DreamWorks Animation has delivered a Halloween treat: gateway horror series “Fright Krewe” has been renewed for a second season.
Look for the supernatural war brewing in New Orleans to continue when Season 2 comes to Hulu and Peacock in 2024.
“Fright Krewe” is Created and Executive Produced by Eli Roth & James Frey. The series is also Executive Produced by Joanna Lewis and Kristine Songco.
In the 10-episode series, ” An ancient prophecy and a Voodoo Queen put misfit teens in charge of saving New Orleans from the biggest demonic threat it’s faced in almost two centuries. But, honestly? Saving the world might be easier than becoming friends.”
The first season of 10 episodes recently debuted on Hulu and Peacock on October 2. In my review, I wrote that the inaugural season “offers enough supernatural charm, heart, and whimsy to endear Soleil and her friends to viewers, hoping to see their ascension to full hero in the future.

See how a magic chair became one of the major characters in Eli Roth’s supernatural family film.
One of the more unusual films to come out this fall was The House with a Clock in its Walls, based on the beloved 1973 children’s novel by John Bellairs. What made the movie more interesting than usual was the fact that it was directed by Eli Roth, the horror auteur best known for hard-r gorefests such as Hostel and The Green Inferno.
Making his first PG-13 movie, Roth wanted to specifically channel the spirit of classic Amblin films from the 1980s (especially since the movie came out under the Amblin banner). His take on the story -- about an orphaned boy who goes to live with his warlock uncle in a house hiding a terrible secret -- was aided tremendously by stellar performances from Jack Black as the...

Based on a mystery novel written by John Bellairs and illustrated by Edward Gorey, The House With a Clock in Its Walls follows a young Lewis (Owen Vaccaro) who heads off to live with his uncle Jonathan (Jack Black), not knowing that Jonathan is a warlord and his neighbor Florence (Cate Blanchett) is a witch. Published in 1973, the original novel was highly-acclaimed; it was first adapted for the small screen in 1979. Nearly 40 years later, Eli Roth directed the brand new version, which has received mixed to positive reviews from critics. Inspired by the movie, we wondered what other major horror adaptations are heading to the big screen. Here are three that sound very promising. Eli Roth has never thought of himself as a horror director, so the Hostel and Cabin Fever director’s first PG-rated and kids-friendly movie, The House with a Clock in Its Walls, isn’t that surprising of a choice for the filmmaker. As Roth sees it, his previous movies led him to directing Amblin’s adaptation of John Bellairs‘ novel, published in 1973. This is […]

‘Ladies in Black.’
Bruce Beresford’s Ladies in Black opened impressively in Australian cinemas last weekend, considering that the primary target audience – mature cinemagoers – don’t normally rush out to see films in the first weekend.
Benefiting from glowing reviews and copious publicity, the 1959-set comedy-drama starring Julia Ormond, Angourie Rice, Rachael Taylor, Ryan Corr, Alison McGirr, Noni Hazlehurst and Vincent Perez, looks set for a long run.
Perhaps surprisingly, the Sony release did not open at No. 1. That honour went to Universal’s spy comedy Johnny English Strikes Again, seven years after the release of Johnny English Reborn.
Dark comedy/fantasy The House with a Clock in Its Walls opened in top spot in the Us but under-performed here while Warner Bros’ animated adventure Smallfoot began reasonably well, positioned to cash in on the school vacation.

Box Office: ‘House With a Clock in Its Walls’ Edges to $24 Million Debut, ‘Fahrenheit 11/9’ Stumbles
“The House With a Clock in Its Walls” is on its way to a No. 1 debut at the box office with an estimated $24 million from 3,592 North American locations.
The remaining top five slots should go to box office holdovers, with three other R-rated films opening in the $1 million to $3 million range.
“House” stars Cate Blanchett and Jack Black as an eccentric witch and warlock who live next door to each other and who play host to 10-year-old Lewis (Owen Vaccaro), who goes to live with his Uncle Jonathan (Black) in Michigan after his parents die. Eli Roth directed the fantasy pic from a script by Eric Kripke, adapted from the children’s book of the same name by John Bellairs. The Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment film is coming in above earlier estimates, which had placed it in the $18 million to $20 million range. It took in an estimated $7.8 million on Friday.

Amblin Entertainment’s The House With a Clock in its Walls from Universal drew $840K from 2,700 locations on Thursday night.
Note, kids are still in school, so the play for House will be largely from Saturday and Sunday matinees. Thursday’s take is under such spooky family pics like Fox’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, another kids book feature adaptation like House, which earned $1.2M on its Thursday before winning the Sept 30-Oct. 2, 2016 frame with $28.8M. House is above Sony’s Goosebumps which drew $600K at 2,567 theaters on its Thursday night before notching a $23.6M weekend win in mid-October 2015. House is expected to be in the same $20M+ opening neighborhood as those movies with a $20M-$22M take from 3,592 locations. House‘s production cost is far cheaper than Miss Peregrine, an estimated $40M to $110M. House is also under Goosebumps’ $55M pricetag before P&A.

The House with A Clock in its Walls’ young lead, Owen Vaccaro, may only just breaking through in his acting career, but the young actor has already starred alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest names. Taking on the role of Mark Wahlberg’s son Dylan in Daddy’s Home and its sequel, he went on to star in Mother’s Day alongside the likes of Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts and Kate Hudson. In Eli Roth’s latest dark and polished ghoulish adventure, Vaccaro gets to dabble in magic alongside Jack Black and Cate Blanchett, not a bad start for the budding actor.

Chicago – “The House With The Clock In Its Walls” is a surprisingly restrained and endearing haunted house pic for kids just getting rid of their training wheels. It’s all a spooky atmosphere with cobwebs galore, creaking doors, a stained glass window which changes on its own, and a library of books which at times resemble the avifauna predators from the Hitchcock classic “The Birds.”
Young orphan Lewis (Owen Vaccaro) is sent to live with his eccentric kimono wearing uncle Jonathan (Jack Black) in small town Michigan after his parents are killed in a car crash. He soon discovers that his uncle is a warlock, albeit a mediocre one. But his next door neighbor, Mrs. Zimmerman (Cate Blanchett), is a much more powerful purple clad witch. Together, they trade insults like Ralph and Alice on”The Honeymooners,” but with knowing glances as they maintain a solid but platonic friendship. Jack...

Having director Eli Roth, the modern architect of ‘Torture Porn’ helm a child-friendly, PG-rated horror-comedy, seems like a head-scratcher. And while Roth, best known for Green Inferno, Hostel, and Cabin Fever (not to mention this year’s outstanding Death Wish remake) fails to bring much vision or personality to The House With A Clock In Its Walls, his adaptation of a Young Adult novel by John Bellairs is still just enough fun to recommend. Owen Vacarro stars as 10-year-old Lewis Barnavelt, who travels to New Zebedee, Michigan in 1955 to live with his eccentric Uncle Jonathan Barnavelt (Jack Black) after having recently been orphaned. As soon as he arrives, things get a bit weird. Uncle Jonathan goes about at night banging at the walls with an axe. Turns out he’s a warlock and when he bought the house years ago, he was told there’s a clock t that he...

If you want to scare the kiddies but still keep them giggling, Jack Black is your man. This peerless comic actor can do more with an arched eyebrow than a crazy-car stuffed with clowns, and it’s that old Black magic that ignites The House With a Clock in Its Walls, a supernatural tale set in 1955 in New Zebedee, Michigan (a town with its very own haunted mansion). The School of Rock star plays Jonathan, the warlock who occupies the premises; when he isn’t trying to find the source...

This weekend is looking to be one of the worst of the year with a top twelve that would be hard pressed to deliver a combined $80 million. The weekend's new crop of releases will be led by Universal's The House with a Clock in Its Walls, which will easily take the weekend's top spot. Meanwhile, Michael Moore's new documentary Fahrenheit 11/9 should manage a top ten finish while Amazon Studios's Life Itself becomes the distributor's widest debut yet, though a lack of awareness and troubling reviews won't likely help the film's debut. Looking to top the weekend is Universal and Amblin Entertainment's The House with a Clock In Its Walls. Debuting in 3,592 locations, the adaptation of John Bellairs and Edward Gorey's children's story was directed by Eli Roth and studio expectations currently peg the film at a debut around $20 million with tracking coming in at $22 million.

For a director mostly known for gory cannibal/torture flicks like Hostel and The Green Inferno, Eli Roth has gone on to helm one of his finest features yet with an Amblin family fantasy! But before horror hounds run for the hills screaming “sell-out!”, The House with a Clock in Its Walls is far from the plastic PG fright-laden picture some might imagine, given the oddly Christmassy “Harry Potter for horror fans” posters. Based on a book by John Bellairs, Roth and screenwriter Eric Kripke’s gaudy haunted film fun-house is bursting with a firework display of vibrant concepts, riveting fantasy dread, necromancy, ghouls and squirmy purple tentacles. All a young horror fan could hope for and far creepier than the demon nuns and slender men of recent “grown-up” genre hiccups.

Arriving into theaters this weekend is director Eli Roth’s The House with a Clock in Its Walls, his adaptation of John Bellairs’ popular children’s book centered around a young orphan named Lewis Barnavelt (Owen Vaccaro), who goes off to live with his estranged uncle Jonathan (Jack Black), only to learn his new guardian is a warlock, and that the world around him is filled with endless magical possibilities. But when a world-ending threat looms over them, it’s up to Lewis, his uncle Jonathan, and their supernaturally inclined neighbor, Mrs. Zimmerman (Cate Blanchett), to save the day.

Jack Black and Cate Blanchett star in this uninspiring tale of a lonely, recently orphaned boy with supernatural skills
Shockmeister Eli Roth takes on something cosier and comfier than usual with this family-oriented movie about an orphan boy who goes to live with his eccentric and mysterious uncle in a spooky old-timey house, full of clocks. It is adapted by screenwriter Eric Kripke from a children’s fantasy novel published in 1973 by the Us author John Bellairs. But, in the larger and more obvious sense, it is basically another post-Potter, post-His-Dark-Materials knockoff, machine-tooled for the tweenie fanbase, about a kid called Lewis (Owen Vaccaro), heartbreakingly lonely and well-mannered, with a quasi-Brit bowtie and sporting an annoying pair of goggles for no very compelling or amusing reason.

The second half of September will be a slow period for the box office, as studios are expecting that “Venom” and “A Star Is Born” will take up most of the audience interest when they arrive in October. That said, Universal and Amblin are sending in an interesting contender in the form of “The House With a Clock in its Walls,” the first PG-rated film from gory horror director Eli Roth.
Based on John Bellairs 1973 Ya novel of the same name, “Clock” is a film that takes several pages from the classic Amblin dark fantasy films of the 1980s, like “Gremlins” and “The Goonies,” designed to give kids a good scare. Compared to the other Halloween titles that will be on offer next month, the film’s fright factor sits somewhere between the sillier “Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween” and the very much not-for-kids “Halloween” sequel.

Timing really is everything.
That seems especially true for Universal Pictures’ “The House With a Clock in Its Walls” as a mid-teens launch looks to be enough to top the domestic box office. After “The Meg” and “Crazy Rich Asians” led a roaringly successful August, the rest of September looks muted with just a few wide releases on the horizon.
Universal and Amblin Entertainment’s “The House With a Clock in Its Walls” hopes to earn between $18 million and $20 million when it launches in 3,500 North American locations. Studio insiders are cautiously anticipating the lower part of that range, though some estimates show it could make over $25 million. Based on the 1973 children’s book by John Bellairs, the fantasy film follows 10-year-old Lewis (Owen Vaccaro), who goes to live with his uncle (Jack Black) in an old house that has a mysterious ticking heart. Cate Blanchett plays a witch who lives next door.

With his adaptation of John Bellairs' The House with a Clock in Its Walls, veteran horror filmmaker Eli Roth ventures into family-friendly fantasy territory, delivering up his most confidently helmed and all-around entertaining project to date (albeit comparing his latest to his previous films does seem a bit odd). Anchored by a trio of outstanding performances from Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, and Owen Vaccaro, The House with a Clock in Its Walls conjures up a bevy of kid-appropriate frights and has the good sense to cast Kyle MacLachlan as its villain to boot, making for a delightful kickoff to the Halloween season for all the pint-sized fans out there.

Eli Roth probably seems like a strange choice to direct a kids’ movie. He’s not the first horror filmmaker to make the transition, but films like “Cabin Fever,” “Hostel” and “The Green Inferno” are so astoundingly grotesque that adding a PG-rated adaptation of John Bellairs’ novel “The House With a Clock in Its Walls” to his résumé looks, at a glance, like some kind of prank.
But Roth’s films have always had a streak of immaturity about them, as though Roth was so eager to make friends that he’d do anything to get your attention, even poke a dead body with a stick. It makes sense that he could tell a good, family-friendly campfire story if he reined in his harshest storytelling impulses. But it’s impressive that, with “The House With a Clock in Its Walls,” he’s connected with his own inner weirdo, found the still-beating heart inside him,...

John Bellairs’ 1973 novel “The House with a Clock in Its Walls” was the first of the author’s six Ya books to be illustrated by the late Edward Gorey, whose pen-and-ink drawings were sinister and delightful in equal measure; they invited children to embrace the darkness of growing up without surrendering the sense of wonder that kept them young. Universal’s soulless 2018 film adaptation of the same name, on the other hand, is directed by “Hostel” auteur Eli Roth, whose cartoonish approach makes this bittersweet saga of witchcraft and wizardry feel like nothing more than a well-furnished theme park attraction. Still, it’s sure to be a veritable nightmare factory for kids of a certain age, and there can only be so much shade to throw at a movie in which Cate Blanchett head-butts a demonically possessed pumpkin in order to help save the world from Kyle MacLachlan’s rotting corpse.

“Movie magic.” That expression used to mean something quite different back when filmmakers relied on practical effects to make the impossible seem possible, and not every Ya protagonist had dormant supernatural powers just waiting to be discovered. Yet another in a pipeline of vaguely Harry Potter-esque wish-fulfillment fantasies, Universal’s clunky, but not entirely un-charming “The House with a Clock in Its Walls” makes enchantment so easy — and so ubiquitous — as to feel almost ordinary, being the all-too-familiar story of an orphan who picks up some nifty tricks when he goes to live in a house that ticks.
Looking back, Amblin Entertainment — that Steven Spielberg-hatched shingle responsible for such films as “Gremlins” and “The Goonies” — may as well have defined the concept of movie magic for a generation, only to see it watered down by all the computer-generated juvenile thrill rides that followed. The Amblin-produced “House” may as well...

Universal has unveiled a brand new trailer and poster for ‘The House With A Clock In It’s Walls‘ and it looks absolutely delightful. Although we saw a teaser trailer for the film a few months back, this trailer does a wonderful job of selling the magical family adventure. The film Stars Owen Vaccaro as Lewis, a boy who goes to live with his uncle (Jack Black) in an old creaky house. After discovering that Black’s character is a Warlock and that the house is indeed magical, Lewis accidentally awakens the dead, thrusting the two into a magical adventure.
Directed by Eli Roth, the film seems to have a great mix of comedy, mysticism and heart. Considering that Roth is known for his more violent, R-rated material, ‘The House With A Clock In It’s Walls‘ is a very welcome change for Roth. Although the film could easily be too whimsical,...

“We don’t know what it does except something horrible,” warns Jack Black’s Jonathan Barnavelt as the group works to destroy the hidden clock in the newly released trailer from the Eli Roth-directed film, The House with a Clock in Its Walls. “Three gongs. Last time it was for four. What happens when it gets down to one?” Jonathan ponders. “Nothing good that’s for certain,” says Mrs. Zimmerman, a witch and Jonathan’s neighbor, played by Cate Blanchett.
