale into major profitable event. The restricted promo video also gives out more on the dinner table scene where Ready tells his ragtag crew what they should prepare for the next day.

I've seen a few commercials over the past two weeks or so for The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard, which stars Jeremy Piven as a salesman of a different breed. His name is Don Ready and as the title suggests, he is neither easygoing or soft.
The Goods is directed by Neal Brennan, who co-wrote Half-Baked. That's either a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your perception. I hearken back to the underappreciated Used Cars from 1980 (from Robert Zemeckis, incidentally), and while this looks like it could be much funnier than that, it's still a worthy goal in the pre-owned vehicle sub-genre, in my opinion.
There's a new Red Band trailer over at Funny or Die, which figures, since The Goods is produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay: »
