As of this writing, there have been well over 400 WrestleMania matches since the event began back in 1985. Since then, countless WWE wrestlers (and even a couple celebrities) have battled it out in so many different ways and with quality that runs the gamut from unwatchable to undeniable. In what is supposed to be WWE’s biggest annual show, some matches fall short, but others rise to the occasion and put together some unforgettable performances.

First, as there are so many WrestleManias to cover, we are only going to allow one entry per event. The modern shows with two nights of festivities will only count as one combined event. Second, to keep things from becoming repetitive, there will be no match redundancies. If two wrestlers battled it out in multiple WrestleManias,...

Brock Lesnar, recognized as one of the most versatile athletes in the history of combat and entertainment sports, has been a valuable asset to WWE for years. After his last match against Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam in 2023, Lesnar has been notably absent from in-ring appearances. Despite his absence, WWE still acknowledges Lesnar, even amidst his alleged connection to Vince McMahon’s trafficking lawsuit.
Brock Lesnar
Brock Lesnar has reached remarkable milestones in his WWE career, driven by his relentless aggression and larger-than-life personality. The Iron Claw is hitting theaters and tells the tragic story of the Von Erich family, who dominated the wrestling world for two decades. We learn about the triumphs and the tragedy of one of the most significant families in professional wrestling. They are not the only interesting characters in the often time wacky world of tights and arm bars. A lot of wrestlers led exciting lives outside of the ring. Their stories are just ready for the big screen treatment. Wrestler biopics could be an interesting subgenre we didn’t know we needed.

Since DuQuan Myers died six years ago, he’s come back in ways that are mysterious and magical and hard to explain. It started the day of his funeral, when the doves that were released over his coffin refused to fly home, perching instead in the oak tree just above his grave as if witnessing a visitation. Then there was that drive to El Paso, Texas, when — not once but twice — the windshield wipers started swiping just as the satellite radio cut out midsong, switching to the tune Myers’ sister...

Exclusive: Dark Side of the Ring has become Vice TV’s most-watched show, and now the youth-skewing broadcaster is expanding the franchise.
The cable network has ordered two spinoffs – Dark Side of the Football and Dark Side of the ‘90s. The two series are in production and will join a third season of Dark Side of the Ring in 2021.
This comes after Morgan Hertzan, Vice TV’s EVP & General Manager, told Deadline in April that the network was looking to explore new strands for the franchise.
Dark Side of the Football will shine a light on stories that live in the shadows of America’s favorite sport. It will explore the sometimes-flawed men behind the masks; the coaches, teams and leagues who control their fates; and the untold story behind bizarre and tragic off-the-field events — facts that often have been hidden to shield fans from discovering unsettling truths about the game they love.

Vice TV has handed wrestling docuseries Dark Side of the Ring a supersized third season.
The youth-skewing network has given its biggest original a 14 episode order for its third season – up from ten episodes on season two and six episodes for its first run.
The show, which is co-produced with Crave in Canada, will return in 2021. The order comes after Deadline revealed in April that the network was looking for more episodes after it had become a “mega-hit” for the channel, according to Morgan Hertzan, EVP & General Manager.
The second season of the series launched at the end of March with a two-part special about the story of Chris Benoit, who in 2007, killed his wife Nancy and seven year old son Daniel before hanging himself.
Other stories this season include the murder of Dino Bravo, the controversial “Brawl for All” tournament that led to career-ending injuries, the feared career of New Jack,...

Vice TV has renewed hit professional-wrestling docuseries “Dark Side of the Ring” for a 14-episode third season, which will premiere in 2021.
We do not yet know which subjects will be covered in the supersized (Season 2 had 10 episodes) Season 3.
Last season, “Dark Side of the Ring” covered the Chris Benoit murder(s)-suicide, The Road Warriors, the murder of wrestler Dino Bravo, WWF’s “Brawl for All,” the career of hardcore wrestler New Jack, David Schultz assaulting “20/20” reporter John Stossel, the death of Jimmy Snuka’s girlfriend Nancy Argentino, Owen Hart’s tragic death at a WWF pay-per-view event and Herb Adams’ attempt to build a wrestling empire.
The Season 3 renewal news should probably come to those in the know as a formality: “Dark Side of the Ring” is Vice TV’s highest-rated show.

I’ve previously given lists here on Nerdly of the Top Ten WrestleMania matches of the 80s and the 90s, so it only makes sense to delve into the ten best Mania matches of the 2000s. So, here, on this list, will be what I feel are the best Mania battles between the years 2000 and 2009. There were some good ones, that’s for damn sure, and while some of your favourites may not be present, I’m sure you’ll agree that all of these are classics from the decade. Here we go…

Owen Hart’s “Dark Side of the Ring” episode pinned down 626,000 total viewers, counting three days of DVR viewing, with 390,000 of that total coming from the key adults 18-49 demographic. Both are new ratings records for a Vice TV telecast, according to Nielsen.
Guess what the previous record-holder was? Yeah, the prior week’s “Dark Side of the Ring.”
By this point in the story, you’ve probably figured out that “Dark Side” is Vice’s most successful series in its relatively young history, and that Season 2 has outperformed Season 1.

Dark Side of the Ring from Vice, is a show that delves into the underbelly of professional wrestling, a look at the stories that are, for a variety of reasons, coated in controversy. The first season was great, but the second season, which finished airing just last week with it’s final episode, was even better. Directed by Jason Eisener who created the show alongside Evan Husney, it is an authentic and real peek behind a curtain that is rarely pulled back this much.

I’ve admired and been a fan of Jim Ross’ work since I first heard him do commentary at the start of the 90s when I began my love affair with pro-wrestling. I was immediately drawn in by the passionate, educational and concise manner in which Jr called matches and told stories, allowing us fans sitting on the couch at home to truly Feel what was happening in those centres, gardens, arenas and domes, live. Listening to Jim Ross calling Raw each week, Pay Per Views every month, and various other shows from Mid South to WCW to WWE, and now listening to his work in Aew, has always been a joy. I’m a big fan, and so I was beyond excited when Under the Black Hat, the sequel to Ross’ first autoobiography, Slobberknocker, was announced.

So, WWE have been releasing content about the beloved Attitude Era for years. Hell, they’ve been releasing stuff about it since that era ended in around 2001. Now, in 2020, we’re seeing a change in focus with WWE releasing content about the Ruthless Aggression Era, an era that occurred in around 2003 and would last a few years. Welcome to this first episode of Nwa: Circle Squared, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and, well, let’s have the Nwa’s YouTube channel explain this:
The following is courtesy of The National Wrestling Alliance and YouTube:
Welcome to the debut episode of Nwa The Circle Squared. Since the launch of Nwa Powerrr, wrestlers from all over the globe have wanted a chance to compete in this new era of the National Wrestling Alliance. The Circle Squared was created to give these wrestlers an opportunity. This new show is hosted by legendary announcer Sean Mooney who will walk the audience through how the competition will work. The week’s contestants are Pj and Luke Hawx – a father/son team who burst on the national scene recently due to a viral video. Their opponents the team of Tyson Dean and Jeff Lewis Neal who are managed by Nikita Koloff.

Welcome back folks. So, being a fan of wrestling means you see the same conversations and discussions going on between fans, discussions that never really change. In all the time I’ve been watching pro-wrestling, for twenty-seven years, the question “what’s the best PPV ever” has come up. It’s all about opinion, really. It’s all about choice. What one wrestling fan likes, another wrestling fan might hate, and visa versa. I, however, like to make things difficult for myself, and as seen as we now have the WWE Network (wonder how much it costs…) at our disposal, a wonderful and deep service, I can easily revisit a whole bunch of shows and compile a list of what I, personally, think are the ten best WWE (or WWF) Pay-per-views ever. I won’t talk about Ecw or WCW here, or New Japan Pro Wrestling, or Aew or any other promotion.

So, fans of WWE (and wrestling in general) will likely have heard the latest news that Paul Heyman and Eric Bischoff, two mainstays of pro-wrestling for decades, have been given brand-new roles in WWE as Executive Directors of Raw and Smackdown Live respectively. These, as far as news has told us, aren’t on-screen roles, but will give Heyman and Bischoff control over their respective brands and the two men will be responsible for overseeing the creative output of each show.
This is huge news and has been greeted with more positive than negative by fans. I’m in the camp that says “yay, something new to help shake things up and possibly improve the overall WWE product” and so should everyone else be.
2019 pro-wrestling is a very different animal to the animal that growled and prowled when Heyman and Bischoff were in charge of Ecw and WCW respectively in the late 90s.

Hulk Hogan was officially welcomed back with open pythons — err, arms — by WWE on Friday at Saudi Arabia’s “Crown Jewel” pay-per-view event. The WWE Universe on Twitter seemed to have a less-accommodating response to the booking.
Below are some of the choice negative reactions.
To be fair, not everyone on the social media website was unhappy to see Terry Bollea back in the red-and-yellow — it just kind of felt that way when we looked around.

Despite political pressure, money trumps all when it comes to Vince McMahon ...
WWE finds itself at the heart of an international incident. If you've missed the news over the last week, Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, a permanent U.S. resident who writes for the Washington Times, went into the Saudi consulate in Turkey almost two weeks ago, and he never left. According to Turkish officials, Khashoggi was murdered by a Saudi hit team and dismembered.
Khashoggi has been critical of his native Saudi Arabia in his writing and reporting, especially critical of the Saudi royal family.
This is a big story. President Trump has awkwardly defended the U.S. still doing business with Saudia Arabia because of the amount of money the government spends on U.S.-made weapons.
WWE also has a large business interest with Saudi Arabia. This past spring, the company ran The Greatest...

Welcome to this week’s Nerdly Wrestling Awards! I’m Nathan Favel and I still find it weird to use exclamations when I write, because you know I sure as hell am not shouting when I imagine saying all of this in person. We have a pretty good week to cover, in some areas any-way. Here we go! I’m not shouting, by the way. It’s meant to be excitement. Aren’T You Excited!!!!!!!!!!!!
Worst Promo: Hendry’s Music Mania (Impact)
This was a pretty lousy way to waste television time.
Best Promo: Becky Lynch’s Coronation (WWE Smackdown)
Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair had a clash of words and wills that ended in an intense brawl. Lynch was made to look like a heel, but it just made her more of a face. In real people talk, Lynch is champion and Flair wanted to steal her spot-light… with passive aggression.

Welcome to this edition of the WWE Week In Review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have lots of great matches to cover in the “Top 10”, so let’s get right in here before Vince McMahon makes a deal with Saudi Arabia to have all of his wrestling cards in the desert. By the way, we will talk about the hypocrisy and other problems with the Saudi Arabia deal, very soon in a column that I’ll write this upcoming week.

Deadman’s Dead Delivery (Raw) – This was another dull Undertaker promo that cut the Deadman off at the legs, which he must be used to by now. I get why this worked in the early 1990s, but watching a 50-some-thing year old man pretend to be George A Romero’s idea of a professional athlete is losing its appeal. It was a mistake...

Match #1: Matt Sydal beat Zachary Wentz
This was a quick spurt of a match that was all about feeding a good wrestler to Sydal, who has built some momentum as a bizarre zen character, as of late. I always worry about wasting a talented fighter like Sydal in short matches like this, but since I never raised the money to buy Tna/Impact, I would suppose that it’s not my problem. I always wonder what decisions I would have made had I actually gotten the funding to make an offer to Dixie Carter. There’s a big chance that I would have been harshly rejected, but had I been able to get the company,...

John Cena spent a streak of 14 straight appearances at SummerSlam. Those 14 matches do a good job summing up his amazing career.
When you really look at it, SummerSlam is an interesting cornerstone to WWE’s year of storytelling. It’s part of the “Big Four” PPVs and while two of them revolve around gimmick matches, the other two are about how high-profile the regular matches are. WrestleMania is the climactic, explosive event that the company treats as the ultimate show of the year. They’re going to give you the biggest matches possible there. SummerSlam, on the other hand, is...big, but not That big.
Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage vs. Ted Dibiase and Andre the Giant is a huge and unique match, but nothing compared to the championship tournament that came months before it or the Hogan vs. Savage match that happened months after. Brock Lesnar vs.

Match #1: Big Bad Steve lost to Jake Strong
My Take: As matches go, this was not what you would call “ambitious”. The whole idea was to introduce Jake Strong, who is the former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Jack Swagger. Strong typically got the wrong end of the deal while working for Vince McMahon, with most of his momentum halted just as he was starting to gain some steam. Strong looks so different outside the WWE, despite having an identical look to his WWE days. It could be said that Strong’s training for Bellator has had an effect on his confidence (and that’s likely true) but I’d argue that it’s simply a thrill for any wrestler to go to work without having to run...

Despite being one of WWE's best and long-lasting talents, Chris Jericho has never truly gotten his due at WrestleMania.
Sometimes in wrestling, there’s the question of how much is enough. When Cm Punk stormed out of WWE, one of the big reasons was that he felt cheated out of being treated as a top guy. Yes, he got to be WWE Champion longer than anyone else in years, but he was always deemed less important than John Cena and his main goal, main-eventing WrestleMania, was pulled out from under him once Batista came back into the fold.
Some people side with him and feel that his anger was justified and that if he wasn’t going to reach the heights he intended to with his hard work, he had every right to leave them high and dry. Others will argue that he should have been happy with what he had.

Lexi Alexander will tackle the bizarre and horrifying story behind Chris Benoit in the biographical film Crossface. Slashfilm writes film itself will be based heavily on the book Ring of Hell: The Story of Chris Benoit and the Fall of the Pro Wrestling Industry by Matthew Randazzo V. Of course, many are familiar with the story of the WCW/WWE wrestler who was later found to have tortured and murdered his wife and 7-year-old son after all three were found dead in their home.
The book focuses mainly on Benoit's 22-year career in wrestling and how a man so well liked and known for loving his family could turn on a dime so quickly. Years later, it was shown that Benoit was likely suffering from Cte and that he had the mental functionality of an 88-year-old man with Alzheimers.
Don't expect WWE to be promoting this film, as they've censored...

Lexi Alexander will direct the Chris Benoit movie, Crossface.
Lexi Alexander (Punisher: War Zone, recent episodes of Arrow and Supergirl) has signed on as director of Crossface, the story of wrestler Chris Benoit, who murdered his wife and child before taking his own life in 2007.
Jake Goldberger and Sarah Coulter are writing the screenplay for Crossface, based on Matthew Randazzo V's book Ring of Hell: The Story Of Chris Benoit & The Fall Of The Pro Wrestling Industry. Randazzo will executive produce with Ram Getz. Alex A Letz and Tony Lee are producing.
“I was pretty certain I’d stay in TV rather than returning to the feature world, because the material just seems so much better in TV, especially in drama, but then Crossface came my way,” Alexander said (via Variety). “A heartbreaking, true story about the dark side of wrestling. … I couldn’t say no to that.

1.This Saturday, Cm Punk makes his Ufc debut as he faces off against Mickey Gall at Ufc 203 on pay per view. While I honestly will be shocked if he makes it out of the first round, I applaud him for following his dreams and wish him the best on his Mma debut. Entering the sport of Mma at his age (and I hate saying that because I am older than him.) is a pretty difficult task, not even taking into account the various injuries he’s sustained over the years as a wrestler. Whether this is his only Mma match or if he’s able to make a go at it, he’s a living example of not caring about any obstacle that prevents you from achieving your dream.

Once a much celebrated and respected wrestler working for WWE, Chris Benoit murdered his wife and son, before taking his own life, in the Summer of 2007. It is one of the darkest moments in the history of professional wrestling, and had a major impact on the product going forward, bringing the subject of concussions, what many believe to be the leading factor in this tragic event, suffered by wrestlers into sharp focus. A movie focusing on Benoit’s life and death titled Crossface, named after his submission hold the Crippler Crossface, has been rumoured for sometime now, but it seems it may actually be happening, with Green Street and Punisher: War Zone director Lexi Alexander revealing on twitter that she has signed on as director. It’s been a long time coming, but the planned biopic revolving around the death of WWE wrestler Chris Benoit is finally moving forward with Punisher: War Zone and Arrow director Lexi Alexander at the helm. Titled Crossface, the movie is based on the book Ring of Hell: The Story of Chris Benoit & the Fall of the Pro Wrestling Industry by Matthew Randazzo V.
One of the biggest stars in WWE at the time of his death in 2007, Benoit has since became best known not for his work in the ring, but because he murdered his wife and son before committing suicide. He was later posthumously diagnosed with Cte, a type of brain degeneration caused by multiple concussions which some doctors argued could have played a role in his actions.
In a recent press release, Alexander had this to say about taking the helm of Crossface (which is named after his finishing movie,...

The planned Chris Benoit biopic is moving forward with director Lexi Alexander, TheWrap has learned. The film, currently entitled “Crossface,” will tell the story of former WWE superstar Benoit as he struggles to maintain his family life even as the pressures of wrestling spin him out of control. Benoit, a former world champion wrestler, murdered his wife and son before taking his own life in 2007. He was posthumously diagnosed with Cte, severe brain degeneration often seen in NFL players, which one doctor believes is associated with his career as a wrestler. Looks like the long in development Crossface is moving forward with the Punisher: Warzone director
In 2007 the professional wrestling world was completely rocked with tragedy. When Chris Benoit and his family were found dead in their Fayetteville Georgia home. After details rose that this tragedy was in fact a double murder/suicide, the WWE quickly distanced themselves from Benoit's memory. In the years since word of a biopic have floated in and out of the Hollywood Rumor mill with nothing really ever materializing.
However Wednesday news leaked on IMDb.Com that a film is finally moving forward with Lexi Alexander as the director. Alexander seemed to confirm this news responding to fans on twitter. The film is tenativly titled Crossface, after Benoit's famed finishing submission.
Benoit who was loved by many took a leave of abscence from 2007's WWE PPV event Vengeance, claiming he had to tend to a family illness.

I cannot even begin to comprehend what Vince McMahon was thinking when he laid out WrestleMania 32. If what occurred in Dallas is not proof positive that he is out of touch with what his core fan base wants, then nothing is. He is the captain of the sinking Titanic, refusing to believe that his ship even hit an iceberg, let alone is being being sank by it.
I thought the wrestling throughout the night was solid at worst and pretty good at best, without anything blowing me away. Not the most glowing praise, but given the hotchpotch mess I was expecting going in, it actually delivered slightly beyond my expectations.
The issue – as always – was not with the in-ring action, but with the way it was booked. WWE got it wrong not just in all of the big matches, but in every single contest.

Ask Chris Jericho what he thought about Triple H before the May 21, 2001 edition of Raw Is War, and it may have been somewhat different to his feelings afterwards.
During a routine tag-team bout pitting Jericho and Chris Benoit against Triple H and Steve Austin, ‘The Game’ landed awkwardly upon striking Jericho from behind. Tearing his quadriceps muscle in one leg, Triple H promptly hit the mat in complete agony, the muscle literally rolling up his limb.
To his credit, the man was somehow able to finish the match. Perched atop the announce desk, he even received Y2J’s trademark ‘Walls Of Jericho’ finishing hold, which must have been excruciatingly painful to absorb.

WrestleMania, cultural phenomenon that it is, has become a stage where the moments are made that last forever, and even though fans have come to pretty much expect classic matches and big-time appearances from superstars, it’s those moments that end up making the show.

Way back in the 1980’s, tag-team wrestling was a vital part of the then-World Wrestling Federation’s product. There’s just something so simplistic about good tag wrestling, but such directness really doesn’t detract from the excitement tandem matches can provide.
Despite the fact that tag team wrestling has had its importance diminished by WWE management in recent times, wrestling fans have a great fondness for doubles bouts. Apparently, those in charge of the company don’t feel tag wrestling is quite as interesting as it once was, because there’s been a real lack of emphasis on the style in the modern era.
Arguably the last truly great period for tag wrestling in WWE fell when Los Guerreros were tearing it up in matches against the likes of Chris Benoit, Kurt Angle, Rey Mysterio, Edge, Rhyno and Team Angle on Smackdown in 2002-2003.
Since then, things haven’t been the same,...
Way back in the 1980’s, tag-team wrestling was a vital part of the then-World Wrestling Federation’s product. There’s just something so simplistic about good tag wrestling, but such directness really doesn’t detract from the excitement tandem matches can provide.

“The boyhood dream has come true”, gushed Vince McMahon as Shawn Michaels defeated Bret Hart to become the new WWF Heavyweight Champion. The match-concluding ‘Sweet Chin Music’ at WrestleMania Xii has been played time and time again, and for good reason; it was an extremely heartfelt moment.
In similar fashion, seeing genuine tears roll down the cheeks of both Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero at the close of WrestleMania Xx was seriously emotional. Fans couldn’t help but join in, recognising the hard work and sacrifice the pair had consistently made to get to that point.
Moments such as those outlined above are undoubtedly ones consumed by sheer, unadulterated joy. When these moments occur, fans can’t help but punch the air in delight. Unfortunately, WrestleMania has also been home to moments after which those same fans want to punch holes in the nearest wall out of frustration.

Earlier today, New Japan Pro Wrestling announced the return of the Super J Cup tournament after a seven-year absence. The reintroduction of the classic event can only be seen as a response to WWE’s upcoming Global Cruiserweight Series tournament.
First held in 1994, the Super J Cup is traditionally a one-night, single elimination tournament involving the best junior heavyweights from New Japan and a variety of affiliated promotions. The inaugural event was won by Wild Pegasus (Chris Benoit) and is widely considered one of the best wrestling shows in history. Since that time, there have been four subsequent Super J Cups, with the legendary Jushin Liger winning in 1995 and 2000, and current Noah star Naomichi Marufuji winning in 2004 and 2009.
No competitors have been announced for the tournament yet, but a host of the world’s best wrestling promotions will be sending talent. In addition to New Japan, the Super J...

One topic that divides wrestling fans in 2016 is whether WWE should go back to a brand split or keep the roster together.
The first WWE brand split occurred in 2002 when WWF had hired a bunch of ex-wcw & Ecw stars along with the contracts they adopted from the 2001 WCW purchase.
Initially, the two rosters were positively stacked as Raw had Steve Austin, Booker T, The Undertaker and the nWo while SmackDown had Hulk Hogan, The Rock, Chris Benoit, Edge and Kurt Angle. The idea was for both shows to stay separate, except during pay-per-view events where there would be Raw matches and SmackDown matches and, in time, they could have inter-promotional ‘dream matches’.
Sadly, in the end it didn’t quite work out and the rules of the brand split were adhered to less and less as the years went by. Eventually in 2012, the two brands merged and the...
