During the filmmaking process, Otto’s birth mother dies and he finds himself confronting life in the real world, including his future. Why Iman Continues to Push for Progress in the Modeling Industry: ‘Do Not Take the Foot Off the Gas’
When legendary supermodel Iman was first discovered by photographer Peter Beard in Nairobi, Kenya in 1975, a New York Post article circulated claiming that the young discovery was a goat herder who didn’t speak a lick of English. After she arrived in the U.S. three months after the article’s publication, Iman wowed the press when she revealed that she did, in fact, speak English, as well an additional four languages and was a diplomat’s daughter.
“I was going to speak for myself when I got here,” Iman told TheWrap, underlining that she set the record straight to undo the mythology built around the young model before she even moved to the states.
This clever move enabled Iman to control her narrative, as she continues to do nearly 50 years later as an executive producer for Vogue’s “Supreme Models,” a six-part docuseries focused on the evolution of Black...

“The Freedom Orchestra” (working title), a documentary film presented by Clive Myrie, will tell the story of Ukraine’s newly formed Freedom Orchestra. In the midst of the ongoing war with Russia, 75 of Ukraine’s noted musicians have come together to bring a message of defiance and hope. Some of their family members are on the frontlines, and many have fled Ukraine since the war began.
Myrie follows the stories of the musicians from rehearsing, often alone, in Ukraine, to coming together for their first rehearsal as an orchestra in Warsaw for their inaugural concert — ahead of a tour of Europe and the U.S., including a performance at the BBC Proms on July 31.
Myrie said: “There has always been a cultural frontline in this war and I wanted to reflect that struggle. This documentary, I hope, shines a light on Ukraine’s artistic achievements as well as creative spirit,...

The network has ordered two shows from Otto Baxter, short film The Puppet Asylum and companion doc Otto Baxter: Not a F*cking Horror Story. Both will be given a theatrical window before airing on Sky.

The show is being exec produced by Bridget Jones star Sally Phillips, whose son has Down Syndrome and who has presented documentaries on the subject in the past, and comes from All3Media-backed Story Films in association with Archface Films.

Idris Elba is to step back into the boxing ring for a BBC Two series, in which he will provide seven disadvantaged young people with lessons in discipline, focus and determination by putting them through an experimental boxing school.
Idris Elba’s Fight School is a four-part series produced by Workerbee, the Banijay-owned producer behind Quibi series Elba vs. Block, and the Luther actor’s production company Green Door Pictures.
Living and training together over six intense months in London, the school recruits will battle it out against other amateurs and work towards a big showcase finale. They will be trained in the ring by former boxing champions.
If they can stick it out, the no-holds-barred, rough-and-ready experience will motivate them to make positive changes, but only if they are open to them. Along the way, they will be mentored by Elba, who has been through similar training himself for Discovery’s Idris Elba: Fighter.

Exclusive: Actor Theo James and producer Andrew D. Corkin are joining forces to produce theatrical and small-screen projects in the UK and U.S. with their new label Untapped.
“While our primary focus is genre and thriller, we are drawn to stories of conflicted humanity that force viewers to question how they would react when faced with real or existential threats,” said James. “These stories are often grounded in truth – literal or allegorical – encouraging us to confront and challenge the assumptions we make about ourselves and the world around us.”
Said Corkin: “We’re excited to solidify our partnership to tell complex, diverse stories across various mediums. Theo and I share a vision for how we want to build stories and worlds that both fit within the current marketplace and look beyond it.”
Already, James and Corkin have several film and TV projects in various stages of development, prep and post.

Adolfas Mekas made his mark in American independent filmmaking with this avant-garde comedy that shook up film festivals circa 1963. Although it is said to have inspired Andy Warhol, it’s its own animal entirely, eighty minutes of cinematic frivolity that’s too sincere to be a parody of the filmic conventions it so happily celebrates.

Trying to describe Adolfas Mekas’ Hallelujah the Hills is a real chore. It is avant-garde in a way that no longer seems all that ‘avant,’ yet its impact in 1963 was very strongly felt in independent filmmaking everywhere.

Stan Dragoti, director of “Love at First Bite” and “Mr. Mom,” died July 13 in Los Angeles. His wife Yolanda reported that he died after complications from pneumonia. He was 85.
In addition to rewatching his films such as “Mr. Mom” and “Love at First Bite,” he loved watching his movie “Necessary Roughness,” Yolanda Dragoti said, “Because he loved football.”
“He got me hooked on Turner Classic Movies, we would watch black and white movies all night long,” she recalled. “He was such a history buff, a film buff. I learned so much from him.”
Born in Manhattan, Dragoti was the son of Albanian immigrants.
He attended Cooper Union College and later the Visual Arts College before working at the New York City advertising agencies Young & Rubicam and Mary Wells Lawrence. He partnered with Charlie Moss to create the “I Love New York” tourism campaign.

“If you bury me in a grave, don’t ever come visit — because you won’t find me there. You’ll find me in the books that I’ve read, the music I’ve listened to, and the art I’ve created,” Salim Akil tells his family. The creator of “Black Lightning” who was previously known for “The Game” and “Being Mary Jane,” surrounds himself with works that inspire him to create both at the Akil Prods.’ office that he shares with his wife, executive producer Mara Brock Akil, as well as his home office. Up next for the creative duo is “Love Is___” for Own, which is based on their own relationship.

There are a few ways to think about Edith Bouvier Beale, the fallen ’30 debutante–turned–head-scarf-wearing aristocratic freak who became a cult figure in “Grey Gardens,” the 1975 Maysles brothers documentary that’s now regarded as a vérité classic. When you first see “Little Edie,” she comes off as someone who, if she didn’t exist, John Waters would have had to invent. Swanning around in her too-bright lipstick and Ocd kerchiefs (think Muslim head scarves designed by Coco Chanel), she’s a found-object character, a High Wasp fruitcake dropping breathy pensées that make her sound weirdly worldly and utterly around the bend. That’s why she’s a camp icon.
But how did she get that way? The astounding musical version of “Grey Gardens,” which premiered Off Broadway in 2006, dove deep into Edie’s past and came up with an interpretation of how, exactly, she wound up living with her ancient domineering mother,...

One of the most beloved documentaries of all time is getting a companion piece, and it’s coming from even closer to the source. The Beales of “Grey Gardens,” otherwise known as Big Edie and Little Edie, were forever memorialized in Albert and David Maysles’ captivating 1975 documentary. What many “Grey Gardens” fans don’t know, however, is that the Maysles discovered their eccentric subjects through a project initiated by artist Peter Beard and Lee Radziwill, sister of Jackie Kennedy and cousin of the Beales. That film never saw the light of day, and the Maysles returned on their own to continue filming, eventually resulting in “Grey Gardens.”
The original footage, shot prior to anything seen in “Grey Gardens,” will finally be seen in “That Summer,” a new documentary which recently released its first trailer. The lost footage has been turned into a feature by Swedish filmmaker Göran Hugo Olsson, who...

The “Grey Gardens” mystique becomes even more intriguing with “That Summer,” a prequel of sorts to the famed Maysles film that fills in background information while furthering the hagiographic cult surrounding Big and Little Edie. Almost exclusively composed of 16mm footage shot in 1972 and lost until now, Göran Hugo Olsson’s fascinating documentary recounts the summer when Lee Radziwill and photographer Peter Beard decided to record Radziwill’s reclusive aunt and first cousin, hiring the Maysles and shooting in and around Grey Gardens while workers fixed the place up — yes, it’s hard to believe, but the house was in even worse shape before the 1975 documentary. Given the two Edies’ large fan base and the iconic status of the earlier film, “That Summer” is certain to make a big splash on art-house screens and streaming sites.

The Telluride Film Festival has announced its 2017 lineup. As usual, the exclusive Colorado gathering features a range of buzzy fall season movies, including many films also premiering in Venice and Toronto as well as others resurfacing from earlier in the year, just in time for awards season. Filmmakers in this year’s program range from Alexander Payne to Angelina Jolie. The festival will also honor cinematographer Ed Lachman, actor Christian Bale, and screen a new cut of Francis Ford Coppola’s 1984 Harlem musical “The Cotton Club.”
One of the bigger films to make the cut in this year’s lineup should take no one by surprise: “Downsizing” (12/22, Paramount), Payne’s long-gestating near-future workplace satire starring Matt Damon, will screen at the festival where Payne has been a regular for years (both as a filmmaker and audience member). The movie opened the Venice Film Festival earlier this week, and was followed...
