Lionsgate’s Vestron Video Collector’s Series is getting a Steelbook upgrade, at least when it comes to David Cronenberg‘s controversial feature debut, Shivers.
Shivers becomes available on Steelbook® on March 5, 2024, exclusively at Walmart.
In Shivers, “The residents of a suburban high-rise apartment building are being infected by a strain of parasites that turn them into mindless, sex-crazed fiends out to infect others by the slightest sexual contact.” The cast includes Paul Hampton, Lynn Lowry, and Barbara Steele.
Cronenberg blends sex and violence in a nightmarish parasitic outbreak in a high-rise apartment complex. Scientifically engineered parasites meant to replace functioning human organs instead renders their hosts sexually violent, hellbent on spreading their infection to others. How the pulsing worm-like parasites infect provides a lot of gnarly body horror moments, including a nightmare bathtub scene.
Check out the Steelbook artwork and full list of features included in the release below.

When it comes to horror we all tend to have our favourite type, some will say slashers while others may say they enjoy good old Hammer. One of these directors was David Cronenberg, but one movie that never really sat right with me was Shivers, I just didn’t get it. Then I grew older and wiser and with greater understanding realised just how good the film actually is.

As I set out looking for sponsors for our Broken Moon Monster Makeup Challenge, I never imagined I would have the opportunity to speak with Academy Award winner and long-time monster kid Matthew M. Mungle! For those
who don’t know, Matthew is a highly regarded member of the movie makeup effects world, whose credits include Edward Scissorhands (1990), Bram Stroker’s Dracula (1992)—which earned him his Academy Award— Schindler’S List, Bedazzled, The Skeleton Key, Red Dragon, Anchorman, The X-Files, Inception, and more, not to mention his numerous TV and Broadway credits. Matthew is still very active in film while continuing to work on shows like C.S.I., NCIS, and Wgn’s new series Salem. Matthew was extremely generous in his donation of prizes for our contest, and was even gracious enough to take time out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions for me!

The Brood
Written and directed by David Cronenberg
Canada, 1979
Inspired by his own unpleasant divorce, and the subsequent liberation of his daughter just before his ex-wife was able to take the girl to a California cult, David Cronenberg’s The Brood is essentially an ugly, highly unorthodox custody battle. As the great Canadian filmmaker famously quipped, “The Brood is my version of Kramer vs. Kramer [also released in 1979], but more realistic.”
The Brood is Cronenberg’s sixth feature, coming just after the seemingly out of place Fast Company (1979)—not so very odd given the director’s love for automobile racing—and just before his more exemplary breakthrough, Scanners (1981). It is consummate Cronenberg, with a heady mixture of clinically twisted science and the deep psychological strain that inevitably mars said science with corporeal disfigurement.
With his wife, Nola (Samantha Eggar), undergoing treatment at a facility known as the Somafree Institute of Psychoplasmics (a Cronenbergian...

“Mommie’S Dearest”
By Raymond Benson
David Cronenberg’s horror films always seem to tackle subjects that involve an unpredictable human body and the terror of your consciousness residing inside of it. He explored parasites in his first mainstream picture, Shivers (aka They Came From Within, 1975), and viral “stingers” than grow in a woman’s armpit in his second, Rabid, 1977. The rest of his movies, leading up to the ultimate statement of being trapped in a horrible body, The Fly (1986), all dealt with some aspect of physical or mental transformation. The Brood, released in 1979, fits right in with Cronenberg’s thematic fascination with flesh and blood. And it’s a corker.
Oliver Reed plays Dr. Raglan, an unorthodox psychotherapist who uses controversial techniques that cause his patients to manifest their inner turmoil and anger into visible, bizarre growths on their bodies. One guy sprouts spots. Another man grows a weird...

‘Body Horror’ is a term synonymous with Canadian director David Cronenberg. His early work in the horror field (Rabid, The Brood, The Fly) all share connective tissue through the theme of internal horror – a transformation or catharsis from within (always for the worse) that strikes the viewer in a very personal way. Shivers (1975), aka They Came from Within, is his first feature film - a clever, creepy, and gritty introduction to the sub-genre he helped create.
Distributed by Cinepix Film Properties Inc. (Canada) and Trans American Films (Us) in October ’75 and July ’76 respectively, and produced on a budget of $179,000 (Cad), Shivers played at theaters and Drive-Ins all across North America in the summer of ’76, and up to that point was the most profitable Canadian film produced. Critics were generally kind, including Roger Ebert who thought it was well made, with genuine style and talent on display. There was a new player in the horror world,...

When did you know you wanted to be a SFX artist?
I originally planned on becoming a Walt Disney animator, and after one semester of college at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, I decided that college wasn’t for me, so I went to Joe Blasco in Orlando in January of 1995. I did it as a goof, not seriously thinking that makeup effects would be a career decision.
What was your first gig in SFX and what did you learn from it?
My first film was “Rockabilly Vampire”, which I did for free, and learned how to do vampire teeth, pale makeups, bites, and basically understanding the idiosyncrasies of working on a low budget film. The experience was exciting and scary all at the same time, but from there on I learned something from every film I ever had the pleasure to work on.

I met Arthur Cullipher in Louisville, Kentucky at the Fright Night Film Fest this summer and have made a friend for life. One of the funniest and nicest guys you'd ever want to meet and he is talented too! He and his Clockwerk Pictures team have created one of the darkest and disturbing short films I've ever witnessed with 'Come', think Lovecraft and R-rated Twilight Zone episode mixed with a little Outer Limits, all on acid and then stuck in a blender, I haven't been lucky enough to witness more from him but I'm sure that day is coming. Arthur is a part of Clockwerk Pictures and even the Dark Carnival Film Fest. He's an FX artist, he writes, directs, produces, even makes action figures and can make you laugh in a second! Check out my latest "Versus" with Arthur Cullipher as he's invited all of us for...

Out of a need to cover up her own lupus rashes, Nicole Paxson has created a line of cosmetics for people dealing with lupus and other skin issues including acne, rosacea and birth marks. .I spent much of my life trying to conceal rashes by mixing products,. Paxson said. She tried theatrical make-ups ranging from Joe Blasco to Dermablend, mixing them with Estēe Lauder and Shiseido, but the result was always heavier than she wanted. .Growing up in south Florida, it was awful. I was layering sunscreen with make-up, but it was so thick, I.d go out in hot weather and feel like I was wearing a T-shirt on my face,. Paxson said.

The third annual Makeup Artists and Hair Stylists Symposium, held to honor this year's Oscar nominees, put its best face forward Saturday when last-minute champions of the profession stepped in as sponsors. Makeup legend Joe Blasco saved the panel and screening with participating sponsors Wella and Sebastian Professional by vowing to renew their involvement with the annual event that allows Oscar nominees to share insights with an audience of colleagues and admirers at the Hollywood Museum in the historic Max Factor building on Hollywood Boulevard. The event was co-organized by The Hollywood Reporter's Lynne Segall with the Hollywood Museum's founder Donelle Dadigan. IATSE president Tom Short made an appearance in support of the makeup artists and hair stylists represented by Local 706.
It’s hard to hide my hand on this one but Blue Underground is releasing an underrated gem with Larry Cohen’s God Told Me To. If you aren’t familiar with Cohen, I guarantee that you have seen his work. Cohen has directed The Stuff, Bone, It’s Alive, Phone Booth. He may not have the style of directors like Cronenberg or Carpenter but Cohen’s strength is his writing.

Peter takes the call about a madman perched on a water tower in the middle of New York City picking people off with a hunting rifle equipped with a scope that we later find out really wasn’t adequate for the long-range murders that this man was committing.
