21 Days: The Heineken Kidnapping
Stars: Rutger Hauer, Korneel Evers, Teun Kuilboer, Sallie Harmsen, Marcel Hensema | Written by Maarten Treurniet, Kees van Beijnum | Directed by Maarten Treurniet
Films that are based on true stories can be quite controversial. With 21 Days: The Heineken Kidnapping there is a message at the start of the film to make it clear that it’s a fictional account of events, as if to emphasise that it is not fully the truth, it’s like a legal catch all statement to say they can make it all up. This warning though is probably due to the fact that one of the kidnappers who is still alive is not very happy with the emphasis not only on his character, but the fact that he appears to be somewhat of a sociopath. Then again, although the film is based on the basic facts of the case a lot of it is actually made up,...

Beer turns out to be not so refreshing for Rutger Hauer (Hobo With a Shotgun) in the foreign film The Heineken Kidnapping.
Based on a true story, the thriller movie stars Hauer as Alfred Heineken, who in 1983 was one of the world’s most successful brewers and possibly the most powerful man in the Netherlands. Unfortunately, that also made him a target for kidnappers.
For Rem (Reinout Scholten van Aschat), kidnapping Heineken is more than a profitable affair. He holds a personal grudge against Hauer, who laid off his father after he, ironically, became an alcoholic. When Rem finds out about a gang of hoodlums’ plans to abduct Heineken, he gets himself on the job. Given the assignment of keeping an eye on the beer mogul and his chauffeur, Rem does his best to keep the captors uncomfortable,...

Recently the Blade Runner star got down and dirty with the darkly funny and bloody romp Hobo with a Shotgun, but now Rutger Hauer is back in a more conventional thriller from the Netherlands. The Heineken Kidnapping tells the story of Alfred Heineken, the man who would build the beer empire of the same name. However, rather that following his rise to success and riches, the film chronicles three weeks in November of 1983, when Heineken, along with his driver, was kidnapped and held captive. Sadly the trailer below isn't in English (and lacks subtitles), but the visuals alone make this look damn good. Here's the full trailer for The Heineken Kidnapping courtesy of Twitch: The Heineken Kidnapping is directed by Maarten Treurniet who also co-wrote the script with Kees van Beijnum. This is the duo's second collaboration after working on another Dutch film called Father's Affair. Rutger Hauer (Blade Runner,...
