Long running BBC quiz show A Question Of Sport has been axed after more than five decades on the air.
The BBC have confirmed that A Question Of Sport has ceased production after fifty three years on the air.
It began in 1970, with David Vine as host, and although the show was not on screens for two years in the 1970s, it had remained in continuous production since 1978.
A Question Of Sport really took off under the stewardship of David Coleman in the 1980s – the 1989 episode featuring Princess Anne as one of the guests got a whopping nineteen million viewers.
Former tennis player Sue Barker then hosted the show for 24 years, before being replaced by Paddy McGuinness in 2021. This was also when the show underwent a significant revamp, with non-sporting celebrities being invited to appear as guests, transforming the show into more of a light entertainment programme.

Cricket has never had such an enormous and variable audience and therefore, quite rightly so, a plethora of ideas and innovations are cropping up to make the game even more interesting. The famous marketing line of a “customer is always right” is the mantra that the cricketers and the marketeers are vociferously following. The cricket fans want action, glamour, heroes and trend setters and the T20 format is ideally suited to provide that.
The changes in the rules of cricket, therefore, are being gradually tested on the shorter format of the game and in tournaments that are independently run, like the Indian Premier League (Ipl). The “Impact” player option has been introduced in this years’ edition of the Ipl and one can already see its usefulness.
Most of the coaches in the Ipl have come forth positively about it, as it does make a side’s decision making of a playing eleven that much easier.

London, Aug 24 (Ians) England great Ian Botham believes skipper Ben Stokes will not deviate from their attacking approach when the second Test against South Africa begins at Old Trafford on Thursday, saying the charismatic all-rounder is “highly competitive” and “wants to push the game to new limits”.
England had a humbling outing at Lord’s in the opening Test, losing to the Proteas by an innings and 12 runs, but former skipper Joe Root and Stokes have said there is no looking back from the attacking and fearless style of play adopted by the team.
“I didn’t expect anything else from Ben,” Botham was quoted as saying by Daily Mail. “When you spend time with him you see he is a winner, highly competitive and wants to push the game to new limits.

Auckland, May 25 (Ians) Virat Kohli's on-field aggression is justified as it helps in unsettling opposition, a tactic necessary for India skipper since he faces enormous pressure to win from fans, said former New Zealand all-rounder Richard Hadlee.
"I quite like seeing any player expressing themself (sic) towards the opposition by having a real presence -- it is a form of intimidation that can be unsettling, and a tactic used by many sportspeople," said Hadlee in an interview to International Cricket Council (Icc).
"I see Virat as being a very passionate and competitive cricketer with a strong desire for himself and the team to succeed. The pressure and expectations on him to 'win' is enormous. There are millions of Indian fans who idolise him which puts great pressure on him. Auckland, May 25 (Ians) Jasprit Bumrah is prone and vulnerable to injuries due to his unorthodox bowling action but India fast bowler's technique has proved highly effective in helping him catch batsmen off guard, said former New Zealand all-rounder Richard Hadlee.
"Jasprit fits into the unorthodox bowling category with virtually no run up to the crease. His technique, in some ways, defies belief but has proved to be a highly effective one. He is what I call a shoulder or strength bowler with all his power and pace coming from the final part of his action as he releases the ball," said Hadlee in an interview with the International Cricket Council (Icc).
The Kiwi, a former pace bowler himself, said he is unsure about Bumrah's longevity in cricket.

Auckland, May 25 (Ians) Cricket needs India due to the revenue it generates and also strides it has made in Test cricket that has kept longest format of the game alive, said former New Zealand all-rounder Richard Hadlee.
"There is no doubt India produces a lot of revenue for cricket. Without India, the face of world cricket would be very different, therefore cricket needs India," said Hadlee, who formed a world-class quartet of all-rounders in 1970s and 1980s along with Imran Khan, Kapil Dev and Ian Botham.
"But India has also made an outstanding contribution to Test cricket -- like in all formats. Their Test performances in Australia were outstanding despite that 36 all out blip. They bounced back superbly, and Test cricket came alive again. So many youngsters came into the team and performed. It showed the great depth of talented players India have in all formats," Hadlee added while speaking to the Times of India.

New Delhi, Feb 10 (Ians) The Test series played between India and England should be called the 'Tendulkar Cook Trophy', says former spinner Monty Panesar.

Bookmakers have slashed the odds on Piers Morgan taking part in the summer series of Celebrity Big Brother after he was axed by CNN yesterday (February 24).
Morgan's embarrassment at having his American show dropped because of free-falling ratings can't have been helped by news from Ladbrokes that it has started taking bets on him participating in the Channel 5 reality show.
Ladbrokes has given odds of 5/1 that Morgan will take part and claimed that he would fit in well with other rumoured housemates such as Benefits Street contributor White Dee.
Punters can back him at 14/1 to enter Strictly Come Dancing or 10/1 to join his former Britain's Got Talent co-stars Ant & Dec in the jungle.
On an even more worrying note for Morgan, the bookies are also cutting the odds to 4/1 that his Life Stories series will be axed by ITV.

It is an important summer for both England and Australia. It always is when it comes to Cricket’s greatest rivalry – The Ashes. Australia enter the five match series on the firing line and with several doubts about their credentials both here and back home, while last month Cricket Australia took the drastic decision to fire coach Mickey Arthur cancelling his contract two years early, possibly as a direct consequence of the fact that the former South Africa coach had reportedly lost the dressing room.
This was brought to light most notably on the disastrous tour to India in March where four senior players including vice-captain Shane Watson were dropped for failing to do their ‘homework’. Refusal to carry out the most simplest of tasks suggests that the relationship had already eroded long before it became front page news, and that his departure on the 24th June was the point...

London, Oct 7: Actress Elizabeth Hurley and Australian cricketer Shane Warne indulged in some public display of affection during a round of golf. The two locked lips in full public view.
The lovers were surrounded by a handful of other players, including Ian Botham, but that didn't stop them from kissing passionately in the middle of the sporting crowd in Scotland Friday, reports dailymail.co.uk.

Summer 1981. The Australian cricket team arrives in England for The Ashes, the test cricket face-off between the two countries, that has been hotly contested for the past hundred years. Ian Botham, at the relatively tender age of 24, has recently been made captain of the England cricket team, but his form has dipped of late. Alongside that, there are tensions within the Australia team, as well as civil unrest, demonstrations and rioting across the country. So who will prevail?

To coincide with today’s release of the movie, Kaleidoscope Home Entertainment have sent over this brand new clip from their new film, From the Ashes which focuses around the 1981 Ashes tournament. It’s directed James Erkskine by who previously brought us One Night in Turin. I got to speak with James a few weeks ago for the release of the movie and you can check out the interview here. It’s a thoroughly good watch and if you’re a cricket fan, you’ll love it.
From The Ashes is an uplifting and remarkable tale of a summer that changed English sport forever.
In July 1981, rioting and discontent ruled the streets of England. On the playing fields, England was 1-0 down after two tests against old enemy, Australia, and iconic all-rounder Ian Botham had resigned as English captain, hours before being pushed. Watching on was opposing Captain, Kim Hughes,...

To celebrate the release of From the Ashes on DVD and Blu-ray on 30th May, Kaleidoscope Home Entertainment have given us three copies of the movie to give away on DVD. If you missed our interview with the director of the movie, James Erskine, you can check it out here.
From The Ashes is the uplifting and remarkable tale of a summer that changed England forever. July 1981, rioting and discontent rule the streets of Britain. Meanwhile, on the playing fields,England are 1-0 down after two tests against the old enemy, Australia; and Ian Botham, their iconic all-rounder, has resigned as English captain, moments before being pushed.
With English cricket on the brink, bookmakers offer odds of 500-1 against an English win in the 3rd Test. Yet, a reinvigorated Ian Botham refuses to lie down and rediscovers his cavalier flair in a series of match-winning performances that enthral a nation and see the Ashes retained.

You can wait for years for a cricketing film, then suddenly two documentaries come along. First there was James Erskine's From the Ashes, about Ian Botham's brief captaincy of England and his subsequent role in winning the Ashes in the early 1980s. Now there's this riveting film about the doldrums in which the West Indies found themselves in the 1970s, and how under the captaincy of Clive Lloyd then Viv Richards they abandoned the cheerful losing mode known as "calypso cricket" and became formidably aggressive winners. It's a rousing film about ex-colonials uniting to assert their pride and to recover a dignity that continued to be denied them by the English and Australians. Nothing gave them a greater desire to fight back than hearing Tony Greig, the deeply unpleasant South African-born English captain, say that he intended to make the Caribbean cricketers grovel. It's great to see Greig get his comeuppance.

This spring no less than three British-made sports documentaries get a cinematic release. Does this mark the start of a new relationship between sport and film?
Sport and cinema have been uneasy bedfellows over the years, their dual history mapped out by a series of rather awkward public conjoinings. Football has long been something close to a running joke on film, its high points restricted to the Brian Glover Pe teacher bits in Kes, the luminous pre-modern internationalism of Escape to Victory, and any action movie in which geezer-for-hire and former Wimbledon clogger Vinnie Jones takes a beating.
Perhaps sport and film stand apart as poles: an oil-and-water collision of the loud, the outdoor and the boisterous with the dimly lit, the indoor and the ruminative. That might be about to change. This month three British-made sporting documentaries have had a cinematic release. Two are cricket films: From the Ashes...

Last week I got to chat with director, James Erskine about his brand new movie, From the Ashes which has a cinema release this evening and will be streamed to 127 cinemas around the UK followed by a Q&A with Ian Botham and Kim Hughes. You can find which cinemas are screening the movie on the official website here.
When I called James, he was at The Oval in South London watching the cricket which was perfectly topical for our conversation. James has previously directed One Night in Turin which looked at the England football team’s defeat at the 1990 Football World Cup. This time, he focuses on a sporting triumph looking at the 1981 Ashes Test match.
Read on to find out how he got involved in the project and what you can expect. If you missed the trailer, you can watch it here.

Finally, British filmmakers are understanding just what it takes to make fine and meaningful sporting documentaries of the nation’s two favourite sports (sorry Rugby) as James Erskine follows-up his excellent One Night In Turin documentary (the definite account of England’s 1990 World Cup) with From The Ashes – the re-telling of the England vs. Australia 1981 clash where Ian Botham became a hero.
Owf have been granted an exclusive sneak peak at the documentary below and once again Erskine looks to have blended the sporting drama with footage that contextualises the story into it’s political and social background. This is where Erskine’s docs really excel. It’s not just about what happened on the field but it’s what it meant to the fans, scratch that, the whole British nation as a whole who took to these sporting icons during some rocky times. Two weeks, over 130 films and countless events and appearances, the nation's biggest factual film event gives you plenty to chew on – too much for any one mouth but whether it's Finnish saunas, morris dancing or Middle East politics, there's something for you here. Many key films assess influential individuals. Asif Kapadia's new Ayrton Senna film opens proceedings; Steven Soderbergh remembers Spalding Grey and Martin Scorsese honours Elia Kazan; Gomorrah author Roberto Saviano's threatened lifestyle is detailed; and Playboy's Hugh Hefner is recast as a liberal crusader – nothing to talk about there then.
Various venues, Fri to 28 May
Fire In Babylon & From The Ashes, Nationwide
Cricket is hardly underrepresented on the nation's airwaves, but for those who'd prefer a little bit of history to go with the hours of live coverage, you've got an enticing documentary double bill this month. From The Ashes remembers England's tumultuous 1981 Ashes campaign,...

A documentary about Botham, Brearley and two stunning Ashes wins of 1981. But it's the Australians who come across best
The glory days of England's early-80s bout of cricket fever are excavated in this entertaining if not fantastically enlightening documentary. We all know the story: how Ian Botham was relieved of the England captaincy after a disappointing start to the 1981 Ashes Test series, and his replacement by wizardly tactician Mike Brearley enabled the hitherto misfiring team to pull off two stunning back-from-the-dead victories. With the Charles-Diana wedding hovering in the background, the stage was set for a patriotic sporting achievement, which the undeniably Clarksonesque Botham doesn't hesitate to point out on more than one occasion. But it's the Australians – notably Rod Marsh and Kim Hughes – who come across best, talking frankly about how their feuds undermined them and how they underestimated the opposition.

Here’s a slightly indulgent post but since I’m a massive England cricket fan, I make no apologies for putting it up! On 10th May (and literally only that night), Kaleidoscope Entertainment will be putting on the Charity world Premiere of From the Ashes in association with Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. From the Ashes follows the famous 1981 Ashes series, known to many as “Botham’s Ashes”, where cricketing legend Sir Ian Botham stole the show and brought England Ashes glory against all the odds.
Following the screening, a Q&A with cricketing legends, Sir Ian Botham, Bob Willis and Dickie Bird will take place live via satellite and beamed to all 100 cinemas showing the movie across the UK simultaneously. If you’re a cricket fan, this is an event not to be missed!
From the Ashes is directed by who previously brought us One Night in Turin.

As trophies go, cricket's Ashes may be small - Zoolander Academy-small - but it's also the one of the most prized in sport. It goes to the winners of one of the most ferocious contests in sport: a series between England and Australia that's rich in lore, history and men in white trying to knock each others' heads off. From The Ashes captures one of the fiercest Ashes summers in all its glory; a six-match series that England seemed poised to lose, before Ian Botham singlehandedly staged one of the great sporting comebacks at Headingley. The documentary reassembles some of the key players in that long, hot summer - Botham, Bob Willis, Allan Border, Allan Border's moustache - and sets their memories to archive footage that will have any cricket fan's heart beating just a little faster. It's made by the people who brought us last year's Italia '90 doc One Night In Turin.
