In a win for animation voice actors, SAG-AFTRA members have voted to ratify a new three-year deal for television animation. In the new deal, voice actors are given wage increases and protection against AI replication of their voices.
The ratification vote came in at over 95.5% of members in support of the new agreement.
Under the new deal, voice actors (VAs) will receive a seven percent wage increase in the first year of the contract, which is retroactive to July 1, 2023. Then, they will receive a four percent increase for year two and a three-and-a-half percent increase for year three.
Regarding AI, a big concern has been studios replicating a voice actor’s voice to utilize in other projects without knowledge or compensation. It seems that they won that as well, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, “voice actor” is now a term that can only be used with human actors. The...

SAG-AFTRA members have ratified new three-year television animation contracts covering voice actors, the first to tackle the threat of artificial intelligence.
In a ratification vote that ended on Friday, 95.52 percent of members voted to support the Television Animation Agreement and the Basic Cable Animation Agreement deal reached by union negotiators and 4.48 percent voted against the deal. The performers’ union first announced that a tentative agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers on the contracts had been reached on Feb. 21.
“The foundation of this agreement was based on the feedback we got from members who work these contracts, and that remained the negotiating committee’s focus throughout bargaining. We are proud to have delivered an agreement that offers big wins in those areas,” TV animation negotiating committee co-chairs Bob Bergen and David Jolliffe said in a statement.

SAG-AFTRA members have voted overwhelmingly to approve a new TV animation contract, the guild announced Friday.
The new animation voice acting agreement was ratified by 95.52%, the guild said; total voter turnout was not revealed.
The new contract includes a 7% raise, backdated to July 1, 2023, as well as protections against so-called “artificial intelligence” software, according to the guild.
According to a summary published Friday by SAG-AFTRA, the AI provisions define the term “voice acting” as only pertaining to human beings. While the deal doesn’t forbid the use of AI to replicate human voices, the recognizability requirement that applies to performers’ rights has been adjusted to account for the fact voice actors often use voices unlike their own, the guild said.
Among those adjustments, the digital replica must “be readily identifiable and attributable to the voice actor through contracts or other regular business records, and it doesn’t have to sound like...

They’re still tiny and now they’re learning to be a little looney with a new spin on one of television’s most catchy theme songs.
Tiny Toons Looniversity, the updated take on 1990s favorite Tiny Toon Adventures, used its time at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday morning to unveil its theme song, which as you’d expect, is based on the beloved theme song from the original — but with a new twist.
Composer Matthew Janszen has taken composer Bruce Broughton’s Daytime Emmy-winning tune and remixed the original arrangement and lyrics to fit the rebooted show made for a new generation.
The voice cast features Eric Bauza as Buster, Daffy and Gossamer; Ashleigh Hairston as Babs; David Errigo Jr. as Hamton J. Pig and Plucky; and Tessa Netting as Sweety. Looniversity also brings back Tiny Toon Adventures grads Jeff Bergman, Bob Bergen, Candi Milo and Cree Summer, who...

‘The Woman King’ headlines the African American Film Critics Association’s annual list of the top 10 films of the year. The film, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, has ensemble cast led by Viola Davis which includes Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim and Thuso Mbedu as the Agojie, an all-female army of fierce warriors. John Boyega also stars as King Ghezo.
“The best films of this year prove that diverse stories – the true and the fantastical – are not only important to the culture but are equally important to the movie-making business,” said Aafca president and co-founder Gil Robertson. “Black films which make an impact on our minds and hearts are also making a sizable impact at the box office. Our top film, ‘The Woman King’, bridges the gap between telling important, heartfelt stories, and providing an entertaining experience for movie-going audiences. Minnie Mouse is, dare I say it, an iconic character. She, Mickey, and all their Disney cartoon pals have been entertaining children for generations.
For decades, Minnie was voiced by Russi Taylor. After Taylor passed in 2019, however, voice actor Kaitlyn Robrock took on the Minnie mantle and is bringing her to life on various shows as well as certain attractions in Disney's theme parks.
Earlier this month, I had the chance to speak with Robrock during Dragon Con, a 65,000-person convention in Atlanta that celebrates fandoms of all kinds, where Robrock was a guest. We talked about how she got into voice acting in general, including her jump from Adult Swim cartoons to Minnie, and what it's like voicing other characters, such as the Tusken raiders on "The Book of Boba Fett."
This interview has been lightly edited for clarity and brevity.

"C'mon guys, the Tune Squad doesn't give up!" Warner Bros has debuted the second official trailer for the long-awaited sequel Space Jam 2, also known as Space Jam: A New Legacy, directed by Malcolm D. Lee. We just featured a fun mock "30 for 30" promo this week, and the first trailer dropped back in April. In this sequel, NBA superstar LeBron James teams up with Bugs Bunny and the rest of the Looney Tunes crew to play basketball in order to escape a virtual space run by a rogue algorithm that won't let him and his family out unless he plays a game. This also stars Don Cheadle, Cedric Joe, Khris Davis, Sonequa Martin-Green, plus lots of real NBA stars; along with voice-actors Eric Bauza, Jeff Bergman, Kath Soucie, Bob Bergen, and Gabriel Iglesias making up the animated cast. When Luke Skywalker showed up on “The Mandalorian,” it certainly looked a lot like the Jedi we know and love. And we’d recognize Mark Hamill’s voice a mile away. But the actual in-the-flesh actor was Max Lloyd-Jones. Let us introduce you.
Although the London-born thespian isn’t a household name, he has a pretty solid resume, including “Adventures in Baby-Sitting,” “The Sandlot,” “iZombie,” “Switched at Birth” and “Project Blue Book.” And perhaps most interestingly, he’s credited for the role of Blue Eyes, a.k.a. the chimpanzee in “War for the Planet of the Apes.” That’s a pretty high-profile CGI-based role, so it makes sense as to why Lucasfilm might have turned to him to do some CGI acting for one of their most famous Jedis.

The news was revealed Tuesday during WarnerMedia’s unveiling of its new service during a wide-ranging presentation in Burbank, where it touted a slate that will be headlined by the streamer’s Sesame Street, which will be relocating from HBO and its on-demand platforms HBO Now/Go. A new animated series featuring the “Looney Tunes” cartoon characters and another series called “Jellystone” featuring classic Hanna-Barbera characters are both coming to HBO Max from Warner Bros. Animation, it was announced Tuesday as part of the WarnerMedia Day presentation.
The two shows are part of a larger slate of kids programming planned for the new streaming service, including two shows both greenlit from Cartoon Network Studios — “Tig N’ Seek” and “The Fungies!” — and a hybrid live-action and animated comedy called “Tooned Out” from Robert Zemeckis that is also in development.
Classic cartoons from the “Looney Tunes,” “Merrie Melodies” and Hanna-Barbera libraries will also be available for streaming on WarnerMedia’s new platform. The cartoons, over 250 episodes in all, are shorts that debuted between 1930 and 1969 during the golden age of hand-drawn animation, and all the cartoons will be available at launch.

This year, the motion picture academy made history by inviting an equal number of women and men to join. In all, 842 film professionals were invited to become part of the organization that hands out the Oscars. Compare this intake to the totals of the previous five years: a record 928 in 2018; 774 in 2017; 683 in 2016; 322 in 2015; and 271 in 2014.
While Academy Awards nominees are automatically eligible for consideration, the rest of the candidates must go through a fairly cumbersome process. A candidate must meet certain branch specific requirements before even being eligible.
For example, actors must “have a minimum of three theatrical feature film credits, in all of which the roles played were scripted roles, one of which was released in the past five years, and all of which are of a caliber that reflect the high standards of the Academy.” For writers, directors and producers they need have just two of these credits.

In its continuing push to swell the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences membership ranks, 842 artists and executives from 59 countries have been invited to join this year. The branches have increasingly actively sought eligible people to become Academy members, but the Board of Governors makes the final call.
People of color (29 percent) and women (50 percent) are among the many invites, as the Academy continues to address its long-term white-male dominance. As always, actors make up the largest branch of the Academy, but many new members also come from overseas.
In 2018, the Academy invited 928 new members.
Twenty-one Oscar winners are among the new invited members, including Guy Nattiv (“Skin”), filmmaker Jimmy Chin (“Free Solo”), Phil Lord, and Chris Miller (“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”), and 82 Oscar nominees (including newbies like Lady Gaga and “Roma” breakout Marina de Tavira). Ten of the 17 branches invited more women than men. The percentage of women...

Half of the 842 new members invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are women, the group announced on Monday.
The organization behind the Oscars also disclosed that 29% of the new invitees are people of color. Should those people accept, and they almost universally do, the Academy will have doubled the percentage of nonwhite people in their ranks in four years.
In 2015, people of color accounted for only 8% of the Academy body. In 2019, it stands at 16%, the Academy reported. As it stands, the Academy counts 8,946 active members, with 8,733 eligible to vote on the Oscars. The total membership including retired members is 9,794. This year’s number falls short of 2018’s record of 928 invitations.
New members in this round include “Crazy Rich Asians” director Jon Chu, actors Winston Duke and Gemma Chan, and screenwriters Ritesh Batra (“Photograph”), Chinonye Chukwu (“Clemency”), Park Young-soo (“Detective Dee”) and Ryo Sakaguchi (“Ant-Man and the Wasp...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited 842 new members in their annual effort to bring in new blood to the organization that hands out the Oscars. This is down from the 928 members invited last year, but 50% of this year’s number are women, inching closer to the goal of creating an even playing field between female and male members. It marks an 7% increase in female members from 2015 to an overall 32% of the entire organization.
A total of 29% of the new class revealed Monday are people of color, marking an 8% increase in that statistic since 2015. Among the new invitees, 21 are already Oscar winners and 82 are past Oscar nominees.
New members among the acting branch include recent Best Song winner Lady Gaga, who is also being invited to the music branch; Sterling K. Brown; Claire Foy; and actors ranging in age from 23-year-old Spider-Man Tom Holland to the (shamefully) never-nominated legendary French star,...

Lady Gaga, Claire Foy and Sterling K. Brown are among the 842 people who have been invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Academy announced on Monday.
The announcement came two days after the Academy’s Board of Governors spent a Saturday meeting going over the lists of prospective members drawn up by each of the Academy’s 17 branches. This marks the fourth consecutive year in which several hundred film professionals have been invited to join the Academy. This will easily push the number of active Academy members over 9,000 and the number of Oscars voters over 8,000 for next year’s Academy Awards.
As usual in recent years, the huge list of new-member invitations was heavily weighted toward women, who made up 50 percent of the invitees (up from 49 percent last year), and non-white film professionals, who made up 29 percent. The list was also heavily weighted toward international members,...

The Television Academy’s board of governors has voted vice chairman Frank Scherma to become its new chairman and CEO, a post he will take over from the outgoing Hayma Washington. The election was held Thursday night at a board meeting at which the TV Academy’s annual officer elections were also held.
Scherma, the president of RadicalMedia whose producer credits include music documentaries, Errol Morris’ The Fog of War, Broadway’s Shrek the Musical and IFC TV’s Stan Against Evil, was the lone candidate to step forward by the deadline when Washington said in October he would not seek a second term. With Emmy weekend upon them, the performer nominees gathered at the Wallis Annenberg Center for Performing Arts in Beverly Hills on Saturday night.
“We’re celebrating every attendee, because it’s the nominee reception,” Bob Bergen, co-governor of the performers peer group, told Variety. “So it’s party for everybody. It’s a bigger party, a bigger celebration.”
For those at the reception, it is a chance to savor the moment as a nominee before the awards are handed out.
“It’s like a bachelor party,” said John Leguizamo, who nominated for his supporting actor work in “Waco.” “It’s like the party before.”
Before the winners are announced on Monday night, the nominees were on hand to acknowledge their achievement for the year’s work. While the night celebrated the accomplishments of this year’s performers, the conversation often turned to Hollywood’s future in the era of #MeToo and Time’s Up.

The episodes will vary between 1 to 6 minutes in length, with Wba aiming to produce 1,000 minutes in all. All episodes will be in classical 2D animation. Time flies, doesn’t it? It seems like just yesterday I was watching Animaniacs Live, interviewing folks about Turtles and cartoons, seeing the latest in geek fashions, hanging out with American Gods, and chatting with the Kings of Con at Sdcc, not to mention chillin’ at Nerd HQ. And now suddenly it’s September, and I’ve since attended both the UK Discworld Convention and Dragon Con! Convention season: it really never stops, does it?
Despite my busy schedule, I don’t want to miss sharing any of the fantastic adventures I’ve been having with you; so first, let’s rewind to San Diego and reminisce about the summer party-party-parties, because they are a staple of Sdcc and deserve to be featured. Every year, I try to line up at least a couple of parties each night, because, let’s be frank, I just love a good party. (I...

Over 20 acting nominees swarmed the Pacific Design Center for the TV Academy's Performers Nominee Reception on Saturday night. Branch co-governor Lily Tomlin was under the weather, so the voice of Porky Pig himself (Bob Bergen, the other co-governor) did all the glad handling as TV Academy CEO Bruce Rosenblum introduced those who may give acceptance speeches at the Nokia on Monday night. Watch the video above for a snippet of the nominees parade. The only sad part is when Matt LeBlanc teases his catchphrase with a “How…” only to be followed by “..are you”, not “you doin'?” That's butter on.

As this group of Emmy nominees congregated together for an official photo Monday night in Beverly Hills, Kevin Spacey had an idea for the amateur photographers off the dais trying to snap the same shot: “Now, everyone turn around a take a selfie,” Spacey suggested. He is the expert. Spacey was the only current TV star in the famous Oscar selfie, besides ringleader Ellen DeGeneres. Top: Nominee Kevin Spacey, TV Academy governor Lily Tomlin, nominees Billy Bob Thornton, Joe Morton, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Tony Hale, TV Academy governor Bob Bergen, and nominees Minnie Driver, Allison Janney, Ty Burrell and Jesse Tyler Ferguson huddled up.

Fresh off calling Michele Obama a “tranny,” Joan Rivers sat down with CNN’s Fredricka Whitfield to talk about her new book. After some joking around, Whitfield asked legitimate questions, like if Rivers felt she was mean to celebrities, or how she could call herself an animal rights activist and wear fur on the cover of her book. It was at that point that Rivers told her she was the wrong person to interview someone who does humor, and left the set of the live interview. I get that Joan thinks being a comedienne gives her a blank check to say whatever she wants, but it doesn’t excuse her from answering to it, and reporters aren’t just there to be a part of your PR machine.
