Kit Hesketh-Harvey, the musician, composer and screenwriter, has died suddenly aged 65.
The multi-talented entertainer, who performed for King Charles, enjoyed a prolific career that included writing the screenplay for director James Ivory’s 1987 film Maurice, starring a young Hugh Grant in one of his first onscreen roles.
His agent told The Independent he died unexpectedly but peacefully, while listening to Radio 3 and preparing for a Kit & McConnel show.
He was the brother of Sarah Sands, journalist and former editor of the Evening Standard. His death comes as a double blow to the family during an ongoing search for Ms Sands’s former husband, British actor Julian Sands, who went missing two weeks ago while hiking in southern California.
Ms Sands spoke of the shock over her brother’s death. She told The Independent: “Kit was dazzling – clever, original, funny, kind. The last time I saw him he was busy mapping...

One of the UK’s most powerful talent agents has blasted British TV as an institution that’s run by “clever people making clever rubbish.” Peter Bennett-Jones, founder of Endemol-owned Tiger Aspect (Mr Bean, Billy Elliot), said last night at the annual BAFTA TV Lecture in London that “shaking things up needs to be a higher priority.” He added: “Original and polemical programming is in the casualty ward … My plea to writers is to pursue your passion, agitate away. We should be out there provoking and causing offence.” Bennett-Jones said that he disagrees with the priorities that Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt and News Corp Deputy COO James Murdoch laid out in their recent Edinburgh TV Festival speeches. Schmidt said that programming decisions should be based on statistical analysis of viewing habits and data while Murdoch said they should be based on profitability. “I’m not saying ignore the data,...

British actor Rowan Atkinson has been discharged from hospital after sustaining a fractured shoulder blade in a car crash this week (beg01Aug11).
The 56-year-old funnyman was hospitalised after crashing his luxury McLaren F1 supercar, which spun off the road, hitting a tree and a road sign before catching fire. Atkinson left the medical facility in Peterborough, England in a wheelchair on Friday and was driven away in a private ambulance.
The accident occurred as Atkinson was driving home following work on his new movie Johnny English Reborn, in which he plays a hapless secret agent.
The Mr. Bean star's agent Peter Bennett-Jones tells Britain's Daily Mirror, "I understand he has a fractured shoulder blade which is very painful and why he needed to stay in overnight. He is shaken but not stirred. I think he was in pain and had painkillers.
"The car has been removed and I'm sure he won't want it to be written off. He will want to get it repaired straight away...

"The Killing" was nominated in the category along with "Mad Men" and "Boardwalk Empire" in addition to musical drama "Glee". The show, which has original title "Forbrydelsen", was voted the best international shows to air in the U.K., after being acquired by BBC digital channel BBC Four.

ITV were big winners at last night’s Royal Television Society Awards.
TV presenting duo Ant McPartlin and Dec Donnelly scooped the prize for Best Entertainment Performance, while The X Factor lifted the trophy in the Entertainment Programme category.
The I’m A Celebrity presenters beat Graham Norton and Charlie Brooker and the men, whose success follows them receiving the Most Popular Entertainment Presenter award at the National Television Awards in January, said although they were thrilled to win they were exhausted because they ‘gate crashed’ as many television and radio stations as they could the night before to raise money for Comic Relief.

“It was a full, long evening so we’re a bit tired. Hopefully,...

This is me being lazy. Sorry, but I might have the flu.
I’m going to let the studio tell you about this one …
Inspired by a true story, The Boys Are Back is a deeply moving, wryly confessional tale of fatherhood, that intimately evokes both the fragility and wonders of family life. It follows a witty, wisecracking, action-oriented sportswriter (Academy Award® nominee and Golden Globe® winner Clive Owen) who, in the wake of his wife’s tragic death, finds himself in a sudden, stultifying state of single parenthood. With turbulent emotions swirling just below the surface, Joe Warr throws himself into the only child-rearing philosophy he thinks has a shot at bringing joy back into their lives: “just say yes.” Raising two boys – a curious six year-old (Nicholas McAnulty) and a rebel teen (George MacKay) from a previous marriage — in a household devoid of feminine influence, and with an unabashed lack of rules,...
