Star Trek (2009) Blu-ray Review

6 November 2009 10:56 PM, PST | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Space. The Final Frontier. A place few were willing to venture with the last two Star Trek: The Next Generation helmed films. On virtual life support, J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot collaborators reinvented the iconic franchise into something hardened Star Trek fans and casual moviegoers without an ounce of prior interest in the series could equally digest and enjoy. His efforts carried Star Trek into a new frontier of success and riches at the 2009 box office, to a place where Paramount's treatment of the Blu-ray Disc release should . and marvelously does - fall into the esteemed category of exemplary.

Star Trek's reboot begins with a huge bang, a knockout prologue that chronicles the birth of James T. Kirk and the death of his father, a Starship Captain (for twelve minutes), all during a surprise attack by a renegade Romulan Nero (Eric Bana). Flash forward a quarter of a »

Wolverines!: Red Dawn Remake to Destroy Detroit

5 November 2009 12:03 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Josh Hutcherson spoke to MTV about his latest acting gig, the remake of 1984's Red Dawn. Hutcherson claims they "blew up all of downtown Detroit last week."

We shot a scene where where we blew the face off this giant building. It was a giant, probably 200-foot high mushroom cloud of flames engulfing downtown Detroit! That was really cool.

The original Red Dawn was also violent, despite having a young cast including Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen, and Lea Thompson. Hutcherson plays a character "based on C. Thomas Howell's character, Robert" that is "sort of a tech guy" that, by the end of the movie, becomes "a total warrior, drinking blood from the animals and going crazy." Chris Hemsworth, Josh Peck, and Isabel Lucas round out the cast.

The experience is clearly one that Hutcherson is enjoying.

Everybody's loving it and loving the new story line. We've changed up quite a bit of stuff. »

Star Wars The Clone Wars: Season One Blu-ray Review

3 November 2009 12:13 PM, PST | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

As the Star Wars prequel trilogy unfolded it became painfully clear that the Clone Wars emotionally alluded to by Ben Kenobi in A New Hope would not be the focus. The narrative chosen by George Lucas was a major blow to scores of adults who waited decades to see insinuated epic battles unfold only to be given glimpses of a galaxy-wide war through a short montage of Jedi being purged and a blink-and-you'll-miss-it skirmish pitting Wookies and Clones against droids.

The exclusion of the Clone Wars in the Star Wars prequels opened the door for spin-off alternative forms of entertainment to delve deeper into the world of Clones, Jedi, politics and the Separatist forces. After a short test of anime-influenced Clone Wars shorts on the Cartoon Network, LucasFilm embarked on a new CGI animated show that will cover the Clone Wars slipped over between episodes II and III of the live-action films. »

DJ Hero Review: Pump Up the Volume

3 November 2009 11:59 AM, PST | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

For my money the whole idea of Guitar Hero and its clones has begun to grow stale. Sure there is still fun in jamming with buds in search of the elusive finger mangling perfect score. But little surprise comes the way of new songs released since odds are you have heard them prior to playing the game in one of its many incarnations.

Rather than endlessly spew out new bands and tracks for slightly tweaked new versions of Guitar Hero with no alternatives, Activision has "spun" the music gaming genre in a similar yet remarkably fresh direction with DJ Hero for Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii. The over 90 song mixes are, for most people such as me, entirely new. The controller is unique, slick and responsive. Most importantly, the desire to keep playing is unrelenting.

Packaged in a box about half the size of Guitar Hero, DJ Hero comes with »

Breaking Down the Nintendo Wii 2 with Blu-ray Rumor

29 October 2009 12:27 PM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

The launch of PS3 Slim in September forcibly pushed Nintendo Wii from its comfortable top-selling perch. What was once the darling of the economically viable console world became far less relevant in an instant.

Nintendo is forced to accept a future in as early as 2010 where Microsoft and Sony could take a huge bite out of Nintendo's base by releasing their in-development motion control systems for Xbox 360 and PS3 respectively. When this happens, the playing field will be more level from a functionality standpoint yet favor the high definition consoles capable of outputting more complex and cutting edge games.

The brass at Nintendo have not been shy about talking about exploring high definition support for a future Wii console. Now the first rumor suggesting this will happen has surfaced, and it goes a step further by suggesting Wii will become more than a gaming platform.

Battlestar Galactica: The Plan Blu-ray Review

26 October 2009 11:54 AM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, directed by William Adama himself Edward James Olmos, offers fans of the series one last chance to say goodbye and the show's creative team a first (and last?) opportunity to tie together several dangling loose ends. It is mandatory viewing as part of the show's legacy and arc but not the best the show has to offer. Newcomers to Ron Moore's Battlestar Galactica universe should stay far, far away until after viewing the complete series.

The Plan speaks directly to the introduction text "and they have a plan" in reference to the first season of Battlestar Galatica. As it turns out the actual "plan" is quite simple: the complete extermination of all humans on the colonies via a carefully orchestrated nuclear attack which is shown more fully with the destruction of multiple colonies than in the miniseries. The "plan" failed with the survival of a »

Blu-ray Release Rumors: Jennifer's Body, The Hurt Locker and More

22 October 2009 2:59 PM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Enough rumored Blu-ray Disc release date rumors have crossed my desk to warrant putting together this article so you can get an idea of what the coming months hold for the high-def home video format.

The first rumors suggests the sci-fi horror thriller Pandorum will make fast tracks to Blu-ray on December 22, followed by a devilishly hungry Megan Fox in Jennifer's Body on December 29. I tend to believe the latter is more plausible than the former but we should find out soon enough either way.

The new year should kick off with the direct-to-video sequel Smokin' Aces 2: Assassins Ball.

January 12 is looking to debut the remake of Fame two weeks prior to the original arriving on Blu-ray. Also a possibility for this date is Rob Zombie's Halloween 2 and Summit's critically acclaimed The Hurt Locker which I personally cannot wait to see.

Star Trek The Next Generation Motion Picture Collection Blu-ray Review

22 October 2009 2:59 PM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Paramount set a high bar with the Star Trek Movie Collection featuring the original series cast earlier this year. Those standards carry through to the second half of the complete series run, the Star Trek: The Next Generation Motion Picture Collection.

This series of films 7-10 begins with a passing of the torch from Kirk to Picard in Generations and then moves full warp ahead with the new cast in fan-favorite and my pick for the best film in the set, First Contact. Insurrection represents a creative step back for the franchise with less mass appeal, and the darker Nemesis is the most forgettable live action Star Trek film and consequently was the last before the J.J. Abrams reboot in early 2009.

The Next Generation DVD transfers were heavily knocked for being overly digitally manipulated with less than stellar results. Paramount has applied some slight artificial cleansing in the form of »

Things Go Ka-Blooey in Red Dawn Remake Set

14 October 2009 8:38 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

The struggle against the invading Chinese forces continue in Detroit, where the folks behind the remake of “Red Dawn” are currently filming. One of those scenes involve Chinese army types mingling about, and the other is the huge ass detonation of a building, one of those Chinese friendly outreach center as previously revealed here, I would guess. Hah! Take that outreach and shove it up your you-know-what, Chairmain Mao! Ahem. That scene was snapped by a photographer from The Detroit News, and it is indeed glorious. Dan Bradley directs the mayhem, which is due out September 24, 2010. »

Explosions Galore on the Set of Red Dawn

13 October 2009 6:57 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Things on the set of the Red Dawn remake sure have been jumping lately. Tanks, machine guns, explosions, Chinese invaders, and oh yeah, Explosions! Thanks to the great guys over at Red Dawn 2010, we have some fan footage of an explosion from the set of movie as they were filming it as well as some great high quality stills taken by photographer David Guralnick at The Detroit News.

Dan Bradley is making his solo directorial debut with Red Dawn and many people are concerned that he may not have the ability to pull it off. The man does have plenty of 2nd Unit and Stunt Directing experience and it’s that experience that I think will help drive this movie into the “great” category. He oversaw the stunt work in the movies The Bourne Ultimatum, Spider-Man 3, Crank, Cradle 2 the Grave, Donnie Darko and he did 2nd directing on Quantum of Solace, »

Drag Me to Hell Blu-ray Review with D-box

12 October 2009 11:18 AM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Sam Raimi's Drag Me to Hell harkens back to the filmmaker's early pre-Hollywood years that produced The Evil Dead and its hilariously gross sequel, Dead by Dawn. Only this time the hero is an inferior heroine, CGI intermingles with practical effects, and the desire for a sequel is noticeably absent.

Replacing Bruce Campbell as the unfortunate target of demonic forces is Alison Lohman as a bank teller who shoos off a crotchety rotten old gypsy woman begging for a loan extension in favor of impressing her boss for a promotion. The decrepit gypsy then places a curse on Lohman who must then spend the rest of the film fighting off a series of gruesome supernatural attacks prefaced by a shockingly aggressive confrontation in a parking garage leading to the hexing moment.

Though Raimi plays parts of the gypsy woman brawl for comedy and others for thrills, each ensuing nightmare-come-true »

X-Men Origins: Wolverine Blu-ray Review

8 October 2009 11:23 AM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

X-Men Origins: Wolverine was one of the first big summer movies out of the gate which naturally translated to being the first big summer movie to arrive on home video. With it comes a pair of alternate endings, one those who either passed on the film theatrically or bolted at the first glimpse of credits after being let down by the film missed, and the first appearance of IMDb data channeled via Bd-Live exclusively on Blu-ray Disc.

Wolverine's origins, never before explored prior to the film, begin over a century ago when the then continuously sickly boy who goes by James and his brother, Victor, are forced to run away after James thrusts his newfound claws through his father's chest in an act of pure rage and vengeance. No explanation is given to why young James is perpetually sick or why he and his brother stop aging around the time they go to war, »

Back in August, we told you about the upcoming "Red Dawn" remake. Well, it's being shot right now in Pontiac, Michigan, and you can check new production pictures, as well as a daily production blog.

Check out more photos right here, and check the site right here.

Here's more info about the "Red Dawn" remake:

Remember the 1984 film "Red Dawn" starring Patrick Swayze? The film tells the story of mid-western American teenagers who band together to defend their town, and eventually their country, from invading Soviet troops.

It is the dawn of World War III.

Well, the dawn of the remake is upon us. Right now, actors Chris Hemsworth (Captain Kirk's daddy in "Star Trek" and the-man-who-would-be-Thor), Josh Peck ("Drillbit Taylor," "The Wackness"), and Adrianne Palicki ("Supernatural") are set to star.

Joining them are Josh Hutcherson ("Journey to the Center of the Earth," "Bridge to Terabithia"), Isabel Lucas ("Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen »

Braveheart: Sapphire Series Blu-ray Review

28 September 2009 9:48 PM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Paramount's new Sapphire Series Blu-ray Disc line is designed to give the best of the best high definition treatment to the most requested and cherished films in the studio's catalog. Titles fans have been clamoring for since the format first launched several years ago that carry lengthy petitions for release. When it comes to the best of the best in film, there is no arguing Mel Gibson's 1995 Best Picture winner Braveheart deserved and was rightfully given a spot in the first Sapphire Series wave of titles to hit store shelves. Approaching 15 years since it burst onto the scene, Braveheart's mix of commitment, sacrifice for freedom, and the savagery of war continues to influence sweeping dramas with epic battle sequences to this day. Any creative historical liberties taken with William Wallace's struggle to keep Scotland from being assimilated into England are swallowed up by Gibson's vulnerable yet cunning »

Jeffrey Dean Morgan Joins New Red Dawn

24 September 2009 3:37 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

While I was on vacation, I missed this little bit of news.  Underrated actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan is joining the cast of the Red Dawn remake currently under the direction of Dan Bradley.  The movie is shooting right now in Michigan for a release exactly a year from today.  (Click here for set pics.)

Talking with Collider, Morgan said he will play the Powers Boothe character from the 1984 original (Andy), a pilot that lands in the town and helps the kids quell an invasion by Chinese and Russian soldiers.  Also part of the cast are Chris Hemsworth, Josh Peck, Josh Hutcherson, Isabel Lucas, Adrianne Palicki, and Connor Cruise (Tom’s son).

He also seemed interested in playing Lobo in the DC Comics movie coming together at Warners with director Guy Ritchie.  It would make three comic book movies in roughly three years if he got the part, having appeared in »

Chinese Propaganda On the Set of ‘Red Dawn’

24 September 2009 8:43 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

If you aren’t aware, one of the most iconic films of the 80’s is being remade. That doesn’t really narrow it down for you, does it? Ok, it was one of the most iconic films of the 80’s And starred the late great Patrick Swayze. Got it now? Well we are down to two, so it’s either Dirty Dancing or Red Dawn. A Comedian Joins Red Dawn

18 September 2009 5:29 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Jeffrey Dean Morgan, perhaps most notable for playing The Comedian in Zack Snyder’s Watchmen adaptation, is joining the cast of the Red Dawn remake.

Variety got the scoop on Morgan’s role in the film, which seems somewhat unnecessary:

“‘Red Dawn’ follows a group of teenagers who band together to fight back when their home town is invaded by an joint force of Chinese and Russian soldiers. Morgan will play the leader of the U.S. Special Forces team who discovers the teens’ stronghold while behind enemy lines.”

The film is being directed by talented stunt coordinator and unproven film helmer Dan Bradley, from a script by The Last House on the Left scribe Carl Ellsworth.

The film is scheduled for release on September 24th, 2010. »

First Pics & Video of ‘Red Dawn’ Remake Invade the Web

15 September 2009 7:36 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

This is a bittersweet moment for me. First one of the truly last great men of Hollywood, Patrick Swayze, dies (the bitter) from his long battle with cancer yesterday. Then, the day after, we get some behind-the-scenes pictures of the new Red Dawn remake (the sweet) courtesy of a heads-up by our friends at AICN.

I don’t know about you but I’m a Huge fan of behind-the-scenes pictures and videos and the site Red Dawn 2010 has got them in spades. I’ve put together 5 of the most interesting ones and one video of the house blowing up but if you head over to the website BeforeTheTrailer.com, you can take a peek at the others here and here.

Red Dawn is arguably one of Swayze’s best films, and it for sure put him on the movie map as a strong leading man. The Red Dawn remake should »
