As you can probably tell just from the title, The Last Kumite was inspired by 80s action films, the iconic Bloodsport in particular. And it opens like it stepped out of a time warp from the 1980s with an old-school pop song playing over a montage of scenes shot on the streets of New York City before taking us to the dojo where Michael Rivers is teaching his daughter Bree (Kira Kortenbach).
After an inspirational speech at the end of her training, it’s time to go see Mom. If you guessed that means a trip to the cemetery, you’ve seen as many of these films as I have.

Throwback martial arts action film The Last Kumite heads to streaming in 2024, and here’s the trailer.
There is no question that the 1980s was a vintage time for action films, particularly in Hong Kong. There was a fruitful period in the mid 1980s when Hong Kong directors would hire American martial artists to go toe to toe with onscreen, both to broaden the international appeal and show a wide range of styles.
From Cynthia Rothrock going up against Sammo Hung in Shanghai Express to Richard Norton’s multiple bust ups with Jackie Chan in the likes of City Hunter and Mr Nice Guy, these performers went on to headline a series of low budget American action films that have since gained a cult following, perhaps most notably the China O’Brien series and the numerous No Retreat, No Surrender sequels

"It's time!" Capelight Pictures has unveiled a first look teaser for an upcoming 80s / 90s throwback movie called The Last Kumite, directed by filmmaker Ross W. Clarkson. This indie project has been funded on both Kickstarter and Indiegogo, being readied for release in 2024. It's going direct-to-vod in the spring. The Last Kumite is a new spin on the great martial arts films of the 80s & 90s that are still loved amongst action film fans as much today as they were decades ago. The filmmakers describe it as "a new take on the tournament movie inspired by the likes of Bloodsport, Kickboxer and No Retreat No Surrender." Following a martial arts fighter who discovers other martial artists have also been "forced to fight to save their loved ones." Starring newcomer Mathis Landwehr as Michael in the lead role, with a massive throwback cast including Cynthia Rothrock, Michel Qissi, Matthias Hues, Richard Norton,...

The 1990s were an exciting period for action films, with many of them getting released direct-to-video and showing up seemingly randomly at local video stores, requiring fans of the genre to have memberships at multiple locations to get to see everything. There was so much that if attention wasn’t paid, titles would be missed easily or rented twice under different titles at different video stores. Stars emerged within those ranks and gathered the love and adoration of fans. Here are the 10 of the best Dtv action stars of that era:
Dolph Lundgren
Let’s start with the obvious man on the list, the one that everyone saw films from at their local video stores. Lundgren had films that were released in theaters, on video, and direct to cable in some cases during the 1990s, but one thing is for sure, he was a mainstay of the action film aisle...

Billy Blanks is the kind of man who did some big things in his life, but his fans aren’t entirely sure where he went or what happened to him over the years. He is the man behind the Tae Bo program, and he is a man who has been through it all. The 80s were big for him when he first introduced the world to Tae Bo, but things have fizzled out a bit on that front. Exercise programs and workouts alike all go through some changes across the years, and he’s no exception to the rule. He hit it

Action Bronson makes sure to let me know that he does not want to promote his new book, F*ck It, I’ll Start Tomorrow: A True Story. Over Zoom, he’s animated and seems relieved that the process of putting it together is finally over. It’s not that Bronson, born Ariyan Arslani, thinks the book is bad — more that working on it forced him into an uncomfortable moment of self-reflection. “I hated every second of it, but in a sense, it really did help me,” he says. “It...

Match #1: Jimmy Havoc defeated Shawn Dean My Opinion: 2.8/5
This was way too short, but not bad for some-thing that was less than five minutes. Havoc is having a pretty good run lately, but I wish that the booking would let him past the point he’s being kept at. Dean did good and has a hand to hang on with, but Havoc had more than one hand for grabbing the brass ring up Dean’s ass. That didn’t make sense,...

Denis Akiyama, who battled Keanu Reeves in Johnny Mnemonic and portrayed the real-life creator of Pac-Man in Pixels, has died. He was 66.
Akiyama died Thursday in his hometown of Toronto after battling a "very rare and aggressive cancer," his son, Kintaro Akiyama, told The Hollywood Reporter. "He went peacefully into the light on the morning of the full moon," he said.
Akiyama was in Captive Hearts (1987) opposite Pat Morita and in David Cronenberg's Dead Ringers (1988), and he played a mobster landlord in Balance of Power (1996) opposite Billy Blanks and Mako. He also worked often in thrillers ...

The Clapper is an indie film about a different side of Hollywood, a kind of romantic comedy about an anonymous worker in Los Angeles who ekes out a living as a paid face in the crowd for audiences for infomercials. It is a job kind of like a movie extra but ranked much lower, as clappers are impersonating ordinary people in audiences in advertisements impersonating television programs. Clappers are part of the background that creates the illusion that producers are selling to their real audience.
Director Dito Montiel adapted the script from his novel “Eddie Krumble is the Clapper,” his second book after “A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints,” which was also made into an indie film.. The story is semi-autobiographical, based on Montiel’s experiences after moving to L.

For fans of 80s action cinema, No Retreat No Surrender holds a special place. We've been speaking to the man behind the series...
If you were a kid in the 1980s and you liked action movies, chances are you rented No Retreat No Surrender at some point. It was like a more violent, high-octane take on The Karate Kid, with all-American teen Jason (Kurt McKinney) getting martial arts tutelage from no less than The Ghost Of Bruce Lee so he could kick the ass of a muscly Russian (Jean-Claude Van Damme in his first major role). As a kid, this movie was everything to me. It was a 15 cert so a little bit edgy, but still simple and wholesome enough for young me to totally ‘get it’. I had tears streaming down my face the first time I watched it, I was so invested in the final fight.

Eric Roberts (The Human Centipede III), Mika Padilla (NCIS), Billy Blanks (The Last Boy Scout) and Jared Allman (The Hunger Games : Catching Fire) star in the hair-raising chronicle of a group of shape-shifting werewolves that descend upon a small town in search of a girl who is re-born once every 2000 years. When looking at eighties action heroes Jean-Claude Van Damme managed to make a name for himself in a genre built upon already big names and even bigger egos. Although A.W.O.L. This weekend’s B-Sides is the theme song to the 1992 direct-to-video action movie Talons of the Eagle. This song is not for your listening pleasure. This song is a dare – a challenge. Can you listen to the whole thing from beginning to end?
I have never seen Talons of the Eagle. Kind of surprising given it starred Billy Blanks and I was all about those cheesy direct-to-video action movies around the time this came out. The Devil's Rejects' Priscilla Barnes co-stars, and here’s the plot according to the IMDb:
After three DEA agents are killed by Mr. Li (James Hong), martial arts champion Tyler Wilson (Blanks) is sent on assignment to Toronto and teams up with Michael Reed (Jalal Merhi). Wilson and Reed enter a martial arts tournament, where they end up saving Mr. Li from being killed by a rival crime boss. Li invites the two to join his staff.

There may be a slight possibility that standards for movie titles have become more lenient over the years, since we can't really fathom an action movie like this week's "Bullet to the Head" coming out in 1954 with a title like that. No sir.
The Sylvester Stallone vehicle does stick in your head for some reason, so we thought we'd dig in and find the most gruesome, lurid and downright threatening movie titles ever conceived. Remember, the criteria here ain't the violent content of the film itself, just its nastified handle.
15. '8 Million Ways to Die' (1986)
The unlikely combination of star Jeff Bridges, screenwriter Oliver Stone and director Hal Ashby ("Harold and Maude") came up with this neo-noir concoction, which failed to ignite at the box office and ultimately served as Ashby's swan song. The film itself has a pulpy, sub-"Miami Vice" plot about an alcoholic ex-detective drawn into a...

The YouTube Next Up initiative has helped foster and train fledgling online video talent with promise, but not necessarily the training, means, or production skills to elevate their status from mild-mannered online video amateur to paid entertainment professional. First, the good people at YouTube bestowed a $35,000 check, entry into an exclusive four-day YouTube Creator Boot Camp, and the title of NextUp Winner upon 25 burgeoning new media content creators. Next, YouTube selected 16 trainers and 16 chefs to participate in the YouTube Next Chef and YouTube Next Trainer programs, which included three months of virtual classes held on Google+ Hangouts, as well as an equipment kit worth more than $5,000, filming and editing lessons, more than $10,000 worth of promotion on YouTube, and mentoring from some of YouTube’s finest content creators, including DeStorm, FreddieW, Michelle Phan, Chow.com and Billy Blanks. YouTube Global Creator Initiatives Manager Bing Chen notes “there are still millions of...

Next year’s full to bursting with exciting movies, so to help out a little, here’s our pick of 25 must-see movies out in 2012…
As 2011 draws to a close, one eye is inevitably on the treats that are lying ahead for 2012. With that in mind, we've got our line-up of, as things stands, the 25 films that are brightest on our radar.
Now, a couple of disclaimers.
There are films that haven't made the cut here simply because we don't know a fat lot about them yet, or at least not enough to get us fired up. Jack The Giant Killer, Rise Of The Guardians, Red Tails, Chronicle and Dark Shadows all fit into that category.
Plus there are the films that we suspect will turn out strongly, but what we've seen of them so far hasn't blown us away (Brave, Skyfall). Then there are the potential hidden gems (ParaNorman) we'll...

It stars international movie icons Billy Blanks and Rowdy Roddy Piper, so how bad can Back In Action be? Matt finds out...
“An action film starring Rowdy Roddy Piper as a cop, teaming up with a martial arts expert vigilante to take on the mob is obviously going to be the best film ever.”
That was the thought process that led to me ordering the DVD of Back In Action. If we consider my take on logic to be Tokyo, Back In Action is Godzilla, because it destroyed it, leaving behind only fiery chaos.
I realised that I had flubbed immediately after turning the DVD on. The disc menu offers three choices: Play Film, Scene Selection and Play Trailer. Play Trailer is a bluff. Having now seen the film I would say that’s understandable – how do you distil the essence of Back In Action into 90 seconds without showing explicit...

Born To Fight
Stars: ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin, Daniel Magder, Jaren Brandt Bartlett, Janet Kidder, Emma Grabinsky | Written by Evan Jacobs, Jack Nasser | Directed by Anne Wheeler
Former WWE superstar ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin is back with Born To Fight, aka Knockout, another direct to DVD movie for producer Jack Nasser, who both previously worked together on Damage, The Stranger and the awesome Hunt to Kill. Besides producing Nasser also co-writes, with Evan Jacobs (Doughboys), this Karate Kid-esque underdog story of a nerd who learns to box, get the girl and beat the high school bully.
So far so Karate KId right? Well yes and no. Born To Fight does follow the now typical beatdown, train, fight, win formula that was made famous by Mr. Miyagi and co. in the 80s, but it has a lot, and I mean a Lot, in common with the underrated 90′s action movie Showdown,...

So a few years back I did a Master’s course at University on Cult Film. The culmination of this was a 20,000 word dissertation. I decided that I would write it on American Martial Arts Films because, well, you know, I like American martial Arts films. Since then, it’s just been sitting here on my computer gathering cyber-dust, so I figured I’d put it out there for anyone who fancies reading an in-depth exploration of films that don’t usually get an in-depth exploration. So if you’re a bit bored and want to read me waffle on about Van Damme, Billy Blanks and Isaac Florentine – then you can download Possibly The Best Thesis You Will Ever Read below. Also, one marker gave it full marks, so it’s fucking good ok? Download It Here – Do It, You Know You Want To.

When you stop to ponder how many times Billy Blanks gets his ass kicked over the course of T.J. Scott’s dorky science fiction actioner “Tc 2000″, you seriously start to question his status as an action hero. I’m not saying that he has to coast through the entire picture without getting a few scratches on his angular puss, but it would be nice to see him completely overwhelm his decidedly outclassed opponents without getting his posterior handed to him in the process. Of course, if you shortened the action sequences, you’d realize that there’s not much of a story to speak of, no intricate plotting supporting the picture’s countless corridor-centric set pieces. The film’s only saving grace — besides watching Bobbie Phillips obliterate her enemies while wearing a ridiculously cheesy albeit realistically futuristic S&M costume — is the presence of martial arts veteran Bolo Yeung,...

The kid busting out the insane moves in Michael Jackson 's new music video " Hold My Hand " has rhythm in his blood -- because the boy is directly related to Billy Blanks -- the King of Tae Bo . 9-year-old Michael Isaac Blanks is Billy Blanks' nephew -- and the kid has been performing as an Mj wannabe for years. In fact, just last year Michael's Mj impersonation even caught the eye of " This Is It...

Fighting games have been around for ages, but it was really Capcom's "Street Fighter 2" that brought head-to-head, one-on-one brawling to the masses, and since then very little has actually changed in the genre outside of the advent of 3D. Great games have come and gone, but it's a style of game that doesn't thrive on innovation. However, with the advent of motion controllers, being able to virtually punch you friends in the face by actually swinging your fist seemed like an inevitability, and Sony Playstation's Move enabled game "The Fight: Lights Out" has brought that concept to fruition.
The Basics
In "The Fight" you create your own character that has to work his way up through the ranks of the streets through no-holds-barred, bare-knuckle street fighting. The Move controllers serve as your fists, as you try to land as many punches as possible on your opponents until they're face down in the gutter.

Legendary Tae Bo badass Billy Blanks claims his former financial managers ripped off more than a million bucks from his bank accounts ... and now he's suing them to get back the cash. Blanks filed the lawsuit today -- in L.A. County Superior Court -- against his ex-money handlers Rhenee Foster and Demetria Gutierrez . Did you know Billy Blanks was the inspiration for the design of Dee Jay? It's true. In the coin-op days, during development of "Super Street Fighter 2," Capcom Japan decided it wanted a new character for the follow-up. Capcom West's James Goddard took the initiative and sent a copy "King of the King Boxers" alongside a rough sketch and a description list of what would become our favorite "Street Fighter" kickboxer, all based on Blanks' striking image. As you'll notice below, what Dee Jay does in battle, though, has nothing to with Blanks.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis cameo is this new trailer joining a cast that includes: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts, Randy Couture, Steve Austin ,Terry Crews, Mickey Rourke, Danny Trejo, Charisma Carpenter, Gary Daniels and the late Brittany Murphy.
Like most I'd like to have seen Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal in there, but all the same for 80's throwback action this looks fantastic.
If there's a part 2, I'd like to see Chow Youn-Fat, Billy Blanks, Olivier Gruner, Don 'The Dragon' Wilson and the one and only Bolo Yeung dragged out from wherever they are and handed an AK47.

Jane Fonda is ready to make the world sweat again: On May 1, the actress will host the first-ever World Fitness Day in Atlanta's Georgia Dome. The fitness guru - who inspired the nation to "feel the burn!" in the '70s with her at-home workout videos - decided to host the event to promote "the fun and value of exercise," Fonda tells People. "It can be a determining factor in the quality of your life and it's never too late to start." More than 3,000 participants will have the opportunity to sign-up for work-out sessions that range from aerobics with Richard Simmons...
