On 9 May 2021 Tracy Brabin was named the inaugural West Yorkshire mayor, representing the Labour Party. She received 310,923 votes (59.8%) after second preference ballots were counted.
There are 2.3 million people in the region that includes Leeds, Bradford and Wakefield. As mayor, Brabin will have powers over transport, crime and planning. She became the first female metro mayor in England, four years after the creation of the roles in regions of major cities.
