With the Syrian uprising dominating world events and the anniversary of the Arab Spring upon us, I am reminded of a Star Trek novela published last year that was inspired by the overthrow of Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak. Christopher Bennett’s Star Trek Typhon Pact: The Struggle Within did what Star Trek has done for nearly 50 years, take real social and political events and explore them through the characters and crews of the Star Trek universe. Just as Gene Roddenberry did with the Cold War and the Klingons, Bennett, in his short novella, delves into the Egyptian uprising against the Mubarak regime.
We find in Bennett’s e-book Jean-Luc Picard and the Enterprise crew involved in negotiations to entice the Talarians to join with the Federation in an expanded version of the Khitomer Accords, which had solidified Federation-Klingon relations in the late 23rd century (see Star Trek VI: the Undiscovered Country...

The Department of Temporal Investigations (Dti) exists to keep the timeline secure. Agents Lucsly and Dulmur (characters introduced in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode Trials and Tribble-ations) have investigated many incidents of time travel and alternate realities within the Federation. But when a series of events threatens their current timeline and someone starts erasing people from history, the Dti agents find themselves up against a future adversary with an unknown agenda.
The novel, which also sometimes reads like a bunch of short stories, details Lucsly and Dulmur’s first meeting and subsequent partnership with in Dti. It also weaves a vast number of known time travel adventures from all of the Star Trek series (and finally puts an end to the Temporal Cold War story line from Star Trek: Enterprise‘s first 2 seasons). I recognized all of these instance, and was rather impressed with the level of detail...

Britain's Prince Charles' former car is going to be melted down to create cufflinks. The Prince of Wales' prized DB6 Volante Aston Martin will be melted down by a London firm called Tmb ArtMetal - which specialises in creating jewellery and works of art from the parts of famous cars, trains or aeroplanes - to be made into 200 pairs of cufflinks each costing £995. The cuffs will then be finished with 18ct gold and sold at auction with all profits going to The Prince's Trust. One version of the cufflinks will be an exact miniature sculpture of the DB6 Volante, while the other will replicate the car's wheel "spinners" - the quick-release fixings securing its wheels. Christopher Bennett, managing...
