It seems that an outrageous comedian will be moving away from his documentary-style films. According to Variety, Sacha Baron Cohen has started his own production company, dubbed Four By Two Films, and he already has his first two films lined up.
The first film is entitled Accidentes, written by Peter Baynham, who was one of the writers on both Borat and Bruno. Baron Cohen will star as a personal injury lawyer who becomes a blue-collar hero when he helps an immigrant win a case against his employer after an on-the-job accident. The film was originally set up at Fox Atomic, but that label folded and a new deal was set up at Universal.
Not much is known about the second, untitled film, but the pitch alone set off a massive bidding war, which Columbia Pictures won. Baron Cohen will write the film along with all of his Borat and Bruno writers, »

We wouldn't call Borat and Bruno full-fledged documentaries, since the title characters were fictional extensions of Sacha Baron Cohen's twisted psyche. Nevertheless, the movies' antics were steeped in reality, creating a kind of pseudo-vérité.
But now, it appears that Cohen has decided to abandon the candid-camera shtick altogether. Variety writes that the 38-year-old British comedian has founded his own production company, Four By Two Films, and will go to work producing a new fictional project scripted by Peter Baynham.
Accidentes will tell the story of an "ambulance-chasing personal injury attorney of Latin descent" (played by Cohen) who helps a poor immigrant with a case against his wealthy employer. Ambulance-chasing, huh? We'll be interested to see what that means.
Cohen struck a deal with Universal for Accidentes and also got Columbia to commit to another starring vehicle. Cohen will script that project, as yet untitled, with Baynham, Anthony Hines, and Dan Mazer, »

Sacha Baron Cohen is a self-made man, the kind of guy that we all strive to be. He has a hot wife. He has an amazing job. And he uses his job to rebel against whatever establishment is dumb enough to let him film them. He.s a great writer, an underrated actor, and now he.s the owner of a production company. According to Variety, Cohen formed a production company named Four By Two Films. He.ll use the company as an outlet for scripted vehicles for himself, two of which are already planned. Columbia purchased the first, which will be scripted by Cohen and his writing team from Borat and Bruno. The second will be released via Universal and is titled Accidentes. Written by Pete Baynham, the movie will have Cohen playing an ambulance-chasing lawyer who becomes an unlikely hero of the working poor after he wins a »

Armando Iannucci has revealed that an Alan Partridge movie is still in the planning stages. The In The Loop director, who co-writes the character with Steve Coogan, Peter Baynham and Patrick Marber, told Digital Spy that despite Coogan's recent comments, a story for the film hasn't been decided upon. "We're still talking about a story," he said, adding: "It has to feel up there with the TV show in terms of quality. We've got various ideas and they're making us laugh so that's the good thing." Cor blimey!
After their troubled relationship with Dreamworks ended in tears (each company “Flushed Away” the other basically) it got a bit quiet on the Aardman cinema front. A deal with Sony was signed which thankfully assured Something would be forthcoming, so all we had to do was wait, and wait…
Well, the waiting has not exactly ended, but Aardman Studios has released details for two upcoming feature films which are scheduled for 2011 and 2012. Good thing I’m getting better at being more patient lately…
First up will be “Arthur Christmas” by Sarah Smith and Barry Cook. Written by Peter Baynham of “Borat” (in?)fame, the script tells how Santa’s huge army, consisting of high-tech combat elves, makes sure there is no nightmare During Christmas.
Oh, man. Combat elves? I cannot wait to see this…
The second feature is “The Pirates! - In An Adventure With Scientists” by Peter Lord. »

Back in 2005, Nick Park and the folks at Aardman Animations won an Oscar for their work on Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. A year later, their follow-up film Flushed Away disappointed at the box office and prompted Dreamworks to sever their partnership. Since then we haven't heard much from the British studio, save for one new made-for-tv Wallace & Gromit adventure, but they did land a deal with Sony Pictures and now they're finally ready to tell us about some of projects they've got cooking. One of the films is a holiday-themed feature called Arthur Christmas, which "tackles the question of how Santa delivers all his presents in one night". Sarah Smith and Barry Cook (Mulan) will direct the movie, which will be computer animated, based on a script by Peter Baynham (Borat, Bruno). The other project, which I'm a bit more interested in, is a stop motion animated project called Pirates! »

Sony Pictures and stop-frame animation house Aardman Animations are moving forward with two animated features, "Pirates!" and "Arthur Christmas." "Pirates!" is based on "The Pirates! (in an Adventure with Scientists)," the best-selling series of books by Gideon Defoe and is intended to be a swashbuckling adventure with a rich vein of surreal and broad comedy. The story follows a group of pirates who journey to London, meet Charles Darwin and a talking chimp named Mister Bobo, and an enemy looking to wipe them out. Aardman co-founder Peter Lord is directing and will use stop-motion animation, the company's signature style seen in films such as "Wallace and Gromit in the Curse of Were-Rabbit" and "Chicken Run." "Christmas" will tackle the question of how Santa delivers all his presents in one night. Sarah Smith and Barry Cook are directing from a script by Peter Baynham (Borat). The film will be produced entirely using CGI. »

Twentieth Century Fox is set to close down Fox Atomic, the production label started by Peter Rice in 2007 to generate comedy and genre films, report the trades. The division had been seen as vulnerable since its marketing arm was absorbed back into Fox and Fox Searchlight in January 2008. Fox Atomic was formed in January 2007 around former chief operating officer John Hegeman, now at New Regency, and Debbie Liebling, who as a Fox executive showed a flair for comedy on such Fox hits as Borat and Dodgeball. Before that, she served as a producer on the South Park series and the 1999 feature film. The label has had its name on such genre efforts as 28 Weeks Later, The Hills Have Eyes II and Turistas and on comedies such as The Rocker, The Comebacks, Miss March and 12 Rounds. It’s upcoming slate includes the comedy I Love You, Beth Cooper, directed by Chris Columbus and starring Hayden Panettiere, »

Variety is reporting that 20th Century Fox is planning to put an end to Fox Atomic, which was responsible for the studio's comedies and genre films like "28 Weeks Later," "The Hills Have Eyes II," "Turistas," "The Rocker," "The Comebacks," "Miss March" and "12 Rounds." Even though most of the film's have failed to become big hits, Fox Atomic was hoping to turn things around with two potentially comercial movies that include Hayden Panettiere's "I Love You, Beth Cooper" and Megan Fox's "Jennifer's Body." Both projects will now be released by 20th Century Fox. And what about Fox Atomic's future films? Apparently, both "28 Months Later" and "Accidentes" will also move to 20th Century Fox. "28 Months Later" is a continuation of the zombie franchise launched by director Danny Boyle. "Accidentes" is a potential star vehicle for Sacha Baron Cohen, in which he will play an ambulance chasing lawyer who becomes a working class folk hero. »

This week:
Madea is the champ at the box office; Jim Carrey and Jake Gyllenhaal sing; Zorro meets Woody; Original Films remakes Total Recall and Arthur will have something to say soon.
Box Office
Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes To Jail stayed locked up in the top spot with an estimated weekend take of $16 million.
Jonas Brothers: 3-D Concert Experience underperformed with an estimated weekend take of about $12.5 million. Not bad for a film showing on only 1, 271 screens, but the film was expected to gross double that!
Slumdog Millionaire rides the train of Oscar success and manages another $12 million for a $115 million total. Expect Danny Boyle to do whatever he pleases for his next film.
Liam Neeson’s Taken continues to impress with another $9 million in the bank. So far Taken has…er… taken over $100 million.

Peter Baynham has been set by Warner Bros to write "Arthur," a remake of the 1981 comedy that is being crafted as a vehicle for Russell Brand (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) to play the lovable lush. Baynham was one of Sacha Baron Cohen's screenwriting cohorts on "Borat," and he collaborated with Baron Cohen once again on the upcoming "Bruno." Brezner produced the original, which was written and directed by Steve Gordon and starred Dudley Moore as a boozy playboy whose plan to marry into a moneyed family goes awry when he falls in love with a working class gal. »

Variety is reporting Peter Baynham is set to write a remake of the 1981 Dudley Moore comedy Arthur with expectations UK funnyman Russell Brand will take over the title role. If you aren't familiar with Baynham's name don't worry, I wasn't either, but he was one of the screenwriters on Sacha Baron Cohen's Borat and contributed to the upcoming summer release Bruno which stars Cohen as a flamboyant Austrian fashionista that causes just as much trouble as Borat did, just in a slightly different way. As for Arthur, the original was nominated for four Oscars and went on to win two including a supporting win for John Gielgud. In the film Moore played a boozy playboy whose plan to marry into a moneyed family goes awry when he falls in love with a working class gal. Of course, we can't mention Arthur without mentioning Christopher Cross and his Oscar winning »
