The Canadian Screen Awards has unveiled nominations for the national film and TV prize-giving, and the CBC civil rights drama The Porter leads the film and TV field with 19 mentions in all, including for best small-screen drama.
The first Canadian drama series from an all-Black creative team, which also streams on BET+, centers on the lives of Black train porters and their families as they launch North America’s first Black labor union in the 1920s.
The TV categories, voted on by around 3,000 Canadian industry insiders, also sees the CBC series Detention Adventure and Sort Of – a Peabody award-winning show about a gender fluid young Muslim in Toronto played by Bilal Baig — nab 15 nominations each in an awards show shaping up to be a major showcase for people of color.
That follows Canadian film, and TV industry efforts to ensure diversity and inclusivity in the country’s indie production sector and prize-giving process.

FrightFest and Movie Mogul, in association with Horror Channel, challenged aspiring filmmakers all over the country to make a short horror film, but 666 Short Cuts To Hell was no ordinary film competition. Entrants had to follow a series of ‘killer’ restraints such as a maximum of 6 lines of dialogue, a maximum of 6 cast and crew members and a maximum budget of £666.
A staggering 157 entries made the grade and the overall winner will be announced at FrightFest 2013 on Sunday Aug 25 after the screening of all six films. On hand to congratulate all six finalists will be the distinguished judging panel; Horror Channel presenter Emily Booth, FrightFest director Paul McEvoy, Movie Mogul’s John Shackleton, Filmmaker Paul Hyett and journalist Rosie Fletcher. Tom Six is planning to attend subject to his commitments on Human Centipede 3.

Hammer horror actress Ingrid Pitt dies at the too-young aged of 73.
Ingrid Pitt was Countess Dracula in the British Hammer horror film of the same name. She collapsed a few days ago from heart failure and then passed away in a London hospital today.
Ingrid Pitt always reminded me of my mother - blond, European, with a thick accent, but lovely in a strong, Teutonic way that other actresses just couldn't live up to. He onscreen charisma made her perfect for playing powerful vampiric villainesses like Countess Dracula and Carmilla Karnstein.
Stephanie Blake, Ingrid Pitt's daughter, and Marcus Hearn, an official Hammer historian, had sweet things to say of Ingrid to the BBC News website. Blake says that her mother's death had come as a "huge surprise". "She could be incredibly generous, loving, and she'll be sorely missed". She added that she wanted her mother to be remembered as...
