- Replaced Thurl Ravenscroft as Bass in The Sportsmen Quartet in 1942 when Ravenscroft enlisted into the Air Transport Command. Bell's refusal to give up his spot in The Sportsmen when Ravenscroft returned in 1947, set the wheels in motion for The Mellomen to be formed.
