Sony has set moderate theatrical fall releases for two independent features, Diane Paragas’ narrative feature debut Yellow Rose and Andrew Cohn’s comedy The Last Shift which made its global premiere at Sundance. Last Shift, which Sony Pictures World Acquisitions picked up, will debut on Sept. 25, while Yellow Rose which the label’s Stage 6 Films acquired last year sans Philippines, will open on Oct. 9.
In Last Shift, two-time Oscar nominee Richard Jenkins stars as Stanley, an aging fast-food worker, who plans to call it quits after 38 years on the graveyard shift at Oscar’s Chicken and Fish. His last weekend takes a turn while training his replacement, Jevon (Shane Paul McGhie), a talented but stalled young writer whose provocative politics keep landing him in trouble. The men are worlds apart. A high school dropout who has watched life pass by his drive-through window, Stanley proudly details the nuances of the job.

It's a rare thing for any first-time director's film to be nominated for - let alone win - a Golden Globe, but Jennifer Lee's debut movie, Frozen, did just that this year. The win was a meaningful one for Jennifer, who, by her own admission, took a "circuitous" route to the director's chair. She started her career in the world of literature, working in book publishing, before going to film school at Columbia and later landing a gig as cowriter of Wreck-It Ralph. Still, the shift wasn't completely out of left field; serendipitously enough, Jennifer's dream as a kid was to become a Disney animator. Frozen gave Jennifer a unique opportunity to celebrate "wild and wonderful" girls like her childhood self and her own 10-year-old daughter, Agatha. "I was the one that would stain my dress the minute I put it on," she told us with a laugh. The...

When studios put out themed DVD collections for whatever occasion, the final result rarely does the subject in question justice. When they seek to honor independent flicks they typically just go for the most popular ones and not the best. For foreign films they’ll select the few that actually made ripples and not the underdog that had to fight for every theater screen. However, when MGM compiled its Cinema Pride Collection in honor of June being Gay Pride month they hit the nail on the head – and they hit it dead on. The collection not only features some of the favorites within the gay community but it features a few highly acclaimed heavy hitters as well. This may just be one of the best box sets a studio has ever released that isn’t based on one actor or director’s filmography. It has variety and it has quality in spades.
