People Explains: Who Is Alabama Senate Candidate Roy Moore — and Does He Still Have a Chance to Win?
Almost nothing about Roy Moore’s candidacy for Senate has been without controversy.
First, he challenged incumbent Luther Strange, who had been appointed to replace Jeff Sessions when he was tapped by President Donald Trump to serve as U.S. Attorney General. During the primary, he waved a gun at an election eve campaign rally, lacked support from the Republican establishment and has called Islam a “false religion.”
But none of that scared off Alabama voters on Sept. 26, who supported Moore in the Republican primary runoff for Sessions’ vacated Senate seat.

Nearly 5,400 people have signed an online petition on Change.org calling for the pardon of the Alabama father who killed the man convicted of sexually abusing his daughter when she was a child.
However, both the prosecutor and defense attorney who worked on the case don’t believe the petition will change Jay Maynor‘s conviction of first-degree murder or the 40-year sentence he received for killing Raymond Earl Brooks in 2014.
Maynor, who pleaded guilty on Nov. 14, decided to not face trial in an effort to protect his daughter Julia, now 24, from having to recount her abuse in a courtroom,...

More than 1,300 people have signed a petition calling for the release of an Alabama man who was sentenced to 40 years in prison after fatally shooting the man convicted of molesting his daughter.
Jay Maynor, 43, pleaded guilty on Monday to the first-degree murder of Raymond Earl Brooks in 2014.
He told his daughter, Julia, that he took the plea deal so that Julia wouldn’t have to go through the trauma of testifying about the abuse she endured during the murder trial.
“Jay is not a threat to society,” the Change.org petition says. The petition is addressed to Alabama Governor Robert Bentley,...

President Barack Obama called on Americans everywhere to continue the fight for justice that the protesters in Selma, Alabama, started 50 years ago. The President spoke in front of a crowd of thousands on Saturday at the Selma 50th anniversary march. The event was organized to remember "Bloody Sunday," when more than 600 peaceful protesters fell victim to police violence as they marched from Selma to Montgomery for equal voting rights on March 7, 1965. "One afternoon 50 years ago, so much of our turbulent history - the stain of slavery and anguish of civil war, the yoke of segregation and tyranny of Jim Crow,...

Infamous 1931 miscarriage of justice close to being reversed as state government considers law to allow for pardon
Sheila Washington vividly recalls the day she first learned about the terrible events that occurred in her small town in Alabama almost three decades before she was born. She was 17 years old and, rooting around for something beneath her bed, she discovered a dusty old book that bore the town's name in its title.
Scottsboro Boy was a memoir by Haywood Patterson, one of nine young black boys who in 1931 became entangled in one of the most notorious miscarriages of justice of the Jim Crow era. Wrongfully accused of raping two white girls, the nine came close to being lynched by an angry mob, were rushed to trial in front of an all-white jury, and ended up serving many years in jail, eight of them on death row.

Pelham, Ala. -- Alabama's crackdown on illegal immigration may keep Charlie Brown and Snoopy from performing in a high school musical.
A public high school has put the production of "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" on hold after a New York licensing house that owns the rights to the play refused to submit a document required under the immigration law.
The licensing company, Tams-Witmark Music Library Inc., relented and submitted the document Friday following inquiries from The Associated Press, school officials said.
Pelham High School still must purchase the rights to the play, which can cost more than $1,200, before the show will go on.
Acting groups – even student theater troupes – must pay for the right to use scripts or risk lawsuits.
Rehearsals had been going on for weeks before the company's initial move forced teachers to pull the plug, frustrating student actors.
