“If we break the suspension of disbelief, we have not done our jobs,” states visual effects supervisor Dennis Berardi about “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.” In our recent webchat he continues, “Everyone’s so savvy. We just use all of the techniques all of the time and I think the audience goes along for the ride.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
The Netflix anthology series comprises eight episodes, each telling a different horror story. The collection of stories were curated by del Toro, with two being works he had written. The Oscar-winning filmmaker of “The Shape of Water” (2017) also handpicked the eight directors for the series. All the stories are dark and touch on various moral themes. Berardi explains, “When it all started to come together there was a lot of anticipation amongst the department heads about who the directors and what the stories were going to be.

[Editor’s Note: The following interview contains spoilers for “Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities” Episode 7, “The Viewing.”]
If a fake exploding head is going to look believable, you need to fill it up first. Just ask Dennis Berardi, the visual effects supervisor on “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.”
“We packed it with bits of lookalike meat and some fleshy bits. It was all stuff that wasn’t real organic. It needed to keep and fit the molds,” Berardi said.
It wasn’t the only part of this process that needed some practical glop in order to bring something terrifying to life. All of that work was in service of “The Viewing,” the Panos Cosmatos-directed episode of the Netflix horror anthology. In it, a handful of strangers are summoned by a wealthy eccentric (Peter Weller) to witness a strange addition to his collection. After a night of rare booze and Space Cocaine, the group gathers around...

Denis Villeneuve’s sweeping “Dune” and Disney’s Golden Globe-winning animated musical, “Encanto” each scored six nominations Tuesday to lead the 20th annual Ves Awards nominations (awards ceremony details are in pandemic flux). “Monster Hunter” director Paul W.S Anderson calls VFX head Dennis Berardi “an invaluable creative partner.” The two have collaborated on movies dating back to “Resident Evil.”
This time, Berardi serves as a producer on the big-screen adaptation of the Capcom video game. “There are 1400 visual effects shots in this movie, so Dennis is a key part of the movie, and I rely on him creatively,” Anderson says.
“Monster Hunter,” out now, brings fan-favorite monsters Nerscylla, Rathalos and Diablos to the big screen.
Anderson and Berardi broke down the process of creating monsters and how they used visual effects to show the scale of the beasts.
Choosing Their Beasts
Anderson: It was a three-pronged approach to choosing the monsters. Firstly, we went with fan favorites, and we worked closely with Capcom and the creators of the game to hone in on what the fans wanted to see.

Constantin Film’s “Monster Hunter,” the video game adaptation budgeted at around $60 million, will go into production starting in September, re-teaming Constantin with its “Resident Evil” star Milla Jovovich, director Paul W. S. Anderson and producer Jeremy Bolt.
Meanwhile, Constantin is still working on a “Resident Evil” reboot, the shingle’s topper Martin Moszkowicz said at Cannes.
Like “Resident Evil: the Final Chapter,” which grossed $312 million worldwide, “Monster Hunter” will shoot in South Africa, in and around Cape Town.
“The crews are great there and, at least for a European company, it’s easy to get there: Same time zone, overnight flights. We are very much in a comfort zone of production,” said Moszkowicz.
Foreign distributors should not get too excited, however. Written by Anderson, who recently delivered a new screenplay draft, “Monster Hunter” will not come onto the open market, being the subject of a worldwide studio deal, according to Moszkowicz.

Dennis Berardi, managing director and founder of Mr. X, cited Montreal’s talent pool and tax incentives as the reason the company chose the Canadian city as its next target for growth. “We now have locations in key incentivized cities and a client front-end Los Angeles location for screenings and better customer engagement,” he said.

On January 27, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter will close the book on Paul W. S. Anderson’s lucrative live-action series once and for all, but it seems the writer-director is already beginning to plot his next creative venture.
It’ll involve another project sourced from the video game industry, according to Deadline, as Anderson and producing partner Jeremy Bolt have entered negotiations to jump-start Monster Hunter at Capcom. First announced two months ago by series stalwart Ryozo Tsujimoto, Anderson is now in possession of the first script, and expressed his desire to engineer a new long-running film series based on Capcom’s fantasy RPG. An early synopsis teases, “an ordinary man in a dead end job discovers that he is actually the descendant of an ancient hero.”

I’ve been extremely curious about Guillermo del Toro’s next film project The Shape of Water. There hasn’t been a lot of official information released on it, but the film has officially started production in Toronto, Canada.
The film is described as an “other-worldly love story, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1963.” It’s also said to a “mysterious and magical journey.” The movie has an incredible cast which includes Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine, Happy-Go-Lucky), Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road, 99 Homes), Richard Jenkins (The Visitor), Doug Jones (Crimson Peak, Hellboy), Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man, Steve Jobs), and Octavia Spencer (The Help, Gifted).
There’s been some rumored info regarding the story which is said to follow a “mute janitor named Elisa (Sally Hawkins) who falls for an amphibious man who's being kept at the lab where she works. She tries to break him...

Despite not being nominated for Best Director, Louise Archambault’s Gabrielle managed to pull off what we thought was the impossible (our Leora Heilbronn has pegged the drama as the film that should win, but favored Denis Villeneuve’s Enemy as the best bet) winning Best Motion Picture at the 2014 Canadian Screen Awards (a.k.a Canadian Oscars). If the out of synch supposed “live” telecast wasn’t bad enough (all awards including the winning film were announced almost one hour prior to on twittersphere), the show’s producers gave Gabrielle winning producers Luc Déry and Kim McCraw the equivalent of end of toilette paper roll in terms of time.
The voters also choose Gabrielle‘s Gabrielle Marion-Rivard as Best Actress in a Leading Role, while the heavily favored Enemy grabbed five awards, Best Direction for Villeneuve, Best Original Score for the excellent Danny Bensi/Saunder Jurriaans pairing , Best Editing,...

When it comes to horror movies, there are few moments more iconic than this: Carrie White, standing up on the prom stage, wide-eyed and covered in blood.
Thirty-seven years later, it's the image movie fans associate most with the original Brian De Palma film, whether they've actually seen it or not. So as much as director Kimberly Peirce and her new Carrie, Chloe Moretz, want to chart their own course in the upcoming remake of the 1976 horror classic, they're also well-aware of the importance of getting moments like this just right.
That means finding their way back to the original source material (Stephen King's celebrated first novel) in order to update the chilling story for modern audiences, infusing it with new blood without losing any of its timeless impact.
In the 2013 version, Moretz stars in the role that Sissy Spacek first made famous, of a shy outcast...

In the annals of horror movie history, there are a few moments that are considered most iconic: Carol Ann sitting too close to the TV, Pinhead’s introduction in the hospital room, Regan’s vomit-filled bedside chat, Laurie Strode fighting for her life in a bedroom closet, and of course, Carrie White’s blood-filled prom night.
So, with great curiosity and, honestly, a little skepticism, I joined several other writers on the set of Kimberly Peirce’s Carrie remake in Toronto, to watch the filming of that unforgettable prom scene.
Housed inside what looked like a giant storage space, the Carrie crew had built the Thomas Ewan High School gym decorated for prom, along with the famous locker room strewn with tampons, maxi pads, hair spray and bracelets, and the interior of the White house. Carrie’s room looked like that of a young girl, rather than a teen, with...
