The Continental: From the world of John Wick’ held its panel at the San Diego Comic Con (Sdcc) and showcased some intense footage giving us an idea about both its tone and action.
While the show will apparently have a somewhat lighter tone, audiences should not make the mistake that this will get McU-fied as it still contains plenty of amazing action, full of blood and gore. Set in the world of 1970’s New York City, the show will dive deeper into the franchise’s obscure criminal mythology, exploring both the origins of the eponymous hotel for assassins in New York, as well as how actor Ian McShane’s character Winston Scott became the proprietor of its New York branch.

The Guild announced on Thursday nominations for the 21st Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards across a multitude of categories covering features, TV, commercials and music videos.

The Art Directors Guild has announced the nominees for this year’s Adg Excellence in Production Design Awards, with “Jackie,” “La La Land” and more among the contenders. Adg’s awards are different from most others, as it has categories for Period, Fantasy and Contemporary Films; this has led to a wide array of winners in recent years, including the likes of “Her” and “Guardians of the Galaxy.” This year’s ceremony, the 21st, will take place in Hollywood on Saturday, February 11. “The Times They Are a Changin'” pretty well sums up this year’s Emmy craft contenders for production and costume design. The series all deal with social, political and cultural upheaval, which provided creative opportunities in designing and dressing characters on the cusp of change.

In the race for production design (fantasy or contemporary), Amazon’s adaptation of Philip K.Dick’s “The Man in the High Castle” is building buzz for its retro-future vision, in which the Nazis and Japanese won World War II.
For production designer Drew Boughton, that meant three distinct looks for New York City (run by the Nazis), San Francisco (occupied by the Japanese) and Canon City, Colorado (the neutral zone). New York offered an austere, concrete, gray vibe reminiscent of the Eastern block, San Francisco went more wood and aqua blue and Canon City was rural, like a Western.

There’s good reason newcomers “The People v. O.J. Simpson,” “Mr. Robot” and “The Man in the High Castle” distinguished themselves with Emmy craft noms: they brought authenticity to stories that tap into the racial divisiveness, violence and alienation that are weighing heavily on our minds this Presidential election season. And riding the surge of female empowerment, impeccably produced “Outlander” and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” also landed craft recognition.
FX’s “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” grabbed 22 noms (including cinematography, costumes, makeup and editing), second only to Emmy leader “Game of Thrones” with 23. What they achieved with recreating “the trial of the century” in the ’90s was bringing it eerily full-circle today.

"The Man in the High Castle" is a show that imagines what America would look like if Germany and Japan won WWII. That means it includes lots of Nazi imagery, like a swastika on the American flag and on the face of New York's iconic 2 Times Square. These are images that, even 70 years after the war, can be very upsetting. In fact, "High Castle" showrunner Frank Spotnitz told The New York Times that the show had some difficulties securing locations for the shoot, as many building owners refused to participate once they found out that there would be swastikas involved. "The production did what it could to keep from roiling the emotions of locals during filming, covering armbands between scenes and waiting as long as possible before hoisting inflammatory flags and banners," the article continues, before concluding with production designer Drew Boughton saying that "the trickiest thing has been navigating these legitimate sensitivities.
