Paramount+ has partnered with Italian and German public broadcasters Rai and Zdf on coming-of-age TV series “The Gymnasts” from Italy’s Indigo Film (“The Great Beauty”) to be directed by Cosima Spender (“Palio”) and Valerio Bonelli.
Also on board as a key partner on “The Gymnasts” — which was recently presented at the Series Mania Co-Pro Pitching Sessions — is London-based super-indie All3Media International, which will be handling international sales of the show in territories not covered by its main broadcasters.
The project is part of The Alliance, the production pact forged among continental Europe’s leading public broadcasters to co-finance innovative, high-profile TV series for the international market.
But, in an interesting twist, “The Gymnasts” will be premiering as a Paramount+ original in Italy and across France, the U.K., Canada, Australia, Latin America and South Korea.

Joe Wright’s “Cyrano,” starring Peter Dinklage and Hayley Bennett, based on the 2018 stage musical by Erica Schmidt (derived from the classic French play of unrequited love from Edmond Rostand), has surprisingly qualified for Best Original Score Oscar consideration. That’s because brothers Aaron and Bryce Dessner, of the folk group The National, composed an original score separate from their theatrical score. Additionally, the Dessners reworked the songs for the movie as well, with lyrics from National frontman Matt Berninger and his wife Carin Besser.
Plus, “Cyrano” boasts two new Oscar-contending original songs: “Every Letter,” sung by Bennett, and “Somebody Desperate” (appearing over the end credits), an all-Nationals collaboration sung by Berninger, who wrote with Bryce and Aaron.
In 2021, the Academy rules were changed for the category, lowering the minimum percentage of original music from 60 to 35 percent of the total music in a movie — a threshold easily cleared by “Cyrano.

It should come as no surprise that “Dune” will most likely land an Oscar nomination for frequent Denis Villeneuve collaborator Joe Walker. The crafts spectacle comes together as Walker stitches score, sound design and all elements of the epic to follow Paul Arrakis (Timothée Chalamet), whisking audiences away into an unmatchable immersive experience.
Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” editor Peter Sciberras strikes a perfect balance between sweeping vistas and the tension between Benedict Cumberbatch’s Phil Burbank and Kodi Smit McPhee’s enigmatic Peter.
Joel Coen didn’t just direct and adapt but he also co-edited “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” as he has many of his past projects under the pseudonym Reginald Jaynes, alongside Lucian Johnston. Netflix’s first Italian original doc series “SanPa: Sins of the Savior” follows controversial drug rehab founder Vincenzo Muccioli, and has made a splash on the platform since its Dec. 30 debut. In the last week, the series has cracked the platform’s top 10 most-watched programs in Italy, and currently holds the number 2 spot after “Bridgerton.”
Directed by Cosima Spender — whose 2015 doc “Palio,” about the storied horse race held in Siena, went to Tribeca — “SanPa” is a deep dive into the complexities of Muccioli’s rise to national prominence, and the dubious methods used at his rehab center. As promotional materials put it, the charismatic Muccioli “cared for the addicted, earning him fierce public devotion — even as charges of violence began to mount.”
Those charges included aiding and abetting the murder of one of his rehab’s residents, Roberto Maranzano, who in 1989 was beaten to death in a slaughterhouse within San Patrignano,...

When actor Chiwetel Ejiofor optioned the rights for the 2009 best-seller “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind,” penning the screenplay for a feature directorial debut that world-premieres in Sundance and then appears in the Berlin Film Festival before being released globally by Netflix this spring, colleagues floated the idea of shooting the Malawi-set film in tried-and-tested locations like South Africa or Kenya.
Ejiofor demurred. “It just didn’t seem plausible to me,” says the director, who was captivated by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer’s story about a 13-year-old boy who builds a windmill to save his village from famine. “There was no way that we could shoot the film anywhere else. For me, it was really a question of diving in feet first and just seeing what happens.”

Receiving the script for Darkest Hour after working with Joe Wright on “Nosedive,” one of Black Mirror‘s most acclaimed episodes, editor Valerio Bonelli found more of a thriller than the straightforward period drama he was expecting, exploring ways to build tension through the cut and convey the stakes at hand during a critical turning point in World War II. Examining Anthony McCarten’s script—which depicted Winston Churchill’s unexpected rise to the position of Prime…...

Darkest Hour features Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill delivering a rousing and pivotal speech in the House of Commons in an effort to rally Parliament to fight on rather than negotiate with Hitler. The words are familiar — in fact, they are also heard near the end of Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk — but cutting the scene together was tricky, according to film editor Valerio Bonelli.
Wright had a sweeping crane shot that closed in on Oldman as he exhorted, "We shall fight on the beach, we shall fight on...

With “Dunkirk” and “Darkest Hour,” we get a pair of complementary World War II movies about heroism and leadership, both involving the legendary 1940 evacuation of Allied forces from the beaches of France and the behind the scenes political warfare displayed by Winston Churchill (Oscar frontrunner Gary Oldman, who leads the latter film). Meanwhile, the editorial demands couldn’t be more different for “Dunkirk’s” Lee Smith and “Darkest Hour’s” Valerio Bonelli.
While Christopher Nolan offered “visceral realism” for his “Dunkirk,” an overlapping actioner covering land, sea, and air, “Darkest Hour” helmer Joe Wright delivered a more psychological approach to his claustrophobic pressure cooker.
Diving Into “Dunkirk”
After working with Nolan since “Batman Begins,” Smith found “Dunkirk” a very refreshing editorial departure. Even with its experiment in time, it contained little dialogue and the running time was only 106 minutes, around a half-hour shorter than the typical Nolan movie. “This is...

Here’s the terrific first trailer for Florence Foster Jenkins starring Meryl Streep as Florence Foster Jenkins with Hugh Grant as her partner St Clair Bayfield.
The comedy drama directed by Stephen Frears (Philomena, The Queen) tells the inspirational true story of the eponymous New York heiress who obsessively pursued her dream of becoming a great singer.
The film celebrates the human spirit, the power of music and the passion of amateurs everywhere. The voice Florence (Streep) heard in her head was divine, but to the rest of the world it was hilariously awful. At private recitals, her devoted husband and manager, St Clair Bayfield (Grant), managed to protect Florence from the truth. But when Florence decided to give her first public concert at New York’s Carnegie Hall, St Clair realised he had perhaps bitten off more than he could chew.
