Let us know your favourite pop promos of the decade
What makes a great pop video? Explosive action? Mind-bending animation? Bling? Bottles of Cristal? Being ripped off in the latest TV advert? One viewer's masterpiece is another's dross, and they will never agree.
And there are simply more videos now than there used to be. In the 70s and 80s, quality videos stood out because there wasn't much else around – Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, Jacko's Thriller and Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer were events. Now videos cram every corner of YouTube, blogs and TV channels from Viva to MTV.
In the noughties, having a director for your video wasn't enough – they had to be a big name. Hype Williams was one of the busiest, shooting videos such as Kanye West's Gold Digger and Stronger, Beyoncé's Check on It and Coldplay's Viva La Vida. Other directors such as Mark Romanek »

The film industry may be currently going through a crisis, but it's got nothing on the music biz. Over the past decade, there was a paradigm shift in the industry and huge, fundamental changes in the way people discover, buy and listen to music. Ten years ago, the idea that everyone would cease going to record stores to flip through plastic discs and would instead buy music digitally, completely devoid of a physical medium, only existed in a fringe world called Napster.
Now record stores are all but gone, and the album as an art form exists only in the fringe world of purists. We've become slaves to the mp3 single and the little sweatshop-produced devices we rely on to listen to them. The new Luddite is just the poor iPhoneless wretch who manages to get by with only a BlackBerry.
The volume of music has changed too, in both decibels and quantity. »

Outkast member Big Boi has revealed tentative plans for the duo to release a new studio album in 2010. The rapper told Billboard the record would follow solo albums from both him and partner Andre 3000 next year, their first album since 2005's Idlewild. "This is all in the next year or so, starting with my album coming at the top of the year, Dre 3000 right after me," he said. "And when the solo albums come out, depending on (more) »

If you weren't familiar with Paula Patton before Precious, you should get acquainted with her in the new issue of Giant magazine.
Being called "the next Halle Barry" is a great compliment, especially for a relatively new actress like Paula.
Her first film was 2005's Hitch and she's only been in a handful since then. Fortunately for her, she's been able to land parts in fairly high profile films like Idlewild from the men behind Outkast and now in Precious, which broke box office records this weekend.
Patton plays Ms. Rain, a lesbian teacher that helps Precious to question her life's worth and her sexuality. In this great video of interviews, Paula discusses her love of Gabby Sidibe (the actress who played Precious) and why it was important that her character be a lesbian.
With so many other stars in the film, it's important not to ignore Paula Patton — she's »

Mariah Carey's "H.A.T.E.U." video shoot on Malibu beach, California indeed has been wrapped. However, director Brett Ratner still needs another shoot and thus took Mariah and his crew to New York City on November 6 for another filming process.
Unlike the Malibu set which witnessed Mariah sporting a white bikini and black silk swimsuit, the NYC video shoot sees her rocking a black leather jacket matched with a pair of heeled boots. Premiere date for the video is still unclear.
"H.A.T.E.U." is the third single taken from Mariah's latest studio project called "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel". Its official remix is produced by Jermaine Dupri and features additional verses from OutKast's Big Boi, Gucci Mane and Oj Da Juiceman.

The video is directed by Mariah's long time collaborator Brett Ratner and has been wrapped on November 4 during which he tweeted a picture of him and Mariah. Recently, Brett reunited with Mariah when directing her "Obsessed" video.

Director F. Gary Gray began his career creating music videos for several big name R&B and hip-hop artists in the early 90s, including Ice Cube, Tlc, and OutKast. In 1995, Gray made a big screen splash with a little stoner comedy called Friday, starring a pre-Rush Hour Chris Tucker and an up-and-coming Ice Cube, a friend of Gray's. Friday was a surprise hit, opening the doors for future high profile projects such as The Negotiator, 2003's The Italian Job remake, and Be Cool. This week, Gray continues his strong track record in the crime/action genre with Law Abiding Citizen, and »

Atlanta — A downpour couldn't cool Atlanta's excitement for pioneering Southern hip-hop group Goodie Mob's reunion show on Saturday night, which was billed as "Remember Atlanta." Cee-Lo, Khujo, Big Gipp and T-Mo hit the stage at Masquerade Music Park for the first time as a complete unit in a decade (although the group did not formally disband until 2002).
And while Cee-Lo may have had a highly successful career both as a solo act and with the Grammy-winning duo Gnarls Barkley, each member of the group got plenty of shine.

Can Andre 3000 become one of the few MCs to make three consecutive Hottest MCs lists? Make no mistake about it, Andre always epitomizes all the main criteria the MTV News Hip-Hop Brain Trust analyzes: massive skills, impact — he has that covered. Andre 3000 is one of the names that fans and rappers alike continually count among the best.
You'll have to go back to the George Bush — Herbert Walker, that is — era to find the last time Three Stacks kicked a verse that wasn't amazing or somewhere in that neighborhood (Ok, maybe the very early Clinton years). His words are always nourishing and keen, rich with bluster and insight, stylistically separating him from the pack. And when he expresses himself, the entire hip-hop community applauds his efforts. Off the mic, Dre is one of the most unique, »

Collaborating with Jay-z, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Eminem apparently are not enough for Drake as he is now hitting studio with Justin Timberlake. The Canadian rapper revealed the matter in a phone chat with DJ Drama on Hot 107.9 radio, stating he also works with Timbaland.
In addition, Drake shared that his first studio album "Thank Me Later" will have contribution from Sade and OutKast's Andre Benjamin a.k.a Andre 3000. "I'm trying to make this song happen, man, It'd mean the world to me. I'm trying to make this happen for my album. It'd be me, Andre 3000 and Sade," he said.
"I know that I have to carry the majority of the weight by myself," Drake explained further as quoted by MTV. "The features have to be carefully picked. I could call on every favor that's owed to me or to everybody that's reached out and said they wanna work. »

The legend of Jimi Hendrix lives on!
There's a new feature film being planned by Legendary Pictures about the icon. But the big question, will this project being written by Max Borenstein see the light of day?
From Lenny Kravitz to Outkast's Andre Benjamin, there have been many numerous attempts to make a Hendrix film starring musician-actors to no avail. The problem? Getting the musician's estate, run by his stepsister Janie Hendrix, to approve the projects.
How is Legendary going to succeed this time? Their plan is to develop the movie first, then hope and pray the estate will give the project its blessings. But Legendary has been in talks with the estate because without the music featuring the genius of Hendrix, there will be no movie. »

Whenever I hear of someone wanting to make a Jimi Hendrix biopic, I think of comments from Dune about men drinking drinking the Water of Life. "They tried and failed?" "They tried and died." No one has kicked it trying to put Hendrix on film, but no attempt has even come close to getting it right, either. Now, according to Variety, Thomas Tull of Legendary Pictures, the man who came up with and produced the guitar god documentary It Might Get Loud, is trying his own Hendrix film. Does making one guitar documentary make this film any more likely to succeed? Probably not. The Hendrix estate is supposedly pretty damn protective of its famous son, which begs the question of how the Hendrix likeness ended up in Guitar Hero and how the pretty awful TV movie Hendrix got made, but still. Andre Benjamin wanted to make a film; so did »

As rock heroes go, they don't come more legendary than guitar master Jimi Hendrix - so it is only fitting that the production house Legendary Pictures are looking to develop a film about his life.Although many attempts have been made before to bring the icon to the screen, producers hope that they can work in conjunction with Experience Hendrix which runs his estate to breathe life into the script penned by documentary writer Max Borenstein. It is now 40 years on from Hendrix's renowned performance of Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock, and with films such as Saving Woodstock and also The Boat That Rocked celebrating the period and its music, a biopic of the '60s rocker would nestle well into the renewed interest in the psychedelic summer of love.So who should play the man who launched a thousand attempts at playing guitars with teeth? After being pushed back a few times, production is finally finished on Lil Wayne's Rebirth album, and it's ready to hit the stores.
"Expect great music. That's all I ever want them to expect from me," Wayne told us after the MTV Movie Awards.
"I wanted to grow and show my growth as well," he added. "It's a difference from when you go in a room and come out and you're better and everyone says, 'How did you do that?' So with this album, I wanted everyone to see my growing pains."
Back in April, two of the producers on the album, Cool and Dre, told MTV News that the LP would have a combination of rock and rap.

Pop singer Christina Aguilera has been cast in her first feature film titled Burlesque in development at Screen Gems. The film is a contemporary musical where Aguilera will play an ambitious smalltown girl with a big voice who finds love, family and success in a Los Angeles neo-burlesque club. Burlesque is being pitched as Moulin Rouge meets Cabaret, using established songs that will be updated and worked into dance numbers. Former actor Steve Antin will also be making this his feature directorial debut after helming the straight-to-dvd thriller Glass House in 2006 and the Pussycat Doll's music video for "Sway." While this is obviously inspired by Cabaret, I can't help but think of Idlewild from 2006, which was a musical that tried to capitalize on the talent and success of Outkast members André 3000 and Big Boi, but flopped in the end. Variety says the script for Burlesque was originally written »

DVD Tuesday April 28th, 2009 Battle in Seattle, 2008 Loosely based on the Wto (World Trade Organization) Ministerial Conference of 1999, Battle in Seattle creates a multiple protagonist perspective during the five days of protest within the streets of Seattle. While making his directorial debut, Stuart Townsend (actor turned director) apparently had a lot to say about the events surrounding the Wto conference, as he not only directed this film, but also wrote and produced it. For a first time director, Townsend ultimately did a good job, as the films execution worked on multiple aspects in production: from writing to directing. In fact, I believe it is the writing of Battle in Seattle that truly captures the sentiment of the film. While the Wto protest actually took place in November of 1999, Townsend’s capability to create semi fictional, yet realistic characters around a true event brings extra vulnerability to audiences, as everyone is »

Lil Wayne's rock-inspired album "Rebirth" once again has been delayed. After being pushed back from June 9 to June 16, the record is now targeted to hit U.S. market on June 23, according to Rap-Up.
With the new release date, Weezy's new effort will no longer face off Ashley Tisdale's sophomore set "Guilty Pleasure". Instead, it will go head-to-head with LeToya Luckett's next installment "Lady Love".
However, the newest date is yet to be confirmed by the rapper's label. And, rumor swirls that another pushback may be set again for the record.
In related news, Cool & Dre, who is in charge to produce some tracks in Lil Wayne's new effort, comes out with details of the album's materials during an interview with MTV. "It's almost like where OutKast was when they made 'Aquemini'," Cool says. "It's still a rap album, but was it really a rap album compared to all »

Andre Benjamin, who is also known as Andre 3000, was arrested in his home state of Georgia on Saturday, March 28 for speeding. He reportedly drove his 2007 Porsche Carrera 109 mph in a 65 mph zone.
News on his arrest was first reported by TMZ. It was claimed in a report on the site that the rapper, best known for his work in the music group OutKast, was taken to the Henry County Jail. There he took a mugshot before then posting $1,200 bail. He was eventually released a few hours later.
Confirming Andre's arrest, Capt. Jason Bolton of the Henry County Police told Atlanta's Wsb-tv, "He checked that speed on his laser device which showed 109 miles per hour. Traveling that fast along I-75, you're passing vehicles almost like they're standing still. And it's an accident waiting to happen."
According to Capt. Jason, by the time his ride was stopped by police, Andre told them »
