On the face of it, 2014 has been a rather strange year for film, a step down from an annum of classics and simultaneously a slalom into the realms of adventure and discord. It is rather significant that now, more than halfway through December, most talk has turned to trailers and announced releases for next year, the long-term planning of industry giants and the hunt for the next super-franchise. It is simply continuing the trend; of the twenty highest grossing films of 2014 (so far), an eye-watering seventeen are sequels, adaptations (of source material or franchise brand), reworks, reboots or otherwise unoriginal content. Of the three left over, two were unheralded comedies. 2015 promises more of the same, with the arrival of Jurassic World, Terminator Genisys (sic), Mad Max: Fury Road as well as Avengers 2, The Hunger Games 4, Fast and Furious 7, Taken 3 and a Fantastic Four reboot. Oh yeah, and Fifty Shades of Sh Grey…...

For some time now, I have belonged to a secret society known as the League of Rueful Val Kilmer Enthusiasts. It consists of men of a certain age who adore Tombstone and Heat, and who also have a soft spot for The Doors and The Ghost and the Darkness. And, of course, Top Gun. What unites the members of the league is our affection for the actor himself, mingled with regret that Kilmer did not become the intergalactically famous star we wanted him to be. We also resent the fact that he did not make more movies like Heat while he was young and athletic enough to pull it off.
Because now it is too late. Kilmer has reached the point in his career where he is performing in a one-man show called Citizen Twain,...

Actor Dominic Cooper is best known as the singing and dancing love interest in Mamma Mia, and will be popping up now on people’s radar as Marvel’s scientist Howard Stark in Captain America. But it will be his totally absorbing and alluring dual performance as one of the House of Saddam’s most evil members and his body double (‘fiday’) in Lee Tamahori’s (Die Another Day) The Devil’s Double that will place him firmly on the map. Cooper is a mesmerising chameleon of talent as ‘The Black Prince’ Uday Hussein and his unwilling servant Latif Yahia in this extraordinary real-life story adaptation, based on Yahia’s 2003 book of the same name, that switches between comic lunacy and terror.
In 1987, military man Latif Yahia (Cooper), a former classmate of Saddam’s eldest son Uday (also Cooper) with a strikingly similar appearance, is summoned to the Presidential Palace...

They are the shock troops in the city's battle against endemic street violence – peacemakers who once lived by the gun. As a documentary on their work reaches cinemas, we visit Chicago to see the campaigners in action
On the stoop of a house on a dilapidated block in Englewood, the south side Chicago neighbourhood that tops the city's statistics for murder, drug addiction, teen pregnancy and most of other indices of social dysfunction, are eight young African-American men and two or three women. It's an oven-hot summer afternoon and the group is kicking back, drinking, shouting and laughing.
"I don't like crowd scenes," says Shango, a member of the city's anti-violence project, CeaseFire, as we pull up outside. He explains that such gatherings increase the chances of becoming a victim of a drive-by shooting.

Dominic Cooper. Need I say more? The absolutely adorable 33-year-old phenomenally portrays Uday Hussein – the notorious ”Black Prince” and son of Saddam Hussein – a reckless, sadistic party-boy with a rabid hunger for sex and brutality. Last weekend while all of the Royal Wedding hubub was clogging up the interwebs and spawning totally unrelated and nonsensical stories on some film websites, Lionsgate released a new trailer for Lee Tamahori's The Devil's Double.
The film is based on a true story and follows the life of a body double, but not just any body double, this one is a stand in for someone very famous and someone very dangerous - the son of former Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein. ”Black Prince” Uday Hussein was known for his mood swings, his violence and his excess, so this isn't the kind of job you politely turn down - instead it seems to be the kind of job you accept at gun point!
The trailer below is accompanied by the poster too, which as you can see shows the modesty...

I always have high hopes for Lee Tamahori -- coming out of the gate with a film as powerful as Once Were Warriors earns a lot of patience -- but I'm almost always disappointed. Is that going to be the case with his latest film, The Devil's Double, a lurid-looking potboiler based on a true story in which Dominic Cooper plays both Uday Hussein and the man coerced into being his safety double? Check out the trailer below and make your own prediction. Despite the fact that this is a crazy, meaty dual role for Dominic Cooper, I'm betting on disappointment once more. The movie looks to me like shiny, silly garbage. Not that it won't be entertaining -- given that the film is rated R for "strong brutal bloody violence and torture, sexual content, graphic nudity, drug use and pervasive language" it could well be a lot of fun to watch,...

I had never even heard of The Devil’s Double until its wonderfully absurd poster premiered on Tuesday, and that was more than enough to make me curious. Thankfully, a trailer has just shown up at Yahoo!, and it does a good job of fulfilling my desire to know more about the film.
I found myself with a big grin on my face from the very beginning, and it stayed there until after it had ended. This thing just looks ridiculous, but in the best way possible. You have Dominic Cooper playing Uday (son of Saddam) Hussein, as well as his double (because why not!), and they seem to be taking a more cartoonish approach to a dark figure. Dan Mecca‘s review from Sundance makes it seem like it could fall in line with what’s set up here, and I’m actually pretty excited. Seriously, any piece of...

Here's the trailer for The Devil's Double, the movie with the utterly ridiculous poster that we showed you last week. You know, the one that looked sort of like the unholy union of Piss Christ and Scarface. The trailer isn't quite as batshit crazy as the poster, but it's still pretty nuts. It features Dominic Cooper as Uday Hussein (Saddam's son), as well as his hired double, Latif Yahia, and is a study in corruption and decadence. It co-stars the knee-shakingly lovely Ludivine Sagnier, and Australian actor Philip Quast as Saddam Hussein.
For those of you counting, that's a French woman, an Australian and a Brit, all playing Iraqis. It's like a nonmagical Last Airbender up in this bitch.
Anyway, the trailer looks like the film has the potential to be manic, frenzied, opulent fun. Perhaps most promising is the fact that it's directed by Lee Tamahori (Once Were Warriors). Oh,...

Someone asked me on Facebook if Lee Tamahori’s “The Devil’s Double” is based on the true story of Saddam’s son Uday Hussein. Well, it kinda is. Sort of. Probably. Well, most of it is probably true, and most of it is probably made up, but you know, the general gist is that it’s kinda true. Or true-ish. At the end of the day, it’s a fictional account of a real guy who was, I think most people will agree, had it coming when some U.S. Army bombs crushed his miserable little face in. Love this new poster for Dominic Cooper’s new movie, Devil’s Double which is the latest from Lionsgate. It’s completely barmy but equally extremely original which makes a change from posters we’ve seen of late. The movie is based on the true story of ‘money, power and opulent decadence’.
